Watch X-Men Days of Future Past. Just as the first “X-Men” opened with a flashback to the Holocaust, so the new film commences with a grim evocation of death and warfare. Professor Charles Xavier (Patrick Stewart) and his longtime friend/nemesis, Erik Lensher/Magneto (Ian McKellen), to seek refuge with their few remaining allies in a remote Chinese safe house. Their last hope is Kitty Pryde (Ellen Page): Professor X and Magneto propose that she send Logan/Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) back to the year 1973 in order to undo certain key events and thereby erase the Sentinel program from history. (With his superhuman powers of bodily regeneration, Logan is the only one who could withstand such a journey — a handy justification for keeping the series’ defining character front and center.)

Charged with stopping Mystique from assassinating diminutive weapons-maker Bolivar Trask (Peter Dinklage) — a deed which will result in global extinction — Wolverine (Hugh Jackman) is hampered by obstacles: his claws are no longer metal, Magneto’s being his usual bastard self, and his serene mentor Charles is now a thirtysomething depressive who won’t get out of his dressing gown. But Simon Kinberg’s script keeps things breezy; there are quips, in-jokes, Terminator references and crackle[www.crackle.com], one of the high-points, a callback to the F-bomb dropped in First Class.

Now an Oscar-winning megastar, Lawrence, quite rightly, sees her role amplified as the moral centrepiece to the film, but it's sometimes difficult for her to shine amongst that heavy body make-up and the acrobatic stunt inserts.
