Questions for the Developers? Ask here!
Hello! I'm Katie Hallahan, one of the designers of Cognition, developed by Phoenix Online Studios. Thanks for checking out our game and (hopefully) voting for it!

If you've got any questions about the game, please ask away and I'll be happy to answer them! You can check out our website for info as well:

And you can see the gameplay of the demo here: (played & commented on by Toegoff, one of our Kickstarter backers)

Thank you!

Hey guys! It looks like you have a great game :-) I just have two questions. First, about how long is a run-through of the game? Second, are there any plans for DLC? Thanks, and keep up the good work!

Hi MikeJoeSchmoe, thank you!

Cognition will be a 4 episode game--the kind of structure you see in Telltale Games. Each episode will be released approx. 4-6 weeks after the previous one. So that's sort of DLC. In the traditional sense of adding more gameplay beyond that, though, there are no plans for it.

Playtime: The episodes run from 4-8 hours each; currently Episode 1 is the longest at about 6-8 hours.

Thank you! As for the when--we have not yet announced a general release date, although we aniticipate making that announcement soon. In general, "Fall 2012" is what's been announced so far.

If we get greenlit, my understanding is it takes a few weeks to incorporate Steam's SDK into the game, so my guess would be 2-4 weeks after we've been greenlit, if that comes after the general release.

(There are a lot of qualifiers in there, I know, so I hope that was clear! There are a few unknowns to try and factor into that guess, really.)

Hello there! I happen to love point-and-click adventure games, and it would be great to see the genre get a revival here. I was wondering how old the footage you showed us in the trailers was. Forgive me, but the models looked a wee bit rigid, and I hadn't seen much gameplay. Would it be safe to say that the footage you showed us was beta footage? Don't you think a release date of fall 2012 is a bit soon? I won't pretend to know more than you about development, that would be stupid of me, however I am currently trying to hone my programming skills and the two month time constraint has me chomping at the bit. Once again, I am ignorant of the engine you are using, whether it is in-house or third party, as well as the date of the trailer footage, perhaps I could judge better if I had more updated content. I am simply curious, I hope you don't mind indulging me. Best of luck!

Hi deathmarks,

There's a link in my first post in this discussion to a demo playthrough video I encourage you to check out--you'll get to see a lot more of the animation and the gameplay in there.

Episode 1 is in polish right now, so while some of the animations you've seen may be updated in the release, what's in the trailer is generally final work. As for the game, we've been in development since January of this year, and are using the Unity engine. Obviously, this isn't a AAA game but an indie, and while we'd love to someday build to a higher level of realism, quality, detail, mo-cap, etc, we are quite proud of the work we've done for Cognition. That said, we are always working on raising the bar on our work. I expect that as the episodes progress, you'll be able to see evidence of this. And we're always interested in getting constructive feedback on what we can improve on as well (doing so has been a HUGE part of the increasing quality and changes we made during development for our freeware game, The Silver Lining,

We'll also be releasing another, longer, trailer in the near future that will show some more game footage as well.

Thanks for the questions and support!

1- Will the game be available for MAC or Linux? If not at launch, any plans?

2- Will the game support controller? Is it able to be played in Bic Picture Mode?

3- Are you planing to do a 1 Button does all? Or is it like King Quest where you can talk to a tire and use a person?

4- Will there be an inventory system? Or is it just puzzles and action sequences?

5- Will there be time based puzzles or a variation where the time you take to solve a puzzle mathers? Or nothing at all..

6- There are some games that aside of a normal hint system also have a "Show me everything I can interact". I like that. Sometimes I don't want the game to tell me what to do but I didn't know that i could click that fly. Are you planning to do that?

7- Will I get to shoot somebody?

I know I havn't asked about the most important mechanic, the see the future one, but I don't want to be spoiled about that.

Thankyou, Egas

PS- OH! Price range ? (per episode and for everything)

Hello Egas! Good list of questions :)

1. It will be on PC & Mac at release, with iPad version to follow. We'd like to do Linux eventually, but there's no set plan for when that would happen right now.

2. If you mean Steam's Big Picture Mode, from what I understand that doesn't require anything additional from us, so yes! As for controller-use, not really. Cognition is designed as a point & click game, using the mouse (or in the case of the iPad build, a touchscreen).

3. The gameplay style is more like King's Quest. You'll collect items, talk to people, ahve different actions available, etc. The actions available are context-sensitive, though, and specific to whatever it is you're clicking on, rather than the "old school" five cursor set-up.

4. Yep! There will be an inventory and plenty of puzzles with the items you find and pick up.

5. There are a few timed puzzles, and yes, whether you complete them in the time limit will matter.

6. For Cognition, there's an icon in the upper left corner of the cursor with a big question mark. Clicking this shows you all the hotspots on the screen. Apart from that, there is an in-game hint system in the form of sending text messages to Erica's dad, a retired cop. As well, the cursor highlights when you mouse over something that can be interacted with.

7. Well, we didn't put a gun in her inventory for nothing. ;)

8. Price range: Exact price is TBD, but somewhere around or possibly under $10/episode, and a season pass (buying all episodes up-front) would be at a discount from buying all 4 separately (i.e, if it were $40 to buy each episode individually at $10 each, the season pass might be $30-$35).

Not the deepest question to put out there, but... are you guys planning to make the soundtrack available? Downloaded the main theme that was put out during the kickstarter campaign, and the trailer music just has me even more excited.
[POS]katiehal16  [utvikler] 9. okt., 2012 @ 8:49
Yes! The soundtrack will also be available for purchase after the game's released. :) Our composer, Austin Haynes, is amazingly talented. The other song featured in the trailer is by Robert Holmes, of Sierra fame, and his daughter Raleigh Holmes, also the voice of Erica. They're both in the band The Scarlet Furies as well.

Congrats on getting Greenlit everyone!
Just a quick question on behalf of the bundle purchasers. Any idea when/where/how the Steam keys will be dispensed? Just curious what the status is on that. I think there's multiple bundles the game was packed with as well. Got mine from Indie Royale, for instance.

[POS]katiehal16  [utvikler] 9. juli, 2013 @ 12:15
Hi FluidLogic! Thank you! :D

We are figuring that out on our end right now as well. First up is getting SDK incorporated into the game and nailing down a release date with Steam. Once we know how it's all gonna work, we will start getting in touch with customers about it. :)
