The ComboSprite Editor: How Kynseed's Trees Are Made
  • Wind simulation parameters for testing and fun.
  • Time of day settings.
  • Shadows (we're still looking into how we want to do this in a way that won't be too demanding on the engine).
  • Changeable background images.
  • A little plot of land to place them in perhaps?
  • Ways to share your creations.

The ComboSprite Editor is one of the many rewards included in the £50 tier level and we'll be releasing it sometime between Early Access and release. Like the game itself, it'll probably be an Early Access version that will be worked on further and made to look much nicer over time. And who knows, if you make something we particularly like we might even put it into the game!

Lastly, we've got a really cool giveaway going on right now where you could win a rare signed Fable Legends poster as well as a rare hobbe figurine from a collector's edition of Fable II that was never released. The giveaway will end at the same time as the Kickstarter and if you want to score some Fable loot we encourage you to check it out. Click here to enter the giveaway[]!

The final stretch of the Kynseed Kickstarter is now upon us and we'll need your help in spreading the word as much as possible over the next 30 hours. Thank you all for your continued support and we hope you've enjoyed taking a look into how Kynseed's lovely trees are crafted. See you in the next update!

A New Prototype Update
  • Days changed to be about 2 minutes longer.
  • New music for the minigame area!
  • Holding 'A' to interact is no longer required. (This is a test for this build but we're liking it so far!)
  • Tree parts alpha out when standing behind them. (This is a test and we might well try a different method next time!)
  • Added a new Mouse & Keyboard 10 slot toolbar to replace the 3 slot controller mapping:
    - Works when using Mouse & Keyboard only
    - Keys 0-9 change the active mapping
    - In inventory, keys 0-9 map something to that slot (you can also drag something onto a slot)
    - Keys 0-9 to choose a tool slot on pickup
    - Added a menu option so you can go back to the controller type mapping if you'd prefer
    - (KNOWN ISSUE: If you are the lucky recipient of multiple glass jars in your playthrough you won't be able to equip them from the inventory as yet, this will be corrected in the next build.)
  • Made mouse inventory selection change the selection instead of requiring a click.
  • Gift giving and other similar screens no longer have the bright white background behind them (also, the items have little boxes now making them clearer against the ingame blurred backdrop).
  • Back button on controller will now exit out of all menus.
  • Adjustments to the radial presentation to hopefully be a bit clearer. Also reduced the time for it to show slightly.
  • All animals follow with run if the player runs.
  • Improved the reliability of the fishing hook creating ripples on certain locations!
  • Minigame throw area is now cordoned off preventing certain 'tactics' from making the minigame too easy.
  • Some improvements to the way sims choose direction for facing while moving.
  • Dog can now bark in all 4 directions so no longer slides quite as much.
  • The cooking pour action doesn't require stirring at the same time.
  • Fish fade out and run away a bit better when scared.
  • Using the keyboard only for interacting doesn't cause repeated sound fx (due to mouse pointing one way and keyboard another).
  • Fishing rod put in inventory when skipping tutorial.
  • Potential fix for a crash when interacting with a farming spot.
  • Gift giving filters heads to correct item now and is a bit faster in doing so.
  • Tooltip for secondary function of active mapping stays onscreen as a reminder.
  • Prevented situation where holding XYB caused the bar to overflow when changing levels.
  • Intro screen resolution improved.
  • When using Mouse & Keyboard, the left D-Pad changes to a line of icons.
  • Fixed an issue where players could get stuck by completing a task and picking a new crop at the same time (pressing a key to dismiss the invisible message would get you moving before).
  • Level collision and layering fixes.
As usual, please mail us issues or feedback to or send your mud-stained scrawls on a scrap of parchment via pigeon messenger to Old Fred who lives in Uxley Mill.

If you want to get more involved we will have our own forum up and running after the Kickstarter, but for now you can chat with us here on Steam or even head to this reddit page where you can mingle with the other adventurers and get lots of juicy info. Drop by for a visit and the villagers of Mellowbrook will roast an ox in your honour. Although Anne Ox won't be very pleased about that!

That's all for today's update. As always, a big thanks to all our supporters and please keep spreading the word about Kynseed!

Release date: Early Access in Early 2018

Made by a couple of ex-Lionhead Fable devs, Kynseed is a quirky 2D sandbox RPG now available on Kickstarter. It's an adventure of a lifetime - literally.

From two developers who helped create the Fable series comes Kynseed, a whimsical 2D sandbox RPG now on Kickstarter! Spend your days adventuring, farming the land while raising your family, or even running your own tavern, apothecary, blacksmiths or goods store.

Every person and domestic animal you meet remembers what you do, or fail to do.

You can step off The Path into the darker areas of Quill and encounter faery tale monsters and enticing mysteries.

The seasons will pass and living things will grow old and die. Faces from the past are replaced by the fresh young faces of new life.

And when you die of old age yourself, you will pass your family tree's Kynseed on to your children so that they may continue your bloodline and shape their own legacy.

Choose male or female and get to know the inhabitants of the land and be involved in friendships, romance, marriage and putting your family to work on the cheap.

Kynseed is a 2D sandbox adventure from veterans of Lionhead Studios’ Fable series. Drawing from years of experience crafting the iconic Fable titles, we aim to deliver an all-new quirky RPG filled to the brim with mystery, exploration, awful puns, and sandbox possibilities.

While invoking the spirit of past Fable games, Kynseed is infused with our own ideas and a mix of British folklore, ancient legend, and rustic traditions. We hope to capture these inspirations in an atmospheric world with whimsy, humour, and eccentricity, and not a single orc or high elf in sight.

You have grown up in your parent's idyllic farm in The Vale, a peaceful valley in the faery tale land of Quill. In time, you meet the mysterious Mr Fairweather, who offers you a mystical acorn called the Kynseed. Once planted, it will grow a magical family tree that will let you realise your potential.

But such a gift does not come without a price.

Will your name be carved on the walls of history or scrawled on the walls of the pub outhouse?

The land is affected by your choices and deeds. Seasons come and go and affect the world both visually and in gameplay.

Individuals and animals grow old and eventually die. Families remember your good deeds or wrongdoings for generations.

Pay the mysterious Mr Fairweather for powerful upgrades and revivals, at the cost of years from your life! Will you miss out on your child's development to buy that music box that makes dragons dance? Will your business suffer because you bought a pet cat that turns people to stone?

Wander from The Path and indulge in meaty combat against various nasty faery tale creatures that guard the materials and loot you need to become the greatest in the land.

Build friendship into romance and produce heirs to continue your legacy. Do favours for others and not only gain friendship but also juicy information and gifts.

A calendar keeps you up to date of festivals and events. Learn where and when the best ingredients grow. Attend various competitions, annual fayres, and don’t you dare be late for a date!

They're more than just sword fodder. Each creature has a sim and their own traits that you can take advantage of. Remember, even dragons need to go to the bathroom now and then. (That wasn’t a pile of gold that Smaug sat on!)

Own a tavern and craft beers with bizarre effects. Be a blacksmith and forge weapons and tools to order. Manage your apothecary and mix cures for a variety of bizarre poxes and curses.

Heed the advice of the Old Fishwife and the locals to find out everything from where the rarest items can be found to where and when the best places to conceive are! We're not just a little stitious. We're super stitious.

Every village has their own customs and quirks. Visit the annual cheese bowling rite and encounter Wiki Men, Fred Barleycorn and wear the Trousers of Fertility, as passed down through generations. (I really hope they wash them...)

Hunger dictates combat prowess so a proper breakfast before some monster slaying goes a long way. Discover and use proper recipes though, and you can take your fighting to the next level, or even use the Traits in food to distract, weaken or even scare away enemies!

All items and materials, have unique traits. From medicinal to hallucinogenic, shrinking to fattening...Want to feed laxatives to herds of sheep and lead them through town? The creative possibilities for fun are endless.

Domestic animals and critters have opinions of you based on your actions. If they like you enough they may just let you ride them!

No mythical world is be complete without music to go with it. The title music has been made by Russell Shaw but also helping us out with beautiful world music is Matthijs den Daas.

We are a team of three little pigs building a brick house to keep the wolf from the door. Two of those pigs are ex-Lionhead Studios developers and the other ran the Fable community for many years. With over 30 Years of experience developing the Fable series and its community (amongst others), we hope to infuse our games with the same charm, eccentricity and humour that permeated Lionhead's games.

While he did work for 22cans he was not working as a producer there, more on the community management side of things and one of several over the years, one I'd number among those used and abused by the studio as much as the customers were. SamVT left when the abuse by Peter became too much to handle. Dave left after his contract expired in anticipation for the real disaster about to happen when the "Combat Update" for Godus turned out to be Godus Wars. G.K. seemed to enjoy blowing smoke for the company and I have no idea why he left. Colin was hired as a complete jobsworth and even flagged reviews of Godus Wars. I think that's about all of those from the CM/PR side of things, and I will definitely agree with you that there are some former 22cans toadies to keep an eye out for because those acorns probably didn't fall far from that tree.

As Matthew Allen is still welcome at the largest (formerly) Godus fansite after most others were banned from it, that says quite a bit.

@Matthew Allen:
Positivity is deserved for those who offer honest and forthright designs to their intended audience, so that positivity is only a delight to provide! :steamhappy:

A pity that I hadn't noticed soon enough to back this when I was on vacation, but it looks like you guys have a concept firmly in mind and on paper and have a solid plan to deliver it. Personally, without offering endorsement for anyone else to buy (as even what my nephew plays on this account is often taken as such) I would be delighted to check this out in Early Access to offer my own assistance...haven't had reason to say that too often as of late, sadly enough.

And honestly? I can't remember the last time I had a good joyous laugh at what I've seen in a Kickstarter pitch:

I hope this game won't make the days as short as most Harvest Moon games and Stardew Valley did. Some people, like me, love these farm simulation games, but I play them to relax, not to feel stressed all the time because I don't have enough time to do everything I want. So maybe think about making 2 modes, one "serious" mode where days pass as fast as in Harvest Moon or Stardew Valley, and maybe an "easy" mode where time passes half as slowly? That would be great. I've been looking forward to a fully relaxing farm simulation game for such a long time now...
