Putt-Putt: Pep's Birthday Surprise - Walkthrough (On-Going)

In this Guide, I will walk you through on Putt-Putt: Pep's Birthday Surprise.

(NOTE: This is the Final Putt-Putt Adventure game, the first & only Putt-Putt game that uses Windows XP & the Final Junior Adventure game to date.)

1. Story - Birthday Party Time Revisited!

Putt-Putt and Pep return home from a birthday party. Putt-Putt had the best time at the party while Pep feels depressed about something. Soon, Putt-Putt discovers that Pep had never had a birthday before and he is not sure when is Pep's birthday. To cheer Pep up, by the suggestion of pet store owner Mr. Kibble, Putt-Putt decides to celebrate his birthday in the morning, as it is the anniversary of the day he found him. Putt-Putt needs a way to distract Pep while filling the bag with party supplies: balloons, decorations, a new collar, a cake and a magician's act. He just needs to get everything he needs before the party the next morning.

1-1. Dashboard Interface

The dashboard was updated to compensate for the improved visual quality of the game. It has a more defined, shaded look. Aside from some color adjustments, only one new object was added. The smile's lips on the horn button's face are closed, unlike the previous versions of it. A minor change is that the radio station number (97.3) is no longer shown in the radio's screen due to its background color being too bright. The word "Load" is now purple instead of red, and the Quit button's box has completely different colors: orange, red, and dark blue, and the word "Quit" is capitalized. Instead of the yellow back arrow, a button for the options menu appears in the upper left corner of the screen attached to the sun visor.

1-2. Main Menu

Click on the Menu icon on Putt-Putt’s dashboard to display the Main Menu Bar. At the Main Menu Bar, you can choose from the following

Options:
Save = Save up to 12 games.
Load = Load and continue a previously saved game.
Quit = Exit the game and return to the Windows desktop.
Options = Display the Options Menu

1-3. Options Menu

Adjust the following game settings to your liking. When finished, click on the Done button to return to the Main Menu.
Animation SFX = Adjust the animation sound effects volume.
Background SFX = Adjust the background sound effects volume.
Music = Adjust the background music volume.

Key-Trigger Hotspots = Hotspots are fun, clickable animations that are hidden throughout the game. Normally, to play these animations, you click on them. Set this option to ON if you instead want to use any letter key on the keyboard to activate hotspots.

Display Full Screen = Toggle full screen display mode ON/OFF. Uncheck this option to play the game in a window. When the game starts up, it automatically boots up into Full Screen Mode. You can also Toggle this by pressing Alt & Enter at the same time.

1-4. Saving & Loading

Once you start the game, your progress is automatically saved whenever Putt-Putt drives to a new location. You can also save your progress manually from the Main Menu by clicking on the Save button.

To start the game where you left off, click on the Load button from the Main Menu, and then click on one of the 12 available saved game slots.

1-5. Keyboard Commands

Skip the current scene/animation = Enter
End current character dialogue = Spacebar
Access the Main Menu = Esc
Toggle Key-Trigger Hotspots ON/OFF = K

1-6. Minigames

Dairy Barn:
Out on the farm, Torvil’s dairy barn is a great place to get the milk needed to make birthday cakes. However, a bunch of cows are blocking the way to the milk machine! The easiest way to make the cows move is to offer them food. Drop some hay in the square that you want the cow to move to. PuttPutt can drop hay in any square near him, but cows can only move one space at a time. Eventually, they will make a path that Putt-Putt can use to drive up to the machine and retrieve some nice, cold milk.


Hen House:
The Hen House is a great place for Putt-Putt to retrieve some eggs. Click on a chicken to make it lay an egg, and then watch the egg as it falls down the ramp. Use the sweeper to move the egg into the correct tube so that it lands in the right spot in the carton. After one round, however, the colored eggs need to land in the correct color slots in order for them to be packed. If you make a mistake, you can send the lizard to eat the eggs if it lands in the wrong spot.


Bunny Herding:
Bunnies are everywhere, and they’re driving the Cartown residents bonkers! Putt-Putt must herd them into Marvin the Magician’s magic hat by using some tasty carrots as bait. However, things can get more difficult if Pep’s in the room, because all Pep wants to do is chase the bunnies! Hold out carrots to lure the critters back into the magic hat, and everyone, including the bunnies, will be happy.


Cake Decorating:
After you get the ingredients for the Cake, Mrs. Goodbake will need to make it. After she makes the cake, you can bake it & decorate it in any way you like.

2-1. Walkthrough Guides - Target Requirements

There are 5 things to do in order to thow a Birthday Surprise Party for Pep:
1. Collect string for the Balloons
2. Obtain Decorations from the Party Store
3. Recover the Magician's Hat in exchange for a Magician's Confirmation Card
4. Craft a Dog Collar Present for Pep
5. Collect Ingredients for Pep's Birthday Cake

2-2. Walkthroughs Guide - Pep's Dog Food

After the introduction, head outside Putt-Putt's house, along the way to Mr. Kibble's Pet Store, be sure to pick up the rubber bands that's on the floor at the first & second section. When you arrive at Mr. Kibble's Pet Store, he say that he has 4 new flavors in stock for Pep to try: Spicy Taco, Kiwi, Peanut Butter, or New Improved Original With Lumps. To cheer Pep up, by the suggestion of pet store owner Mr. Kibble, Putt-Putt decides to celebrate his birthday in the morning, as it is the anniversary of the day he found him.

While talking to Mr. Kibble, he has suggests that a Dog Collar complete with Dog Tag. Then Ms. Widget will show up and give you a Party Planning Bag. To make Pep's Surprise Birthday the best party ever, you'll need to collect 5 things in order to do so: Balloons, Decorations, a Magician's Confirmation, a Dog Collar with Tag (which is Putt-Putt's Present to Pep) & a Birthday Cake. Return to Putt-Putt's house to collect Pep then take him back to Mr. Kibble's Pet Store so he can try the dog food flavors: Spicy Taco, Kiwi, Peanut Butter, or New Improved Original With Lumps (I don't know why Pep always chooses Spicy Taco), Pep will choose Spicy Taco and you'll get some Puppy Food as well.

2-3. Walkthroughs Guide - Dog Collar & Tag

Head over to the Cartown Entertance then use Pep to move the ducks into the pond, afterwards pick up the second Rubber band that's at the entertance to Cartown then talk to Mildred the Mail truck so you can listen to a musical number and proceed. Then backtrack to Mr. Kibble's Pet shop then have Pep to play in the Ball Pen of the store so you can make the Dog Tag.

To make the Dog Tag any way you like, you just need to choose the shape and color of the Dog Tag that you want, after that you can engrage your inscription onto the Dog Tag (up to 14 characters long). When you're done pull the lever to complete the Dog Tag & you'll get the Dog Collar & Tag, then head back to the enterance to Cartown.

Once you have the Dog Collar & Tag, you'll need 4 more Key Items to throw Pep his Surprise Birthday Party. Those items are Balloons, Decorations, Magician's Confirmation & a Birthday Cake.

2-4. Walkthroughs Guide - Decorations

From the Cartown Enterance, head Right then right again until you reach the Mystic Happiness Shop to get the Crystal Pendant, then backtrack to the enterance but before that, stop by the Bakery enterance to pick up another Rubber Band.

Then from the Cartown Enterance, head left to the Party Store. Before using the Crystal Pendant on the Crow, click on Pep to distract him at the Fire Station first to keep his Surprise Party secret safe, then use the Crystal Pendant on the Crow to get the Key then you can use the key to get inside the Party Store by bringing in the Party Supply Boxes inside the store, then talk to Ms. Widget to get the Decorations for Pep's Surprise Birthday Party.

Once you have the Decorations, you'll need 3 more Key Items to throw Pep his Surprise Birthday Party. Those items are Balloons, Magician's Confirmation & a Birthday Cake.

2-5. Walkthrough Guides - Magician's Confirmation

From the Party Supply Store, exit out then pick up Pep at the Fire Station. Then make your way to Torvil's Farm to pick up the Apple Basket & the Rubber Band that's there, then head to Baldini's Grocery Store to use the Apples on the Carrots in the Apples section to get the Carrots, then head to either the Library or the Fire Station where the Magician's Hat is. The Location of the Magician's Hat is Randomized for each walkthrough so its either at the Fire Station or Library, but be sure to pick up the Rubber Band that's outside of the Library too.

Once you found the Magician's Hat, use the Carrots on the Magician's Hat to play the Bunny Herding Minigame & return all the bunnies to the Magician's Hat so you can get it. Once you have the Magician's Hat, head to the Magic Shop then give the Magician's Hat to Marvin the Magician to get the Magician's Confirmation. While at the Magic Shop, you can use the 6 wands to change Putt-Putt's Color for a short while for fun. Once you have the Magician's Confirmation, you'll need 2 more Key Items to throw Pep his Surpise Birthday Party. Those items are Balloons & a Birthday Cake.

2-6. Walkthrough Guides - Balloons

From the Magic Shop, head over to the World's Largest Ball of String is then talk to Hank the Security Car & he'll tell you about his String that he used to work on the World's Largest Ball of String in the past but he'll also mention that he's been working on a side project: the World's Largest Rubber Band Ball, but he only needs 5 more Rubber Bands to get his Rubber Band Ball into the World Records Book. If you found the 5 Rubber Bands all over Cartown, you can hand them over to Hank the Security Car. If not, then you'll need to do some backtracking.

Once the Rubber Band Ball is Large enough, the authors of the Goodness Book of Records will show up to record the New World Record that's been set by Hank the Security Car. Afterwards, a cat will show up during the photo shoot and wreck the World's Largest Ball of String.

After that, you can take some string with you, then head over to playgrounds, click on Pep to distract him so that he doesn't find out about his Surprise Party, then use the string on Reggie & his Balloon Vendor to get the Balloons. You can also stop by Rover's Ice Cream place to invite Rover after clicking on Pep to distract him. After talking to Rover, you try all the Ice Cream flavors if you like before continuing. Once you have the Balloons, you'll need 1 more Key Item to throw Pep his Surprise Birthday Party. That item is a Birthday Cake.

2-7. Walkthrough Guides - Birthday Cake

From the Playground or Rover's Ice Cream, head to the Bakery by backtracking and click on Pep to distract him so he doesn't know about his Surprise Birthday Party once you're inside the Bakery & distracted Pep, then talk to Mrs. Goodbake, she'll tell you what you need for the Birthday Cake. The remaining Ingredients you'll need for the Birthday Cake are Eggs, Milk, Sugar & Flour. Since 2 of them are already done for you, Mrs. Goodbake will ask for the 2 remaining items randomly which are Randomized per walkthrough. You'll get a Sugar Bag if she asks for either Sugar, a Flour Bag if she asks for Flour and either a Milk Bottle or Egg Container if she asks for either Milk or Eggs.

To get the Flour or Sugar, backtrack to Mr. Baldini's Grocery Store to get either the Flour or Sugar, but be sure to select the correct ingredient when you do so. Afterwards, head over to Torvil's farm to get either the Milk or Eggs.

If Mrs. Goodbake asked for Eggs, you'll have to play the Hen House Minigame to get the Eggs, if Mrs. Goodbake asked for Milk, you'll have to play the Dairy Barn Minigame to get the Milk.

Once you have the 2 ingredients, backtrack to the Bakery, and click on Pep to have to distract him twice before using the Flour/Sugar & Eggs/Milk on Mrs. Goodbake. Once Mrs. Goodbake has the ingredients, she'll work on the cake, once its completed, you can decorate it to your liking, when you're done decorating after clicking on Pep once to distract him then again after decorating, you'll get the completed Birthday Cake. Now that you've got all 5 of the Key Items, you can head back to Putt-Putt's house and start to decorate and get everything ready for Pep's Surprise Birthday Party.

2-8. Walkthroughs Guide - Pep's Surprise Birthday Party

Once you've got all of the 5 Key Items, backtrack to Putt-Putt's house to start decorating. The next day, Putt-Putt wakes up Pep and receives his surprise party after the cars from Cartown surprised him. While blowing out the candles, Pep accidentally blows the cake frosting onto Putt-Putt's face. They take a lot of photos so Pep will remember his birthday forever.

3. The End

Druing the End Credits, you can Click on the Next Button or on the photos to scroll through the Photos see the what happened during & after Pep's Surprise Birthday Party. After the credits and photos, you can also choose to Play Again by Clicking YES which will RESTART the game or clicking NO which will EXIT to Windows.

4. Cartown In-Game Locations

After you talked to Mr. Kibble & Ms. Widget about what you need to do in order to plan for Pep's Surprise Birthday, you can head for the Cartown's Enterance. There are some In-Game Locations that my catch your fancy.

4-1. Putt-Putt's House

Putt-Putt & Pep live together in this house. Its also where Pep's Surprise Birthday will be held.

4-2. Mr. Kibble's Pet Store

Mr. Kibble works at this Pet Shop where he sells Dog Collars & Puppy Food which comes in 4 Flavors: Spicy Taco, Kiwi, Peanut Butter, or New Improved Original With Lumps. You can also make a Dog Tag for Pep here as well.

Rubber Bands: There are 5 of them scattered around Cartown waiting to be found & their locations are Randomized for each walkthrough. Be sure to find all of them before handing them to Hank the Security Car so he can finish the World's Largest Rubber Band Ball & have it recorded into the World Record Book.

Crystal Pendant: Used to get the Key to the Party Store from the Crow outside.

Air Freshener Tree: Every car could use a nice pine scent, and this cardboard tree works well.

Dreamcatcher: Keep this beautiful accessory nearby if Putt-Putt is going to be sleeping.

Fuzzy Dice: On a nice, sunny day in Cartown you’ll want to look your best. What better way to accessorize than a big pair of Fuzzy Dice!

Party Planning Bag: Used to store the 5 Key Items you need for Pep's Birthday Surprise Party.

Balloons: The 1st Key Item you need for Pep's Birthday Surprise Party.

Pep: Putt-Putt's Pet Dog, Normally clicking on him will make him bark. But in this game, clicking on him will also make him play with his friends or run errands which will distract him so that his Secret Surprise Party is kept safe.

8-1. Secret - Color Changing

In other Putt-Putt games, Putt-Putt's color could be changed, but here, when magic wands are used to change his color including invisible, Putt-Putt reverts back to purple shortly after.

8-2. Secret - Reused Putt-Putt Music

Some of the music is reused from Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo, as George "The Fat Man" Sanger composed for this game.

8-3. Secret - Loading Times

Unlike the previous Junior Adventures games, there is a clock on top of the screen to show how much time is left whenever Putt-Putt travels to a different location, but it isn't of much use.
