Manual save is a delightful surprise
With so many games relying on checkpoints nowadays, it's a pleasant surprise to find a game that allows manual savign the old fashioned way, especially since the Store game details don't mention it.
And the 'load save game' function works very well too, so I can't see any reason why more devs don't give us old fashioned manual saving, particulalry with FPSs.
I'm even more impressed with this great game now.

Saving (even autosaves) and then loading breaks custom difficulty. Delightful indeed. /s

In single-player I believe you can change difficulty on-the-fly after loading a saved game. Therefore in single-player, you can always set your desired custom difficulty and fix any load difficulty differences.

....as long as you don't mind not getting difficulty related achievements instead of whatever your custom difficulty qualified for. After loading a save they are limited to Normal.

It's actually likely that when you change the difficulty on the fly after loading to try to correct it, one or more sub features to your custom difficulty are still set to "normal", as this would explain why the achievements will still max out at normal like the Escape screen and the mouseover description of any subsequent saves will tell you.

The achievements and leaderboards don't matter that much but I play co-op, not single player, and in co-op the difficulty can't be changed for both players, only the host. (and other player can't do it himself.)

The standard difficulty modes are a ♥♥♥♥ show of terrible design decisions, so you have to use custom to make the game not suck. Custom doesn't work in co-op. I personally bought the game for the co-op campaign. And even in single player custom difficulty breaks every time you load a save.

Don't even get me started on the rifle physics and scope mechanics, ballistics and wind, because they're beyond r-e-t-a-r-d-e-d. If gamers knew anything about rifles and scopes, the review section would be 100% negative. Which makes me sad, for a game with "sniper elite" as its title.

P.S. Manual saves are an expected standard feature of every game. This thread is like praising a food product for being safe to eat. Duh, it's supposed to be. If you're at the point where you think manual saves are a breath of fresh air you've probably been playing too many ♥♥♥♥♥♥ console ports.

Yes you have a good point but this game is not a true "simulation" and not touted as such, it is just a game. As to the quote above, you should try Far Cry 5 for co-op campaign mode (with a good team-oriented friend like I have), it is extremely well-done for this purpose (keep in mind you can't do this right from the beginning, it takes an hour or two of single-play). You can save your game before you quit! I think this is the future of previous single-player games and with the right buddy it's extremely fun & satisfying. And keep in mind FC5 is a game not a sim.

Yes agreed on bullet drop and wind, but IMO not "r-e-t-a-r-d-e-d" (now I know why you put in hyphens, Steam censoring is sometimes ridiculous) but instead simplified to make the programming easier, i.e. lazy programming, and in the case of gravity drop to make the calculations quicker. But again, it's a game not a simulation, and I must say one of the best I have ever played - and I've played many hundreds.

I think you missed the point. Manual saving is a thing of the past now and all is checkpoints. I'm praising manual saves because few games allow that nowadays which is a shame as I ONLY play single player.
Couldn't give a toss if it's a ♥♥♥♥♥♥ console port as long as I enjoy it.
I think Ubisoft has it right (Far Cry 5) where it does both checkpoints & manual saves, it loads the last one of either. If you forget to save, no problem, you don't have to be obsessive about saving it, you can just forget about saving if you want.

Wait... what?

In my SP campaign sessions the game is autosaving every few meters or so...

I can manually press the save key (F5)...

I can escape to the main menu and chose "Save"...

I can even play my SP campaign in Co-Op and then press F5 and quit and start in SP again where I left off

Am I missing something?

I recently played an older Tomb Raider that had no manual saves.
There was a couple spots I had trouble with, the problem is you have to keep replaying the same easy section to get back to the part that keeps killing you. Get's boring fast.

You are correct Thiesen, it's just been a very long time since I've played SE4 single-player and I had forgotten.
There's no saving in MP competitive & co-op survival.

I just found this thread. I must say that old fashioned saves are a great feature, at least for me. My scheduled is very erratic and I very much need to be able to save and "continue later".

Games that want to dictate "when" I can save are just a pain in the tuckus.
