Blocks That Matter

Blocks That Matter

Frustrating
It is very sad, that i have to dissuade from buying Blocks That Matter because of one simple thing: the lack of save/checkpoints or one undo option
and that one hit kill lava is also pretty annoying
all in all the game does not allow any mistakes and that is why i cant recommend buying it
im no hardcore jump&run/puzzle gamer so i just want one fun game to play when im bored
but this game isnt funny at all
it is just annoying and pretends to be difficult because of that "no forgiving EVER"
lately i played LIMBO and Word of Goo
those games were hard at some points too, but LIMBO had checkpoints every few steps and Word of Goo allowed to undo mistakes
i absolutely loved those two games and i also would love Blocks that Matter if it just werent so damn annoying respectively had those features i already mentioned

If you're leaping headlong into lava drops, chances are you're going about it from a needlessly dangerous standpoint in the first place. Stand still for a couple seconds and get a rhythm before going through; the window between drops is almost always bigger than it looks once you take a second to watch it. If you don't trust yourself to do that, walk up next to it, wait for one to land, then run past. If it still makes you nervous for whatever reason, blocks are cheap and take like half a second to pick back up -- block it with stone/metal and reclaim it from the other side. Fire slimes can be easily corralled with blocks or killed with falling sand.

This game rewards playing it safe and gives you oodles of tools to do it. There's rarely any need in this game to go all that fast, even when there's a giant slime chasing you. Slow down, smell the roses, use the block interface just to pause and take stock of your surroundings if you have to, and don't charge into dangerous things.

I am going to disagree with you Waypoint. I raged quit at level 34 where you had to perfectly race against the burning wood by 5 lava drips to get past an obsidean wall. Then perfectly time a dynamite jump and a few additional lava drips at the end. One mistake and you are back at the beginning. Many of the earlier levels, I mistakenly took a brick out of order or placed the wrong type brick and had to start all over. Major PITA

The game has so much potential but the lack of save points, the tetrabot being more of a parallelagram instead of a cube so it gets caught on edges, and no ability to look at the entire area and having to go blindly into many places just makes this game very frustrating. Honestly, I am sticking with Toki Tori.

@zaphod5:
Actually, you can look around the entire level (except in select few community levels that disable this function). You can press and hold a certain button to move the camera around during play (the button you need to press will be shown in the upper-left corner during play, and you can map it to a different button in the options menu if you want).

@zaphod5
yeah that is exactly what i meant
you just have to do a perfect run in order to finish the level and that is damn annoying
i like playing around, making mistakes but I don`t want to redo the whole level!

I kinda of agree, I keep trying to get into this game but it's so frustrating making one mistake and having to start the entire thing over. I kept mashing buttons to see if there was a rewind function because it seems like the exact type of game that needs one.

If they're not gonna have checkpoints or a rewind function they should have made the levels much much shorter.

Level 34 is really really bad. Block That Matters is a platform puzzle game and the developer seems to forgotten about it on level 34.

By it nature platform chase/timed scene are hard and very frustrating. Now add puzzle elements to it and you can see how bad level 34 is.

They made it worst by not having a check point system and the chase scene started in the beginning. That means if you pass the chase/timed scene and failed at the many puzzle element after that. You have to start the entire chase/timed scene again.

So then we shouldn't mention the bonus level 012 Extreme Temperature, right?
I enjoyed the game, but felt that sometimes the game can't decide if it wants to be a puzzle game, a platformer or a very difficult platformer like Super Meat Boy (see again bonus lvl 012).
Jacowboy 30/set./2013 às 2:51
If that's the level I think it is, yeah, that's a f***** stupid level... And a level that's keeping me from 100%ing the game... ¬¬

I don't know who ever thought of that, but seriously, that's ultra annoying. And the big mama levels too, although to a lesser extent.
Coppercentage 30/set./2013 às 12:34
yeah there is a difference between a hard game and an unforgiving game( in this case flawed) sometimes you just miss one jump or some minor error a very simple on might I add then poof back to the start. Thats not difficulty its bad design and really detracts from games when minor errors result in you having to replay the last huge chunk of the level.

Since Tetrobot and Co. got a rewind function, perhaps the devs would be willing to patch one into this game?

p.s. The demo crashes to desktop after the initial loading screen on Win XP SP3, AMD HD 6850.
Berenthas 13/jan./2014 às 8:09
you know what else is frustrating? having this game for 5 months and still being unable to launch it without crashing. so yeah, I also dissuade everyone reading this to buy this game.

I just completed the game 100% with all achievements (completing the last one as I type this comment).

I was a bit anxious seeing all those comments about the lack of rewind or checkpoint. But eventually I believe the game is fine as is. One has to be warned about the hardcore platforming sections it involves here and there.

Bonus level 012 Extreme Temperature is insane. I recommend you watch a video or test it as soon as you can, before thinking about completing the game. Still an excellent puzzle platformer in my opinion.
