Game fails to load
When I try start the game it gives an error saying it did not shut down correctly. It then hangs, showing no signs of doing anything other than maxing out one of my CPU cores. I've already deleted the game (including the folder in steamapps) and reinstalled, updated my graphics card drivers, reinstalled Java, and rebooted my computer. I HAVE played it on this computer before, several months ago, and it seemed to work fine at that time.

An odd question, but did you upgrade to win 8 in the process? My dad sank nearly a hundred hours into Ticket to Ride, and when he "upgraded" to windows 8, it suddenly refused to load, regardless of what he did, despite nothing physical in the computer changing.

Nope. I've had Windows 7 on this machine from day one.

odd. I wonder if the game has some self destruct lines in it's code. Sorry I can't help.

Thanks for trying to help though. I submitted a ticket to support with all the above information. They responded by telling me to upgrade my graphics card drivers even though I said I did that already. Hopefully they actually read the reply.

I upgraded to windows 8 and Ticket to Ride stopped working... what I did was force 8 into updating all it needed to (through settings>update) and rebooted. it worked after that.
I also emailed DoW with the reply of graphics drivers, but my error message was to do with graphics card.

Found this on the Days of Wonder site:

Ticket to Ride does not start on Steam

The Steam version does not start at all, or shows repeatedly an error message during start-up and fails.

This is the sign that one of the installed files is corrupted. The solution is easy, you need to perform a full re-install:

In Steam, go to your Library
Right-click on Ticket to Ride
Choose Delete Local Content...
Confirm
Important: in Windows Explorer, delete the directory C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\ticket to ride
And then, back in your Steam Library, click Play Game on Ticket to Ride to re-install it.

This procedure will completely un-install and re-install the game, which should tackle the problem.

Note that you will not lose your Ranking or Game History, because this information is safely stored with your Days of Wonder Online account on the Days of Wonder servers.

I already followed those instructions, complete with the extra step of exiting Steam and deleting a cache folder in the %USER% directory. It still refuses to work for me. Support failed to respond after I told them that.

I installed steam, been playing ticket to ride with java on firefox, and it wants me to pay for Ticket to Ride??

Unless you are able and have filled the requirements to follow the prompts on this site:
http://www.daysofwonder.com/en/msg/?th=25707&start=0
you will have to pay. The Steam version is separate to the web version, and thus, must be procured seperately. However, if you fulfil the requirements of that post, you will be able to upgrade for free.

Hope that helps.

Reinstalling and deleting the directory works for me on Win7.

I tried those instructions before contacting support. They didn't work. I also haven't heard back from Days of Wonder support in nearly two weeks regarding next steps to take.
