@Lucy: Camera should still be mostly top down, when going underground I imagine a Dungeon-Keeper like interface would work well.

I agree it would look nice 2D and 3D, but with the failed Kickstarter Campaign I was concerned people are not valuing the 2D graphics as much as they would 3D.

The vectorized style of the 2D graphics so far would lend themselves well to a sort of low-poly geometric 3D environment that will still allow for a multitude of active units on one screen.

Part 2/2

Also sometimes 3D will look worse than a beatifully painted 2d. Like what I've seen from the pics/vids Formicarium looks really beautiful. It would look even better with HD grafics. Would it look like that aswell in 3D? You said you could keep the artistic style - but does that really work in 3D?

But in the end I will be happy to support anything you come up with as long as it doesn't change the game too much, cause I'm sure you can make a beautiful game with or without 3d! And maybe it has some great advantages and it will be even better? :)

Cheers,
L

Personally I'm sceptical with 3D, because it >can< make navigating complicated and controlling units very clumsy. I've had bad experiences with 3d.

I guess it totally depends on how you want to use it. When you look at Empires of the Undergrowth, they use 3D but the environment is essentially 2d, so it's easy to navigate. Building tunnels underground is very easy in 2d when you see it from the side, or from the top, whereas if you had a real 3D environment, you would be able to build tunnels up/ down/ left/ right/ forward/ backward - how would you visualise that?

Part 1/2
sehrgut42 Jul 13, 2017 @ 11:10am
Please don't add 3D . . . getting the game as originally specced will be big enough of a project without throwing away the existing work just for 3D. Maybe a sequel, once the 2D game is finished?
Bersaelor  [author] Jun 11, 2017 @ 12:18am
I'm also experimenting with 3D engines, what do you guys think about keeping the artistic style but going 3D?

With usually >10k sprites per scene it was already challenging to get FPS up in 2D, but there are some tricks to let the GPU handle most of the work. Just not necessarily in Unity, will have to reach deeper into the toolbox for this one.

@Irolden @Lucy: It's on hiatus but not dead. Had to get back to earning money with my work for a while..

If you like it, subscribe on formicarium.org or like us on https://www.facebook.com/Formicarium2014/ . I'll inform you when we start a new funding campaign and with the help of a dedicated fanbase it might just work next time :)

Without funding it's hard, I am now Lead Developer in a big company and I can only work on formicarium during my free time..
If you want you can subscribe to the newsletter at 'http://www.formicarium.org' , where I will post new developments. Of course I will also make announcements here, when there is something :)

@Dinoman9877 @PMonkey:
I'm getting married and working a lot for ComedyCentral / Nickelodeon so I'm sorry I haven't gotten around to much development this year. Never stopped having it in the back of my mind and as soon as I have more time available will push it forward again :)
Dinoman9877 Aug 7, 2015 @ 9:41pm
Any rough estimate for a release date? I am extremely excited to play this.
[PM] PMonkey Jul 31, 2015 @ 10:34am
I wish you guys luck during your next round of marketing, let's get more interest in this game and reach your funding goal. I'm looking forward to the next developer update!

Bersaelor  [author] Apr 27, 2015 @ 1:57pm
Thank you all for your support, I can now announce that we are Greenlit by Steam and can start working on an Early Access!
@Freakaseud: She's the big egglaying beast thats only sitting there and breeding ;) (All her life is eating, hanky-panky and egglaying, not so bed eh?)
@dominik.maussner: Ant-hive vs Ant-hive would be great, I already did some experiments on a Desktop PC. Not sure if It will be in release though, since the framerate might be dropping too much due to the amount of simulation going on just for one. In short: On Tablets: No, on Desktop: Maybe, but you'll need a very modern CPU.
Harconn Apr 19, 2015 @ 2:28am
WIll there be other CPU-played ant colonies on the map, so you can have an ant war against other ant colonies (in nature there are many ant fights for food and territory)? Maybe even a multiplayer?
JeffersonAirplane Apr 14, 2015 @ 5:35am
I Love Ants, where is the Queen?
remilton Apr 5, 2015 @ 8:02pm
Yes! This is a game I would definitely play.
Bogos Binted? Mar 23, 2015 @ 7:34pm
I'd love to see ore of these kinds of games.
wolfstanbjord Mar 22, 2015 @ 4:58pm
Yes! a modern ant simulation!
Draco1962 Mar 15, 2015 @ 6:04am
My son's and i played SimAnt when they were younger. Seeing this brings back many fond memories and I would gladly purchase it!
ironhead36 Mar 6, 2015 @ 6:34am

386er Feb 25, 2015 @ 7:03am
Is there a way to get access to the Early Windows Beta?
CapriByte Feb 15, 2015 @ 12:48pm
This is the kind of game i want to see getting popular.
386er Feb 10, 2015 @ 8:02am
Great :) I love sim ant so i hope this will become a revival! Good luck!
jennytablina Feb 3, 2015 @ 3:53pm
I love titles like Dungeon Keeper and Spore like life-sims, so you have my vote. Good luck!
Bersaelor  [author] Jan 10, 2015 @ 1:45am
Thank you!
We are planning to unlock abilities of different ant species for the colony you are playing with, by bringing new males&genes to your queen. There might be the option to choose between red/black ants but it will be purely aesthetic.
We feel we would limit gameplay to much by only allowing one species of ant at a time, so we have a system that works like a Tech-Tree in a strategy game where you can progressively unlock more castes/abilities.
Harconn Jan 7, 2015 @ 3:37pm
Voted, too! Big Fan of your idea. Will there be different ant species to choose from? And enemy colonies/termites to fight against?
Squirrel1256 Jan 7, 2015 @ 1:56am
I do remember Ant Sim it was a fun little game. This game looks like it could be quite fun, you got my vote! :D:
Bersaelor  [author] Jan 1, 2015 @ 10:56am
@adupaix12: The innuendo is fully intentional, lot's of people had a hearty laugh reading it :)
After all there is tons of insect hanky-panky going on in the game!
Without reproduction we would have no use for our elaborate genetics system.
Jarn Argence Dec 31, 2014 @ 5:52pm
Reminds me of sim ant. Not really sure how many people remember that game. PLease... change the subtitle. If you read it too quickly, you get the complete wrong message.
Tim Tebow Dec 30, 2014 @ 4:33am
I just don't see much of a future here, terribly sorry.
8-I Dec 29, 2014 @ 11:34am
