Description
Feed your animals with less waste! Works best with small animals.

Yesterday, I was observing my chickens, trying to figure out if eggs were worth the food to feed a chicken when I saw that they'd sometimes eat more nutrition than what they needed. If they needed 0.11 nutrition, they'd eat 3 kibble. (0.15 nutrition) The remaining 0.04 nutrition was wasted. This little mod makes it so that they don't eat more kibble than they need.

What the mod changes about kibble:

Kibble has a nutrition of 0.01, you get 250 kibble per recipe from the butcher table, and kibble now has a stack size of 375.
(1/5 the nutrition, 5x the production, 5x the stack size)

Kibble is 5x less valuable per unit and weighs 5x less
(Kibble is now smaller now)

It turns out that my chickens were malnourished due to my food shortage and their increased hunger rate causing them to lose 0.01 nutrition while they walked to and ate kibble, resulting in them wasting food. Animals traveling medium distances to their food will also waste food since it took them 0.01 nutrition to walk there. I wonder what other things can delay an animal's eating and cause them to waste food.

I want to shout out to SpoonShortage and her mod, GouRIMet 1.0. IT REALLY helped me understand how to make Rimworld Mods!

The RimWorld Wiki tutorial also helped.

Lastly I want to shout out Taveron's Increased Stack mod. It helped me on the final bits of the mod.

Here's the mod in .Zip form. I hope it helps out someone else like GourRIMet and Increased Stack did me.

I had a lot of fun making this mod and am excited to make more RimWorld mods!

Fun facts!
12 malnurished chickens can waste enough corn in a morning to make a simple meal out of the leftovers. They won't with this mod. When you're short on food, this waste doesn't help, lol.

You can download and manually install the 1.8.1722 version here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/9penfnk2djvm9fy/Effecient%20Animal%20Feed0181722.zip?dl=0

I went throught the def files and updated them so that they don't cause error messages.
I went and tested the mod on a test world and the mod works as intended.
I forgot how to upload and update a mod on the steam workshop. Please share if you know how.

How about A18?

@Jack I just checked, It's still working in A17. I'll get it so that it's green in the modlist again. Feel free to use it even before I finish updating it.

By the way I found chicken eggs to be the most efficient form of creating fine or lavish meals by a huge margin, unless you have a decent source of meat (which I didnt' since I was playing on an ice map). Interesting because that's probably true in real life as well!

Awesome! I studied this as well and have a spreadsheet (A15 though) with all the animals available and noticed the same problems. The smaller the bigger the waste. In fact, sometimes boomrats would starve and lose their pregnancy because they couldn't walk to the food pile in time!! And they only need a tiny amount of nutrition. Some, bears I think, are large enough that they're never full on their food bar and therefore never waste any.

Depends on what Vegetable Garden changes about Kibble and how it handles it. The way this mod works is it completely replaces how kibble works so if Vegetable garden does that too, then the one you load last will define how kibble works.

What does Vegetable Garden do to kibble?

Is this compatible with vegetable garden?

@Doc Savage I like where you're going with this! This'll make for a great mod. I am going to look into what I need to know to make it happen.
