Actually two more things that I found interesting but don't lead to anything:
- After the failed Kickstarter of Eon Break the devs wrote an article describing what they thought went wrong in their approach. I kinda like that, too often you only see perspectives from people who succeeded with questionable advice, this is a nice writeup for aspiring crowdfunding projects.
- The last game that zgames developed is ChaseCraft, a Minecraft inspired infinite runner for mobile (yay). The game's website died even before zgames in 2018 but the game still seems to be rather popular today. Interestingly the official YouTube channel is still active, with the last post being 5 days ago as of writing this. They apparently also heaviliy featured a prominent YouTuber (who I have never heard of), called Unspeakable, who still does promo for this game. So idk what's going on there...

To finish this off, I want to share a little fun bit: If you google "softeq game development services", you should reach a page on softeqs domain with those advertised services. The idea is to pitch a game idea and their inhouse studio (that is most likely zgames or what's grown from it) will help you create it, but that's not the point. The site has a large banner at the top, with a stock image of a controller, a VR set and a screen with a video game playing. Maybe the game looks familiar...

The third profile is the one of Sergey Maziuk, a game developer/ designer with incredibly sparse activity and complety in some cyrillic language. Apparently he was looking for work around June 2020 and found it: at zgames, October 2020.

So here's my guess: zgames acquired Eon Break in 2018 but due to their lack in success could not keep afloat. They were reintegrated into softeq and while the rights to Eon Break are probably still laying around somewhere, they don't get used since softeq does not actually develop their own games. The studio now gets used on all kinds of projects that benefit from game design, or to be hired to help create other games.

The wiki page of softeq as well as their own page makes things a bit clearer. Softeq call themselves a "full-stack development company" and originally founded zgames as an inhouse dev team in 2008, seemingly successful. According to the linkedin page of the founder of softeq, Chris Howard, the team developed into a spin-off in 2012 with a focus on mobile development. According to wikipedia and Howard it was successful then, even winning awards through remakes of older games.

Back to linkedIn though: The first viewable profile for me is the one of Howard, whose page features zgames quite prominently and where zgames is called "its own company". The second one is a Business Development Manager called Anna Lutsenko, who also appears on softeq's own site as Account Manager to contact when scrolling through their projects. According to her linkedin page she joined zgames in 2018 and it is not a company but a division of softeq.

A little more digging: The original website shut down between October and December 2018, based on saved data by the wayback machine. While I don't know if that correlates with the end of the project, there is another lead: It appears that Eon Break was picked up by zgames, a game developer for apparently all kind of games. At the time they have 2 published games on mobile.

So while the website of zgames still features Eon Break as "in development", the studio also seems to be abandoned since 2019. Their last posts on Twitter and Facebook are from May 2019 and even the website still has a "Copyright 2019" at the bottom. One thing is not abandoned though, the linkedIn page for zgames still lists 12 employees. Of those I can look at three profiles (linkedin only allows profile viewing of people who are reasonable close to your own network) and this leads to softeq, at which at least 2/3 work.

From quick search it does not appear that this game will ever see the light of day. The Kickstarter was unsuccessful and although the devs said to continue development, I don't think they did so for long. The last tweet on their twitter is from July 2017, looking for an investor. The game's website does not exist anymore. Facebook page looks abandoned as well, around the same time.

I'm honestly a bit sad as well, I forgot about this game but coming back it still looks really fun to me, even 4 years later.

Hey! It's been a long time and this game never left my mind. I'm just wondering if this is still in development or if it's been dropped. Thanks :)

will the game still launch even with the death of greenlight?
Mr. RandomGUYS Oct 19, 2017 @ 11:18pm
Is it true that it's coming out in December?
