Counterpart Release
Deja Vu?
Release date: Before July, turned out :)
Counterpart is an action puzzle game by Crush All Boxes.

You're a bot, zipping around a strange cyberspace world. Your goal is to touch the one other bot in this world that's just like you: your Counterpart. Use WASD and mouse (or arrows and mouse, or a controller: I'm hoping to pre-set-up the game for controller use, but if it's wrong you can reconfigure it and tell me where it went wrong), space to jump, left-shift or mouse to fire. E moves to the next level when you win, and Q reverses your jump if you need to get down quick.

What you're firing isn't bullets. It's talk packets, and if you hit a bot which has seen the bot like you, it'll fire another packet toward where it saw your counterpart last. It also beeps, and the pitch and style of the response tells you how different that bot is from you. But if the bot's too different from you, it may not even respond!

It starts out very easy, gets active and fun in a hurry, but as you advance through levels both the terrain and challenge escalate to test you and your computer to the limit! You can't just twitch your way to super-high scores, you have to plan and think while also racing your fastest to find your counterpart.

The game adapts to work with your play style and how hard you're pushing to win, from the first easy levels to the most impossible terrains. The visual style has been specially tuned to encode decently on YouTube despite the inherent challenges of a wireframe world aesthetic! And the sound draws on years of sound engineer experience: sometimes it's your ears that will give you a vital clue.

Hope you like it!

I hadn't seen the download link until now, and sadly, it looks like it's not working anymore.
If anyone has a download of this, I would appreciate being able to play one of the first greenlight games I was genuinely interested in.

The link seems to be down and I can't find anything online. How can I get my hands on this game? Can't wait to try it, reminds me of old DOS games you would find on those "100 great action arcade games" cd's

It took a while but I am good to my word: it is done and available for free to those few who wanted to see it. Tell your friends who also like this stuff :)

I'm not sure I can incorporate outside textures, especially since there's no chance of ever seeing any compensation for any of this. It's truly become a labor of love. What I CAN do is get my shit together for my next project (which runs a patreon) and then put it there as a PUBLIC thing and allow people to be patrons if they want (or if they want other game projects to come from me on the strength of the gameplay of this one).

I can't think of any other way to do it. Of course, the world is a very crappy place and may give me literally nothing whatever I do… but I do NOT have to refuse to give the world anything just because of that. Some of the best people are just as poor as me. Counterpart will end up available to play and enjoy, for everyone who wanted it and couldn't see it through Greenlight.

If you're not going to put it on steam, maybe Humble store? Or, have it bought from your website and it provides a steam key.

And another thing, could there be an easter egg where one/your counterpart is a texture from your computer?

Aw, that's a shame, really wanted to see this come through. Are you thinking of putting it on something else than steam?
Crush All Boxes  [author] Mar 7, 2016 @ 2:46pm
I did, and it turned out to be not a great move. There's a lot of new game mechanics, but this whole show might need to go somewhere else, I think Greenlight might be dead to me at this point. Fair enough I guess, it's kind of niche and the aesthetic is VERY niche.

Did you relaunch the project? If so, I didn't know that you would have to do so to change the price. Anyway, I am curious if anything new has been added?

Thank you :) I know Kongregate more as a key site for Flash animators! These days, YouTube is poisoned ground for them.
