Island Blues
I've got a game running with Wendy up to about Day 72 or thereabouts, and things are going pretty well -- except I'm basically on an island, and there are parts of the world I can't get to. I can see them in places, and the fringes show up on the map, but there's no path there. I've been around the world a couple of times, keeping one hand on the water (as it were), and there's no doubt that a good deal of terrain is inaccessible. (I wanted to make darn good and sure before posting about it, and believe me, it's too true.) 'Twould appear to be a bug in the map generation. I don't recall exactly but I think I had land branching turned down a notch and loops at the default.

In one spot it looks a there's most of a narrow land-bridge which would go exactly where needed, but it's bisected by a thin strip of water and therefore impassible. Is it possible to enter the caves and exit via a (currently plugged) hole somewhere in the terra incognita? (I've never tried banging my way up from the caves, don't know if a hole can be opened from underneath.) A fantastic pile of gold awaits if I can get some of my enormous loot collection to a pig king, and more gears would come in handy. I can see the chessboard, but can't get to it, and I lack some of the Things, not to mention Maxwell's Doorway. Has this happened to anyone else?

No, caves won't link two land masses. If you come across a brown hairy lump that turns into a pink spiky mouth when you're nearby, jump into it. It's very unlikely for a landmass to be split like this in Sandbox mode.

You could provide us with a screenshot of your map.

It's not impossible to spawn on an island with no wormholes connected to the main landmass. It's just highly unlikely.

I would also like to see an image of your map. Fogbusting will suffice, but for a clearer picture that will also save you time you may want to consider using console commands:

Open the console (default is "~") and type the following exactly as written:
minimap = TheSim:FindFirstEntityWithTag("minimap")
minimap.MiniMap:ShowArea(0,0,0,10000)
You can then close the console with either ~ or Ctrl+L.

^The above will reveal your world until you Save & Quit (at which point fog returns to pre-reveal values)

Worst case scenario, you'll have to spawn another world. If your world really is broken, it's better to do it now than later.

Are you using any mods?

No mods. Gotta fly momentarily, will make a screenshot a bit later. I'm playing on three monitors (on which the game runs beautifully, BTW), and the "hard" edges only get drawn on the minimap when the shoreline is in the center display, so it will look like there are places I haven't seen (but believe me, I've seen the entire coast several times.)

I started a new map anyway, just for grins. I think I'll try popping into a local wormhole though, see what happens. Thanks, all, for the responses.

Ha! Wormholery was the ticket. There are an even number of wormholes on the "island," so I assumed they were all paired and didn't hold much hope for a connection to the Other Side. (My erroneous assumption demonstrated to me that it pays to be optimistic once in a while -- as long as you don't tell anyone and spoil your image, of course -- so hooray for mindlessly violent entertainment with no moral or ethical value!). After trying about half of the holes I hadn't used already, ho HO! One of them did the trick. (That means there's another wormhole connection from the island to the mainland somewhere, but I'm not in a terrible hurry to find it, as the one I found does everything I needed done, and the mainland terminus is nicely convenient to all the major attractions.) So, we're happily back to not starving as best we can; I slammed Wendy through to day 118 last night after finding the escape route. Thanks to all for the help!
