Description
This is the first in a series of scenarios based on the 8th of June, 1985, using the Exeter to Paignton line - this woud been a summer Saturday. Information from Gen archive websites has been used to determine which locos were used on different services.


Today's journey is with 45 058, which worked the 1M22 11:28 Paignton to Manchester service on this day.


Future scenarios will focus on other services on this day.

You will need Class 45, Class 50, DT Mark 1 and Mark 2.

I can remember going from ESD to Penzance in the 1980's,the train was a 4 car bloody skipper set,in other words a Leyland National bus on a railway chassis,and to think these are still in use in the 21st century

Pretty much everything in this one was based on the 1985 Summer Saturday timetable, and what I found on Achieve Gen Sites. So some locos were known to have worked that day, while others are based on what worked other Saturdays.

But going through the timetable, there were very few local dmu's used on a Summer Saturday, except towards the evening. And what few dmu's ventured out, they were mainly used on the Exmouth or Barnstaple services - services were pretty sparse then - barely even every hour!!

The 09:14 from Brighton, went to Plymouth in 1985. Reading other sites, it was mainly the Oxted commuter set (plus 3 extra coaches to make it up to 12) out for a jolly to the seaside. Might have a go at that one next.

Mid 80s at Exeter was my era (sigh).

All of the old WR hydraulics were long gone by then. Apart from that a pretty comprehensive list of loco types (although you omit the - even then - ubiquitous HSTs.

Apart from railtours 40s never ventured to the southwest. An apart from the very occasional "china clay" 37s that escaped from the Cornish the only (fairly regular) 37 turn was a Saturday summer afternoon relief from York to Paignton that could find itself hauled past Bristol by a North East split headcode type. Also, the 46 variant Peak had only just disappeared by 85.

Still the occasional 25s could be found up to the mid 80s.

"Standard" 33s sometimes ventured west of ESD but a regular summer treat was the generally double-headed 33/1 type on the Brighton-Paignton which sometimes even ventured west with rake(s) of 4TC stock.

Don't forget the "interesting" plethora of first generation DMUs that still more or less monopolised the locals.

Hi if it's any help,other locomotives for Western Region in 1985 class 08,31,33,37,40,45,47,50,possibly cl,52 Hymeks and Warships were probably with drawn by 1985
