Saipan, CNMI

Description
Saipan is the largest island of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, located north of Guam and west of the Marianas Trench in Micronesia. This island and its neighbor, Tinian, are the twin peaks of a massive undersea mountain.

Formerly a Japanese possession, Saipan saw fierce fighting during World War II. After the war, it was part of the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands until the Northern Mariana Islands joined the United States in 1978. Today, its economy is centered around tourism from Korea, Japan, and China.

This map isn’t quite to scale: the island has been shrunk a bit so the entire island is covered. An expanded tile mod is recommended. You start in Garapan, the center of the tourism district. The imaginary highway runs from Nafutan Point north and makes a loop that approximates Isa Drive. The equally imaginary rail connection runs to the Kagman Peninsula. Ships visit Tanapag Harbor, northeast of the starting area. As in real life, there’s no running water, so you’ll have to pull from the ocean and pretend. Watch the runoff as it will collect in Tanapag Harbor.

No oil on this map, but most of the low-lying areas are fertile, and there’s ore in the locations of real-life quarries and former mines.

Two World War II bunkers appear on the map: the Last Command Post in Marpi at the north end of the island, and the bunker near the airport in As Lito in the southeast. Managaha Island, Bird Island, and Forbidden Island are separated from the mainland. Real-life beaches on this map include Micro Beach, Wing Beach, Pau Pau Beach, Kilili Beach, Ladder Beach, Obyan Beach, and Tank Beach.

Steep elevations and tricky water currents will make this a challenge for any mayor. Can you make Saipan rival Guam and Oahu?
