Intro

In this guide you will learn how to use the Grinder and craft the loot you need.

Certain loot can't be grinded with others, and different rules apply to each.
So take each term to mean:
  • Weapons: loot that is equipped in inventory slots 1 - 4, i.e. Guns.
  • Items: loot that is equipped in inventory slots 5 - 8, i.e. Shields

> Normal Grind: Can give you an item / weapon of the same rarity.
> Moonstone Grind: Guarantees an upgrade + chance of adding a Luneshine effect.

For all recipes, the level of the output is the average (rounded down) of the level of the 3 inputs.
What is the Grinder?
The Grinder is a device located in Janey Springs's workshop in Concordia, and is usable after you complete the mission Grinders (Level 11).

It consumes three weapons or items and produces a new random weapon as a result.

Rarity
The following is a list of the most basic recipes by rarity. These rules apply to any and all items/weapons when grinding.

3 White items / weapons of the same type = Green item / weapon of that type

The Grinder has been recently updated, allowing the grinding of 3 purple items and weapons. So far, the information suggest that gridning 3 items / weapons of the same type returns a purple of that type. However, there is a small chance to receive a legendary of that type.

3 Purple items / weapons of the same type = Purple item / weapon of that type OR Orange item / weapon of that type
Weapons
The following is a list of recipes to receive a weapon of a desired type.
Note that all input weapons need to be of the same rarity.
Pistols
The compact nature of pistols differentiates them from other kinds of weapon loot. They are agile weapons with a decent amount of fire-rate and accuracy. Very good for melee players.

SMGs
Submachine Guns, also known as SMGs, are a class of light fully automatic weapons. They tend to have high fire rates, low damage, easily exhausted magazines, and quick reload times.

Shotguns
Shotguns tend to have low accuracy and low magazine sizes compared to most other weapons in the game, sport medium rates of fire, and have a high degree of firepower per blast. At point-blank range, shotguns can cause even more damage than rocket launchers or sniper rifles.

Sniper Rifles are accurate, often scoped, heavy weapons with an extreme damage-per-bullet rate balanced by a low fire rate and small magazine. They tend to have high accuracy when sighted, and low accuracy when not sighted.

Rocket Launchers
Rocket Launchers shoot self-propelled grenades across long distances at subsonic speeds. They are characterized by having extremely small internal magazines, high to very high damage ratings at the site of impact, and additional area-of-effect or "splash" damage.

Legendaries
There are two different ways to get legendaries out of the Grinder. The first method, while being a significant investment, almost guarantees you a Legendary (without Moonstone). With a Moonstone Grind the chance is 100%, with a chance of it having a Luneshine effect.

1 purple weapon + 2 Legendary weapons =

+ 2 Legendary weapons =

+ 2 Legendary weapons =

+ 2 Legendary weapons =

With the recent Grinder update, there is now another method to get legendaries out of the grinder. 3 Purples grinded give a small chance to give you a legendary.

Also, we have information that suggests you can grind 3 Legendary items. The player grinded 3 Orange Oz Kits and recieved a purple Oz Kit back. This suggests that grinding 3 Legendaries also gives you a chance to give you a legendary.
Items
The same rarity rules apply for grinding Shields, Class Mods, Oz Kits and Grenade Mods, however, they cannot be inter-grinded. Items belong to their own exclusive category. For example, Oz Kits cannot be grinded with anything else except for other Oz Kits, and no other recipe except for 3 Oz Kits will produce an Oz Kit.
Shields
Shields are rechargeable shield generators that prevent characters from receiving damage to their health, including projectile weapon damage, elemental and melee, until a shield's charge is depleted.

Class Mods
Class Mods are class specific upgrades that provide benefits to the character (or the entire team) by offering a wide variety of bonuses such as amplifying a character's damage, healing, increasing character health or shield capacity, reducing reload times, increasing skill ranks, etc.

Grenade Mods
Grenade Mods are useful upgrades that modify the properties of a character's protean grenades by increasing their damage, changing their functionality, and/or adding elemental properties.

Oz Kits
An Oz Kit is a breathing apparatus which allows humans to breathe on the airless surface of Elpis. Slam attacks can also be conducted with Oz kits in low gravity environments. A slam is initiated by going into a crouch in mid air. This drops a Vault Hunter to the ground, dealing damage to enemies in a wide radius from the point of impact.

Moonstone Grind
When you grind three items/weapons, you will have the opportunity to invest a certain amount of Moonstone to produce the highest possible quality output.

It is important to note that without a moonstone upgrade, any recipe above (including grinding Legendaries) has a chance to produce a weapon/item of the same rarity of the inputs.

The cost of the upgrade is: (L1 + L2 + L3) x M, which is calculated by:

L1-3 = Level requirement for input items 1-3
M = Multiplier depending on the rarity of the input items/weapons: 0.3 for white, 0.5 for green and 1 for orange.

The level requirement of the produced item/weapon is the average of the level requirements of the input items/weapons, rounded down. New information may reveal a different formula calculating the cost of a moonstone upgrade. Further testing required.

Luneshine Bonus
Weapons and some items grinded with moonstone may give your output weapon one of the following Luneshine bonuses:
  • Boominator: +5% grenade damage
  • Fast Learner: +XP from kills
  • Harden Up: +3% maximum shield capacity
  • Oxygenator: +1 O2 unit after damaging an enemy
  • Piercing Rounds: +30% chance to ignore shields
  • Punisher: +10% critical damage
  • Safe Guard: +3% capacity added to shields on kill
  • Serenity: -20% O2 consumption rate
Problems + Speculation
Here is a list recapping any problems you may encounter with the Grinder
  • You cannot grind unique loot (Blue-rarity items/weapons that have red text)
  • You cannot grind the Excalibasterrd.

Speculation on other things that may affect the Grinder:
  • Loot Manufacturer
  • Quest Rewards
  • Weapon Element

for some red-text items it lets you grind them, for others it doesn't. may be something to do with earlier red-text items or special red-text items in the game

I put 3 purple pistols in the grinder, paid the moonstone, and got a worse purple pistol. I have found no advantage to using the grinder at all.

You can definitely grind blue rarity with red text now. In fact, I have gotten red text items out of the grinder as well. I am pretty sure that when I did it, I had used at least 2 red text weapons. I have gotten a couple of shotguns I believe. Octo, and a Boomacorn. :vault::claptrap::orb:

Is there any advantage to using the grinder in the nexus over the one in Concordia or are they equal?
