Regestring CD key from sims 3 but not reconising the steam key.

Ive looked at the other fixes for this game to run properly on windows 8.1 i did type out the CD key from steam to the sims 3 register a game and no success. I need some help on how to get this game to run the way it should any guidence would be helpful thank you.
