I'd pick Monaco. I've put hundreds of hours in monaco, and about 20-40 (screw the exact number) hours into 1001 spikes.
Monaco's single-player is also pretty fun in addition to it's multiplayer as well. And the game's been out for a while, so they released 2 free level packs. The online multiplayer is really good as well; it's hilarious having 4 people running around massively screwing up yet still accomplishing.
Also, Monaco has a nice difficulty curve, so the levels are varied.
Edit: Also, if 1001 spikes interests you, you should look into Bloody Trapland - it's $5 cheaper but kind of similar (punishing 4-player platforming) http://store.steampowered.com/app/257750/
