Logging Into Your Own 'Dedicated Server'
So I set up everything through the Steam 'Dedicated Server' tool, yet I have no way of testing to see if it worked after launch, since apparently your own servers aren't supposed to show up in the lobby browser thing. After painstakingly going through lines and lines of discussions - which, not being big on networking, I honestly understood less than half of - I did manage to dig up the "?AdminName={admin}?AdminPassword={password}" which I added, however there's still no place to login from.

Maybe I missed a step or something, I don't know. I just don't see the purpose of creating a server if you yourself can't play on it when you feel like it. If anyone could provide instructions, I would appreciate it; and please, no links to previous outdated discussions, because for one, I've probably already read them (I read many), and for another, I only really want this issue explained, since I checked and double-checked everything as I did it, so I'm fairly confident it should work, up to this.

if you want that to work you will have to make an entry for it it in the server ini file. and oh yes, you will see your server in the browser if it is working. and you can log in as admin to the server through the in-game command console just like any other unreal game. but don't expect your server to require a password to play because apparently that command is not working for the dedicated server.

Which file is the 'server .ini'? Is that the shortcut to DHGameServer, where I edited the target field? 'Cuz that's where I entered it, and it's still not appearing. Otherwise, is it one of those config files? A general directory path and/or the exact name of the file would be nice.

you will see many config files but the ones you want reside here:

\UDKGame\Config\yourservername\PCServer-UDKGame.ini

look for or create the section
[Engine.AccessControl]
i think the section should exist already so search it before creating it

under that heading add these lines and you will be able to log in to your own server through the command console in the game. you can then use the typical unreal console admin commands.
the GamePassword appears to not work.

AdminPassword=
GamePassword=
bBanByID=True
LoginDelaySeconds=0.000000
IPPolicies=ACCEPT;*

you will find the difficulty setting there too but it doesn't appear to work. also i don't know the other ini settings for money, revives, etc.

I still have no idea if that did anything as I cannot connect. I don't know if it's a normal thing to just offhand know a plethra of 'typical unreal console admin commands', but I assuredly don't. Answers from Google, in their traditionally unhelpful fashion, did not work.

To log into your own server, just open the console and type "open ip:port". If your server is on the same machine you are trying to connect with you can use "open 127.0.0.1:7777" or whatever port you're using. If that doesn't work, you'll have to use your local area network ip "open 192.168.1.66:7777" for example.

if you can't see your own server in the browser then you are doing something else wrong.

^ I don't think so.
I made a dedicated server on a my second PC which has all ports forwarded. It has tons of players on it daily, yet I can never see it in lobby from my main computer (both are in the same LAN network).
I always have to use "open 192.168.x.x" to join it myself.

Alright, so then after the 'open [local ip address]' command, what is supposed to happen? You just exit the console and it immediately starts the match? Because that didn't work for me.

sounds like you're trying to say that you think that you're not supposed to be able to see your dedicated server from the other pc's on your lan. i think that you should be able to do that. i have multiple pc's on my lan, no such issue. i took no special steps to make it that way either. it must be something in your network preventing it from being visible to the other computers on the lan. though i can't tell you exactly what's wrong, i will say it isn't entirely right.

@Voidsword

Yes, you enter open [ip address] and it should immediately attempt to connect to your server.
However, I noticed that sometimes I have to use multiple connection attempts on my own server before it actually lets me connect. Most of the time I get "connection closed by host" and on the 3rd or 4th attempt I get connected fine. Dunno why.

@MIREY SLYMUS

Perhaps you are right.
But then again, it's not so important for me to see it in the server browser as long as others can.
