How difficult is it to make a mod changing an NPC's look?
My character's married to Jenassa, but I'd like to change her look a bit - all the existing Jenassa mods seem to make her 'pretty', with weirdly smooth skin and so on, which isn't what I'm after. The closest I found was this http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/16000/? which I like a lot except... it kind of makes her look too much like my character (minus the warpaint, obv, and my character has red hair rather than silver) and I'm not sure about the white eyes.

So, I'm wondering whether it would be worth trying to make a mod myself, or whether it's likely to be massively confusing/frustrating/end with me coming on here crying that I've broken my game..? (Have never even thought about making a mod before...) I also saw this, but I'm not sure about it http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/36047/? I don't want to change her drastically, mostly I'd like to change her hair and adjust her face a little

Go for it there are lots of video tutorials out there. Worst thing that can happen is you have to delete your mod and start over. Get into modding and you open a whole new world for your self. As for npc's there is quite a bit you can do with their looks in CK.
Quick edit my follower Boots well she started life as faendal from riverwood, a quick sex change and lots of messing with her looks and she don't look nothing like an elf now...

firstly~ "Smooth skin" usually implies a universal texture mod that applies that effect to every NPC (well, usually every female NPC). If this is the case, then your Jenassa will have that skin until you remove the texture mod O_o (but so will your character.)

If that's not the case, then altering NPC appearances is easy-peasy :D
Downside is that the view you get in the Creation Kit isn't always exactly what it looks like in Skyrim >.< But you can change tons ^^

G'luck~~

p.s.: On a difficulty scale of 1 to 10, where 1 is opening up the Creation Kit and 10 is making Falskaar, this kind of thing is about a 1.2

Heh, well, it wasn't so much that the skin was smooth as she looked kind of as though she were made of wood and had been highly sanded and polished? Or like a boiled sweet or something. Hard to describe, but it looked odd.

So far only finding tutorials on how to create your own NPCs, but I'll keep looking. Ta!

Altering the NPCs appearance should be part of any decent "Create your own NPC :D" tutorial :P

Probably near the end too, assuming they just go through the tabs from left to right XD

Orrr, you could just open up CK, load up Skyrim.esm and Update.esm, go to the Object Window, click on "Actors", type in "Jenassa" into the search bar. (Hopefully she pops up with that ID XD)

Click on Jenassa to load her up. Go to the tabs on the top, find the right-most ones. There should be the appearance tabs :P

Tinker with them >.< Figure out what they do. After about 5 retries and scraps (my own personal experience D:) you'll start to understand what they mean and get something that starts to look less like putty XD

Please don't give up on it, you will not be sorry to get into modding it's the best fun. Can be frustrating when you get into scripting but what you want to do is quite simple and just takes a little patience and time. I would reccommend starting with the "Skyrim NPC Editor 0_75_1" on the Nexus, there are Tutorials for this on YouTube to help. If you want to you can of course use the CK that is in the Tools section of Steam but that is more complicated.

Heh, yes, but I wasn't quite sure if the same stuff would apply to editing an existing NPC! Yes, I am a total noob ;) I've had a go at fiddling with Jenassa (oh, except I think I only loaded Skyrim.esm, not the Update.esm...) unfortunately my screen is tiny and the preview area didn't want to expand, so I'm kiiiiiiinda going off about 20% of her face, but I think I got the hair I liked, will load up the game and see if it's done anything. Thanks again!

Will definitely look at Gopher's vids, have watched a lot of his 'how to put mods into your game without killing it' and lets plays/mod reviews :)

Good grief, I think I actually did it! Jenassa: http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=242059230 I'm not mad keen on the hair, but the hair options for female elves are all a bit dreadful (I like the half-shaved one, but my character has that, and I'm not sure they're quite the type of couple to copy each other's hair ;) ) and I like it more than her vanilla hair.

I've got the plugin I made nearly at the bottom of my load order, just the Reproccer/Reproc patches after it, and I didn't change anything other than her looks and I think maybe I changed her from 'foolhardy' to 'brave', so hopefully it shouldn't do anything weird to my game?

Thanks for the encouragement and stuff :)

Good job and grats ^^

Now, go make Falskaar 2.0 :P XD I kid, I kid ^^

also, I wouldn't worry about having "anything weird (happen) to my game."
It should be fine. Worse case scenario is you get another mod later that - at the bottom of the load order - undoes your changes D:

You forgot the confetti and party poppers for this occassion! >:O

How can we properly celebrate Gnewna's great achievements without them ^_^

The first mod you make is always special :D Seeing you make noticable changes to your own gameworld is quite the rush ^__^~
nannyoggins Mar 25, 2014 @ 7:42am
Fun isn't it, you get a huge high from the creation process. Now go and make a huge pot of coffee because you are probably hooked and will no doubt be up until 3am modding!:)
DFH01 Mar 25, 2014 @ 7:46am
Sorry about the confetti and party poppers, but i'm so poor i can't even pay attention.
gnewna Mar 25, 2014 @ 7:47am
Hehe! Thanks, all :D Thankfully, I managed to use the scroll wheel on my mouse to zoom in enough that I could juuuuuust about see half her head if I tilted it just right, so I wasn't just blindly clicking stuff.
DFH01 Mar 25, 2014 @ 7:50am
If you right click in the preview window you can alter the zoom speed etc etc..
