MAIN LORE: The assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria by Gavrilo Princip, a Bosnian Serb, on June 28, 1914, marked the spark that would ignite a global conflict. A month later, Austria declared war on Serbia, and soon Europe was engulfed as alliances fell into place on either side of the battlegrounds. In an attempt to distract the Entente, German Emperor, Wilhelm II, funded the Chilembwe uprising in Nyasaland. Though this strategy found brief success, it became one of Germany’s greatest missteps. The war’s end saw the Central Powers, particularly Germany, devastated by Entente forces.
At Versailles, while many expected the French to demand severe penalties from Germany, it was Britain that insisted on the harshest reparations. Much of these funds were channeled to support the White Army in Russia, which fought against the Bolshevik government in Petrograd. Italy underwent its own upheaval when the fascists marched on Rome, leading to the overthrow of King Victor Emmanuel III, who had rejected Benito Mussolini’s demands. Meanwhile, in Turkey, British-backed Greek forces dealt a critical blow to Mustafa Kemal’s campaign in the Turkish War of Independence, though Kemal and his supporters continued to fight for Turkish sovereignty.
In Eastern Europe, Polish leader Józef Piłsudski reluctantly aligned with the White Army in the Polish-Soviet War, pursuing his vision of a buffer zone between Europe and a potentially Bolshevik Russia. After intense fighting, the Polish advances were halted near the Dnipro River, and a ceasefire in 1926 left Russia fractured. Back in Poland, political tensions peaked with two attempted coups in April 1926: one led by Piłsudski’s Sanation movement, and another by Dmowski’s National Democratic movement. The latter succeeded, shifting Poland’s government structure.
Then came October 1929 and the Wall Street Crash, bringing economic devastation that no one foresaw. Germany was hit especially hard, with its political landscape splintering as the Republic lost control outside the central region. Spartacists, Nazis, and reactionary factions seized territories in the west, south, and east, respectively. The British Raj, already difficult to maintain, survived only in southern India. In the U.S., populist Huey Long rose to the presidency on his "Share Our Wealth" platform, promising economic reforms.
By late 1933, Engelbert Dollfuß had risen to power as Austria’s Chancellor. His efforts to consolidate control faced resistance from all sides as he sought to establish an authoritarian regime. Meanwhile, South America saw ideological rifts deepen, with Peru and Argentina adopting fascism and Chile embracing socialism. After 1929, radical ideologies once confined to Mussolini’s Italy and Bolshevik Russia began gaining traction across the globe, fueled by the hardships of the Great Depression. These movements threaten to create a dystopian future - unless they are swiftly countered. Only you have the power to shape humanity's destiny, to steer the world toward salvation or chaos.
