Vidsquish (Formerly NieRepack) - Compress and customize Nier: Automata cutscenes to suit your screen!
Autorstwa: Lulech23
Save hard drive space, improve in-game cutscene performance, and customize videos to suit non-standard aspect ratios with this all-in-one, easy-to-use tool!

Nier: Automata uses a number of pre-rendered cutscenes which are encoded in an MPEG-type format at ultra-high bitrates, resulting in inefficient videos that occupy a large amount of space and may perform poorly depending on your hardware. Furthermore, the game engine was not designed to crop or letterbox videos on non-16:9 displays, resulting in stretching for some users. While some limitations inherent to the game itself prevent solving all issues without an official patch, with the right tool, users can still enjoy an improved video experience better suited to their needs.

Formerly NieRepack, Vidsquish now provides an easy-to-use GUI to do just this, with all the necessary tools packed right in. Check it out at the official Steam group:

  • Easy-to-use GUI with all the necessary tools packed right in
  • Pause/resume support for long conversions
  • Support for three levels of compression, offering everyone the ideal compromise of filesize and image quality
  • Two resolution profiles to further tune size versus quality
  • Letterbox and crop options for 21:9, 16:10, 3:2, and 4:3 aspect ratios
  • Optionally upconvert framerate to 60 FPS using either frame blending or advanced motion estimation
Vidsquish is available to download from the official Steam group.

It is highly recommended to use this new version as it offers features and updates not available to NieRepack.

Still want to use NieRepack anyway? It can be downloaded either here[] or here[].
Vidsquish does not require installation. Simply download extract the application to the directory of your choice and run Vidsquish.exe

It is highly recommended to make a backup of your original video files if you have the free space for it. Vidsquish is safe to use and will not likely corrupt your data if it is interrupted, but depending on the features you select there may be no going back to your videos' original state. Alternatively, if you don't have the free space for a backup, you can always run a Verify Integrity of Game Files operation to restore the original videos from the internet.

Select the Nier profile in Vidsquish and click the "?" icon to the right. It contains instructions on how to get cutscenes to play at 60 FPS in-game. :)

Hello I tried this but it didn't work, the cutscenes are still 30 fps even though I put the setting on 60. I don't know if its cause of my hardware but the game runs 60 fps.

24 hours for 1% definitely doesn't sound right! That should be 100% for just about any CPU capable of running the game in the first place.

I'd say check your video folder to see if any temp files are being created and if they're growing in size over time. You can also open up the Vidsquish project file in Notepad to make sure nothing looks amiss there. If the project file doesn't exist, something is probably preventing Vidsquish from writing to the directory.

hey, thank you so much for this mod! is it nornal to take more than 24hrs for a single 1% when converting? i know you said it takes a while, just making sure. thanks.

ah!! Thanks!! XD

I'll keep all that in mind :)

You need to use specific settings in the FAR mod to get unlocked cutscene framerates in-game. Click the ? icon next to the Nier profile in Vidsquish for details on what's needed.

I personally won't bother posting source files on pastebin. Imagine you have a comment on the file, what are you going to do? Send emails back and forth with new pastebin. Github handle all of that process.

Also, don't forget that any piece of software you put on github looks good on your CV.

Thanks for your work btw :) it did fix the problem I had of aspect ratio. The framerate didn't change at all in the game though.

I do disagree :D I'm sure you expected that lol

What you are actually doing by sharing the profiles already is actually doing open source. The only difference it makes with GitHub is the people who are going to check and see what you did. People here are gamers, people on Github are developers. On GitHub people are much more enclined to actually do a PR.

Also I think you should open source de GUI. It's a very simple software but somehow it manages to take ~19% of my CPU all the time when it's running despite the actual work is in a different process. I'm sure someone with knowledge in whatever framework you used will know exactly how to fix that.
