The engine will turn on automatically once the battery reachers a certain threshold. Manual ignition should not be necessary. If you think it is not working as intended contact me personally on steam.

so a few issues with this train and its other skinned variants i can only see gen output if i turn on manual ignition and it cannot hold a electrical charge my train died multiple times while loading other than that inf electric on it runs amazingly love this thing

I am currently working on implementing a system which would allow that and many more features (TC v2: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2588251631 ). In the meantime it is not possible.
