Quick start notes:
Lightsabers can be constructed at the component assembly bench.
Crystals can be refined from rocks at the electric smelter.
Rare crystals can be found out in RimWorld for sale from merchants or at enemy bases.
Legendary crystals can be found similarly to artifacts as well as in the clutches of Star Wars faction leaders.

Technical Details Information
Lightsabers could be the most extensive C# coded weapons available in RimWorld.
Included on a lightsaber are the following C# libraries:
  • Extra sounds Component
  • Activatable visual effect component
  • Crystal slot loadable component
  • Oversized weapon component
  • Deflection and reflection component
  • Customized lightsaber C# library

Most of these elements can be used by other modders by relocating the assemblies to their own mod folder to make their own mods using these components. So if you'd like to make a gun with different kinds of loadable ammunition, or a different sort of laser sword, now is a good time.

Managed to get it to work. All it took was installing a new bench for me. After that, when I reinstalled the old bench it showed up there as well.

Finally figured out how to enable lightsabers without having to draft your pawn, fixes most of the complaints I have with melee hunter mod that I wanted my Force User to use lightsabers to hunt animals. It requires Mod: Sidearms to be installed:

1.Equip saber as primary then draft pawn.
2. While drafted, click sidearm (It's okay even if you switch to fists)
3. Undraft and switch back to lightsaber
4. Go hunt stuff with lightsaber
5. Useful side-effect is that your force user can finally defend against raiders

@Jeffrey: non-force users has limited DPS with lightsabers - you should add The Force mod
@Cirno: yes. Force users can lvl up their deflection chance.
@Endygaming: there are Jedis, siths if you add the The Force mod, there is Imperial and Rebel factions if you add the SW Factions mod (including SW gears and weapons), and there is a pretty new Android mod. (+ new Stormtrooper armor mod, Blast tech mod) you should look around in the workshop.

do I need the The Force mod for my pawns to be able to block off projectiles? My pawns keep failing to do so

Well i get fps drops everytime i activat the lightsaber can you fix that :(
