The Collections
On a regular basis the question pops on reddit or forums related to Cities: Skylines "What's the must have mods atm", but there's no quick good answer to that, as it all depends on what you're looking for in the game and to some extend what your computer can handle. So I figured I'd create a few collections to make it easier for new players or old returning players to find the type of mods they're after.

They're a work in progress, so feedback will be helpful. Perhaps the categories are too broad or perhaps I'm missing some completely. My goal is to keep these collections up to date too, but as I don't run with all these mods (there's at least a few I don't use :P), reports of broken mods (or fixed ones which aren't on the lists yet) will be helpful. :)

  • The Basics - Mods which should IMO be integrated into the game and have a low impact on performance
  • Detailing - Mods allowing you to customize and add detail to areas of your city
  • Simulation - Mods adding to or expanding on the simulation aspect of the game
  • Transport - Mods adding to or expanding on transport networks
  • Utility - Very useful mods, which don't fit in the other categories
  • Visual - Mods which improve or change the visuals of the game on a global scale

@Machetian: Suggestions are always welcome. :) That one is already in the Utility collection since it didn't really fit in the other ones. :)

Avanya - Thanks for the clarification.

@paulp575123: It has - almost completely - been added to the game. But they didn't include segment length, which is why the mod is still on there. It's fine to use the game's indicators of 5 units, but when you're measuring out 82 units counting via the game's options just gets annoying. Ofc that might not be something everyone has needs for, but I left it on there since at least some players really missed that feature from the game's own version.

In your "Basic" listing, you have "Precision Engineering". On March 17th there's a note in the discussion for this mod that says it's been incorporated into the base game. Can you confirm this? If so, I'd suggest removing or making a note that it's now part of the base game.

@-DI- rmjohnson144: No and I don't have any intention of making any collections that you can just subscribe to without looking at the mods. That's a really bad idea - you should ALWAYS know which mods you subscribe to and what they do. Loads of issues arise from the fact that people don't actually pay attention to what the mods do, they just subscribe because someone recommended them or found in a collection. And then they add some more on top that are incompatible. If someone cba to read the description of the mods they're adding, they shouldn't be using mods. Sorry this isn't the answer you were hoping for, but I'm just not gonna help encourage the trend of not knowing what you subscribe to as it's the reason for sooo many issues people have.

Sorry to bother you, do you have a collection for workshop that doesn't break saves on loading from missing workshop/unsubscribed workshop/update/expansion/abandoned/patches/etc?

I only use info mods myself, so I'm unfamiliar with the workshop other than helping others with issues. I think this would be very beneficial to new players that don't want the headaches or even experienced users that don't want the headaches either.

I think this would ease the forums as over 90% of issues are workshop related. And help prevent frustrated users quitting from it.

Thanks for a great guide. I have it bookmarked for recommendation to others looking for collections to start off with.

@yp-freedom: I won't add More Train Tracks as the creator isn't active and the mod hasn't been updated in forever. The mod is likely to break one day and then we can't load saves using it. Better to use tracks in the road category. I'll consider the others when I update the lists after the dust settles from the patch and we know what broke and what still works.
