Bristol & Exeter Railway (IND)

Popis
Once the GWR was approved for a railway connection between Bristol and London, the Merchants wanted a connection to Exeter and the West country via rail. The Bristol & Exeter railway was approved in 1836, while the GWR was under construction. The line decided on using Broad Gauge, with the GWR. An alliance between the two railways formed and they shared Bristol Temple Meads station. They leased the line to the GWR to operate services from London to Exeter. The first section of the line was opened between Bristol and Bridgwater in 1841, and had a branch to Weston-super-Mare. They reached Taunton by 1842, and Exeter St Davids in 1844, connecting with the South Devon railway at Exeter St Thomas to Plymouth. The railway was absorbed by the GWR in 1876, with the South Devon Railway the same year. This map allows you to recreate this route, as well as a lot of the branches to places such as Minehead, Barnstaple, Chard, Yeovil, and other lines such as the LSWR between Gillingham and Okehampton, and the northern section of the S&DJR from Burnham to Templecombe.
