Playable Poster & Philosophical Toy
Optikammer’s story begins in the early 1800’s when “Philosophical Toys” were a bridge between emerging sciences and popular culture.

Often derived from experiments, they were commercialised as novel and enlightening amusements for adults and children.

Optikammer echoes that spirit. Looking something like a collection of nineteenth century playbills – it's typographic environment acts as a visual scaffolding for the core content – working optical artifacts.

A progression of the idea of an infographic, it integrates dynamic data readouts and player interaction with compelling content to tell its stories more effectively than would ever be possible in a video or printed poster.

Insightful interactivity is a guiding principal for Optikammer

Although it is an unconventional game, or for some not a game at all, it tells stories by playing with things – something not usually possible with linear media such as books and videos.

Each way of interacting makes sense of every piece, while retaining their original form.

  • A side-scrolling parallax platformer comprised of eight core levels.
  • Over two dozen distinct interactive parts with more than fourscore historic playable works contained therein.
  • Gameplay mechanics range from physics simulations to multi-state triggers to fully controllable photo-realistic avatars.

Optikammer is a kind of playable poster or interactive infographic. Rather than being a gimmick, interactivity it is key to discovering the exquisite ingenuity of incredible items that have led to today’s cinema, animation, motion capture, video games and much more...

Saluto!

Many thanks for all the comments so far!
Everything in the videos is gameplay footage.
Please see the announcement: How important is interactivity in Optikammer?

Optikammer tells stories by playing with things.

It’s a side-scrolling platformer with over a hundred gameplay elements from physics simulations to controllable photo-realistic avatars.

It will be available to play in web browsers and as a downloadable app.

Really appreciate the interest and help spreading the word ;)

I really like the design, but do not really think this is a game. rather it is a infographic, I really would not pay to learn history but I love to see the final result. but as I said, I would not consider a video game.

There is no gameplay, yes holding the "D" button isnt good enough to be considered gameplay. Now, If you made this a website..

It looks nice, but I have no idea twhat it is. I choose "ask me again later", add more information about gameplay (or some gif with sample level?)
