You can also rush a base to improve it's relations. Select your fastest ship, and then as soon as you jump in, put all your other ships on passive/move them away from the station via tactics screen. Then dock with the station and use goons to improve your relations as normal. I believe this might not work if your relation is at the very lowest point, HATE. You must be ENEMY or better to do this.
Your last option is to obliterate the opposing faction's base. This will immediately improve your relations with the other side as well as resetting the destroyed faction's power in that system to 0. It can also be repeated to improve faction relations further.
This is ordered by difficulty, by the way.
1. option: So jumping around in other systems doesn't count? It's not really a problem, but it does seem a little strange
2. option: Huh, didn't even know they would let you dock. Thanks, that's quite useful to know. Kinda funny when you think about it though: They're like "Kill the bastard! He's worse than Hitler!" and then after docking "Oh hey, pal! Long time no see. Here, have a cookie" ^_^
3. option: Well, right know I suppose it's doubtful at best that my crappy little ships can take on a station :) Good to know for later in the game though, but couldn't I just destroy the base that sells the items I want or do they blow up with the station? And if they do, are they gone for good or do they just rebuild the station and sell them there again?
They will be floating around in the debris of the former station. I do this quite often for low level systems once you get tough. Costs less Rez
