Best pages to download mods on 2016th + Install Guide
Av JaMyZPunchThis Why u punch you?
Here are some pages to download custom characters and mods for Quake 3 Arena. This guide will share pages that still work flawlessly on 2016. It will contain numbered pages from best to fine. I hope you grab a map or char from one of them.
(Note: To skip to the Install Guide just scroll to the bottom.)

Levels/Maps:

1.- http://lvlworld.com/
This is my favorite page to download maps. You can find any kind of map for any kind of need. I really recommend to get a look. Finally, the download speeds are nice and it is easy to download any map you want.

2.- http://gamebanana.com/maps/games/289
This page has several variety to choose from. The download speeds are not the very best, but the page is great to get maps.

3.- http://sst13.de/
A German mapper that hosts his own page leaving his leagacy as a mapper immortalized. You can see his works and download any of his maps there with a single button without leaving the main page.

Chars/Models:

1.- https://ioquake3.org/extras/models/
A page hosting many Quake 3 characters that can be downloaded with a single button without leaving the page. It has many releases. I recommend you to check it out if you want to get some extra characters for the game.

2.- http://q3files.com/index-5.html [BEFORE OPENING TURN YOUR VOLUME DOWN. LOUD WELCOME SOUND]
This can be a tricky page for first time users. It hosts nice models, but to download them can be chessy the first time. To download a character just click on the picture. Then a small window will pop-up. Scroll down and the download link will be there.

Note: If you are using headphones, TURN THE VOLUME A LITTLE BIT DOWN because the main page contains a loud sound that can freak you out.

3.- http://www.fileplanet.com/33347/0/0/0/1/section/Models
FilePlanet contains many models, around five pages that are ready for download. It may be useful in case you don't find any specific model you wanted on the first option I gave you.

Variety:

1.- Moddb

Addons: http://www.moddb.com/games/quake-iii-arena/addons

Mods: http://www.moddb.com/games/quake-iii-arena/mods

Files: http://www.moddb.com/games/quake-iii-arena/downloads

Moddb is a famous page that is home of many mods of many kinds of games. Quake 3 Arena is one of those games, and the page host maps, tweaks, extras and characters for Q3A. I recommend to check it out.

2.- Filefront or Gamefront

http://gamefront.online/files/listing/pub2/Quake_3_Arena

Filefront has a lot of files for Q3A. Weapons, effects, sounds, models, skins, maps, etc. You can find pretty much anything in this page. The only con is that sometimes it may be slow, and to download something you have to go through the one link system they have per file. It takes a while, but it is worth it if you find what you need.

Thanks for reading, and I do hope you enjoy any of the pages posted there. I do not want to exclude any page you may know. I posted the ones I used or use. Please feel free to share any page you use to download mods, but please. Avoid any page that contains virus.

Frag hard!

How to install a mod file.
Maps, characters and other addons:

This one always will come in a .pk3 file format. Every .pk3 needs to be dropped into your baseq3 folder that is on your Quake 3 Arena folder. The way to install any kind of addon for Quake 3 Arena is to drop the .pk3 files on your baseq3 folder.

As an example:
1.- You download a map that you like
2.- You open the file
3.- You will need to locate the .pk3 files, any of them. Sometimes authors put folders into the file, just look for the .pk3 (You should read the readme first just in case. Some .pk3 may be extras and probably can reeplace a sound or a weapon. Happens with many character files.)
4.- Drag any .pk3 that you see and drop it into Quake 3 Arena/baseq3 folder
5.- Play

Mods:

Usually mods come with a folder. If it doesn't come with a folder, but the readme states that you need to make one and put the files there, you need to do that. It is quite rare that an author does that, and if he or she did it. It was a little bit of a ♥♥♥♥ move to the user.

Anyways, the mods are easy to install. The ones that come with the folder just need to be dropped into your Quake 3 Arena folder. Just drag the mod folder and drop it to your Quake 3 Arena. Then when you load the game, go to Mods and select the installed mod from the list. Finally, load it.

That is pretty much how you install any kind of file, map, addon or mod to Quake 3 Arena. Pretty easy huh?

As an example:
1.- You download a mod you like
2.- You open the file
3.- You see a folder called "This is my mod Punk" (Example Mod File)
4.- You explore the folder and you see several files and .pk3 probably.
5.- If it is your first mod file you will be confused, but don't worry.
6.- Drag the mod folder and drop it into your Quake 3 Arena folder
7.- Start the game, then go to the "Mods" menu. Finally, select the mod from the list and load it.
8.- Play

All of the downloads for https://ioquake3.org/extras/models/ do not work. You can go to http://web.archive.org/web/20201019001802/https://ioquake3.org/extras/models/ and download them there.

lvlworld.com is a really cool site. Not only for Quake mods but also for OpenArena which is the one I started playing, after Quake 3 Arena, on 2006/07. So many interesting mods there.
