Reference Data
This is a guide based on the Bulbapedia[bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net] and Pokemon Wiki[pokemon.wikia.com].
Biology
Mudkip is a small, amphibious, quadruped Pokémon.
It has a blue body with a light-blue underside.
It has a large head with a blue fin on top and a light-blue tail fin.
It has black, beady eyes and orange, star-shaped gills on its cheeks.
By using the fin on its head, Mudkip is able to detect changes in air and water currents as well as bodies of water.
Its fin can also point in a certain direction, as seen in the anime.

Behavior
When sleeping, they bury themselves within the soil at the edge of the water. Mudkip and members of its evolution family dwell in swamps or other wetlands, deep inside isolated islands, due to their dislike of freshwater lakes and ponds.

Habitat
Mudkip are born on beaches, and then swim to swamps on remote islands to live. Very few Mudkip are hatched in swamps. Mudkip and its evolutions tend to live in swamps and wetlands because of their dislike of fresh water ponds and lakes. They are an uncommon sight in the wild.
Evolution
Mudkip evolves into Marshtomp at level 16, then into Swampert at level 36.
Trivia
  • Mudkip has the highest Attack out of all the starters at its base form.
  • In a poll conducted by Nintendo of Europe, Mudkip was voted as the fan favorite starter, with Typhlosion and Blastoise close behind.
  • Mudkip is the subject of a popular Internet meme known as "So i herd u liek mudkipz?".

Origin

This Pokémon is based on the mudpuppy or mudskipper, or also possibly an axolotl. Since Mudkip is the Mud Fish Pokémon it might also be based on the gilled African lungfish.

Name origin

Mudkip is a combination of mud and skip, or it may be a shortening of mudskipper.
Mizugorou may be a combination of 水 mizu (water) and ムツゴロウ mutsugorō (mudskipper).
