"Living in Obscurity" - SFM - Saxxy Awards Best Drama Winner 2016

Did you like this video? (Category: Drama, Comedy)

"There are two layers to this video – comedy and drama. Comedy one is pretty self-explanatory.

But drama is little more hidden. When I was making the video I had in mind all the less known SFM-creators (including myself). When we make videos we might lack some skills, maybe we’re not competent in some areas, maybe we lack equipment, or the end result is not always that great. But despite all of our shortcomings, despite life getting in the way, and despite not getting recognition we strive for – we still make our SFM animations. And there’s no way we can compete against real animators with proper film school education, or teams of people who work hard on one video making custom props, sound, and music. Despite not having much of a chance we still continue to make videos only because of our passion and love for this craft and love for the community. And every time we do our best. In other words I dedicate this video to everybody who feels this way.
This video was inspired by a great movie called Living in Oblivion. But it also contains numerous parodies to other movies or just movie related stuff. To those who might not get all the references - there are parodies to Living in Oblivion (there’s a goofed line that I took right from the movie), Warriors, Blade Runner, Game of Thrones, Christian Bale freakout, and Leonardo DiCaprio’s Oscar curse that was lifted this year. I even added a couple of scenes from my own videos for fans of the channel.

I wanted to make more parodies, but since I missed Saxxy Awards last year, I did not know about the new 3 minute limit rule. So it caught me with my pants down. I actually had to shorten a bunch of scenes and had to cut a whole Blade Runner scene out, that I will upload in a couple of days as a separate video. I made an extended version of it instead.

The name of this video was “living.in.obscurity.2016.dvdrip.mp4” to indicate that at the end of the day Pyro’s little documentary got pirated and uploaded to YouTube, but I decided against putting it in the title to avoid visual clutter and confusion. And it was a little too meta.

These are the workshop items that I used:
The Say WHAT??? (megaphone) by Pte Jack
Podcasting/Radio Microphone and Table by Spectral Jojje
HWM Cosmetic Fixes/Improvements - Flap Tracker by [N-cognito]
Umbrella by Apples
Team Fortress Trucks Enhanced by Kalimando
Clapper board by Boomad | Nomad

P.S. It was very difficult to voice Pyro, and I was constantly not happy with the results. I re-recorded the whole script 4 times before settling on this take. I hope the VO wasn’t too bad…"

As an animator myself (with a Drama submission) the message you were sending resonated with me very well. Congratulations on the win, you really deserve it!!

Thank you everybody! I honestly can't believe I won. I've been trying to win this since Saxxy Awards started (except the last year due to technical reasons) and finally here we are. Thank you for voting and supporting me! This was quite a journey! :boomer:
