It is very easy to create mods for unity games. The C# library with the game algorithm is inside DigOrDie_Data/Managed/AssemblyCSharp.dll
Just create a new C# library with Visual Studio and create a reference to this dll and then you have access to all game classes and methods.
After creating the mod it can be injected with a mono assembly injector. There is an open source project with the same name that does the job.

And what you did is close to what I have in mind - about this area of world visible (not bigger, no options), this size on screen (top right I think), just with some fog of war otherwise it would be too easy :)
