Overview
Artificial Selection is an experimental 2D top-down shooter where every gameplay feature evolves using machine learning algorithms. That's right, the enemies, weapons, and even maps will evolve depending on your choices and how you play. Artificial Selection also provides an infinite variety of strategies with billions of possible weapon combinations to choose from.

Current Features
  • Fight against enemies that evolve more advanced behaviors and weaponry as you play.
  • Use millions of possible weapons with unique effects, ranging from slowing enemies to creating miniature black holes.
  • Every weapon or attack you see on an enemy is possible for you to attain.
  • Demolish the environment as much as you want. Everything is destructible and any blast marks or bullet holes you make are permanent.
  • Utilize the map and campaign editors to make your own levels.
  • Fight in epic boss battles. Then take their weapons!

How Enemies Evolve
In Artificial Selection the enemy robots get harder the more you play. But this isn't through simply increasing enemy stats, these guys will actually learn new and better strategies according to how you fight them. The game learns which enemy behaviors and weaponry that you have the most trouble with, and will continue to replicate and mutate them, causing an artificial selection of enemy units.

So how do you defeat enemies who adapt to your strategies? Adapt to theirs! Find out what counters their strategies and weaponry, and use it to your advantage. Having trouble with fireball-shooting enemies? Get a Pneumatic Cannon or Sonic Minigun and deflect their fireballs back at them! Or use the environment to your advantage by hiding behind movable crates or even destroying walls to create alternate paths to sneak up on your foes!

The following features are planned for the close future:
  • A full campaign and story
  • Even more possible weapons
  • The Armory where you can test out the weapons you find or create
  • Enemy units that can be customized, saved, and sent to your friends to see how they fare against them
  • A global enemy leaderboard, where you can challenge yourself against the most evolved robots in the world

Artificial Selection is being made in a custom engine using the XNA Framework.

Development is still active (and the game looks way different now!), but this greenlight concept page is not. I was hoping no one would figure it out, but yes, that would progressively make the enemies easier. But if you use that strategy, it makes the game harder overall, since you have to pick out which ones are bad and try to get them to shoot you, without dying from the smart ones later.
