Alright, thanks for the suggestions, I'll check out the video and I could probably try the .vmt change real quick, but it is past 5 a.m. and I should probably get some sleep. lol

yea check those if you'd like

but that error occurs usually when the .vmt is a blank, 'lightmappedgeneric' type. if you open the .vmt and change that to something like vertexlitgeneric you should have your texture appear.

in addition to the links 8sian provided, i would also recommend referencing and looking at what other people have done a bit more. for example look at the things they've used and research the topic (so for example if a .vmt is using phongexponenttexture, try looking it up on the valve developer community wiki to see its purpose and how it works)

I finally got around to changing the name and compiling again. Got in the game and the model was completely invisible except for an outline when you drop it. I got this message on repeat: "Material models/weapons/model_name/model_name_material does not support vertex format used by the mesh
(maybe missing fields or mismatched vertex compression?),
mesh will not be rendered. Grab a programmer!". Any ideas on what I need to change?

ah i remember having this situation when i did a hatchet mod a long time ago

have you checked to see if the .vmt file for the texture is the same name as the material in blender? also is the $cdmaterial in the .qc the same as the actual folder structure, does the .vmt also follow this structure

regarding the other points, 1024 resolution is fine. and regarding the suffixes (d and e) that's the common naming convention for mods like these, they mean 'diffuse' and 'exponent' respectively. they aren't necessary but help with organizing.

displacement and elevation maps are afaik, something source would never really use, i think that's more for actually deforming the mesh according to the black and whiteness of the texture. don't take my word for it on that part; i could be wrong.

Continuing on from the below comment, I noticed your folder included a texture with a .d and one with a .e name, but I wasn't sure if they stood for displacement and elevation or if they were even required. I've been hitting a wall with getting my texture to show up on the model in game for a few days now. Not finding very good tutorials on this.

How did you get the texture to show up in game? I've been working on my own knife mod and can only get the model to show up in the characters hand with a pink and black checkered texture instead of the one I made. In blender I tried making a generic texture map and even a normal map and exporting to .smd and making a very small change to the .qc file and compiling and packaging, but to no effect. Is 1024 px too large for the texture map in game or do I need a displacement map or what would you suggest?
