Tomatekh's Historical Religions

Description
This mod adds additional historical (pre-modern and indigenous) religions to the base game. Leaders previously lacking a religious preference (Aztec, Greece, etc.) are updated to prefer an appropriate historical religion. Several additional generic icons are also included and the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox symbols have been updated.

The mod is fully updated to work with Gathering Storm, Rise and Fall, New Frontier and/or any other combination of DLC

Note:
- It is recommended to disable this mod before using any scenarios which might implement their own religions.
- If using the mod in multiplayer, all players need to have identical settings in the configuration table.

Included Religions:
For a list of the included religions and leader preferences please see the mod's civfanatics page.

Configuration File:
The mod includes configuration options in the "HR_Religions_Config.sql" file which may be used to switch between the Lite and Complete versions of the mod, enable / disable individual religions, randomize leader preferences, change the custom icons, and more.

On a PC the default Steam mod folder is:
~\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\workshop\content\289070\870850597\

However, these folders my vary based on your individual install settings.

Inside that folder is the config file “HR_Religions_Config.sql” which you can open with notebook or similar program. The file has instructions when you open, but you largely just change 0s to 1s or vice versa down the left of the file to enable/disable different loading options and then save the file.

- Lite Mode and Complete Mode:

Historical Religions may be loaded in either a Lite or Complete Mode which can be switched between by using the configuration file

By default, the mod loads in Complete Mode which prompts the mod to load the full list of new religions which can be further customized with the configuration file.

Alternatively, you can use the configuration file to enable Lite Mode which prompts the mod to load with only a minimum of new religions to represent the leaders included within the base game and its DLC.

The configuration file also includes options for

- Unused Religions
- Change Default Names
- Unpreferred Religions as Custom Icons
- Random Preferences
- Alternate Religious Preferences

Adding Mod Support:
For instructions explaining to mod makers how to add support for your custom civilization, please see the mod's civfanatics page.

You can do something like:

Polynesia:
Oral Tradition/Ancestor Worship
Ceremonial Burial
Religious Center
Reliquary
Sacred Sites

Druid:
Fertility Rites/Goddess of the Hunt/One with Nature
Initiation Rites
Asceticism/Religious Art
Religious Unity
Sacred Sites/Underground Sect

I haven't played Total War: Pharaoh yet, but I've been meaning to get it soon.

What Pantheon and set of beliefs do you think would most resemble the Polynesian Manaism religion and the Celtic Druidic faith?

Yes, I've noticed that trend, too; it does seem to favour Christianity in Civ 5. hopefully, they'll address it in Civ VII. Right now I'm just waiting for the new Dynasties update for Total War: Pharaoh, while making a huge fuss of my friend's new puppy, which we did last week as well.

Looking over them again, I'm reminded how most of the included beliefs are really biased towards Christianity. So, there's no real easy choices for pre-modern non-Christian religions. If I had to choose for them, I'd go with something like:

Viking:
God of War
Ceremonial Burial
Holy Warriors/Religious Center
Defender of the Faith/Missionary Zeal
Sacred Sites/Heathen Conversion

Aboriginal:
One with Nature/Fertility Rites/Desert Folklore
Initiation Rites
Religious Community
(Honestly none of the Enhancer Beliefs really fit)
Sacred Sites

@ Tomatekh Here are the Civ V beliefs at the bottom of this article.

The Religions I am curious about are the Viking Forn Siðr religion as well as the Australian Aboriginal Tjukurpa faith.

@Tomatekh I don't mind it, but thank you for replying

I think about 4 of the symbols are technically variations of the swastika; it’s used in a lot of different religions. The specific Nazi design of the symbol is not used and you can use the configuration file to disable any of the symbols from appearing in your game.

@ECHO

At this point in Civ VI’s life it’s not really worth it in terms of the time required to do that sort of update, especially as there would be several difficulties making it work for multiplayer that I’d have to figure out and I haven’t coded in a while to do it quickly. If your friends don’t want to edit the config file, I’d suggest just sending them a copy of your edited config file and having them overwrite theirs with yours.

Yeah, sorry. It’s impossible for me to include everything. I mostly added religions based on requests and new mods that were made when I was developing this mod early in Civ VI’s life. I’ll keep them in mind when/if I make the Civ VII version of the mod.

@jesmith199

The mod calls ancient Mesopotamian religion “Chaldaeanism”.

@ianandsue5

Hey! Glad to see you’re still around and enjoying Civ! I’ve been well, but I’ll be honest and say I haven’t really touched Civ or moding in a few years at this point, so I don’t even remember what beliefs and pantheons are in the game anymore to give a suggestion. Sorry.

Oh no. The Hindu symbol (3rd image, 7 to the right 5 down) plus Hitler mod is about to be crazy
ECHO 19 May @ 12:49am
Are there any plans to have some of the config options be part of the frontend UI? For multiplayer, asking my friends to navigate to and edit the config file gives them an aneurysm.
I'd mainly like to use this mod as a library of custom icons that can be renamed which requires a non default config.

No Maronite options 😢
