Cornwall Railway and West Cornwall Railway

During the Railway Mania of the 1830s and 40s, Southampton quickly got a direct connection to London via rail. This caused fears that Falmouth would lose it's port, so the Cornwall Railway was founded to build a line between Falmouth and Plymouth North Road, where it had a connection to the South Devon Railway. The line between Plymouth and Truro was opened in 1859, after years of planning problems and money shortages because of countless river crossings. The extension to Falmouth was opened in 1863. The line was amalgated into the Great Western Railway in 1876.

This map also allows you to re-create the West Cornwall Railway, which was opened in 1852 and provided a line between Penzance and Truro. Although there was a connection with the Cornwall Railway in Truro, train changes must be made as the West Cornwall Railway was standard gauge, which is very unusual for the region of England. This choice was the Railway's demise, as the "Associated Companies" (South Devon Railway, Bristol and Exeter Railway and Great Western Railway) demanded to change the gauge to Brunel gauge to allow direct trains to London. The West Cornwall Railway did not have funds for this, and so was bought by the Associated Companies in 1866.

This map allows you to recreate both the Cornwall Railway and the West Cornwall Railway, and all of the branches West of Plymouth, including ones operated by the London and South Western Railway, to Bude and Padstow. Experimental map sizes are required to use this map.
