Personal opinion
Even though I have purchased G2 on Steam (and maybe 4x retail) and I'm writing this guide on Steam, I would personally recommend to use the GoG version. I can't explain why but the GoG version always been smoother for me - less stutter, no savegame corruption problem, memory exception bug etc.
Basics
If you have Gothic 2 Gold Edition from Steam or any other edition and you want to it to work seamlessly on Win 7 or newer with mods you have to install System pack, it will bring high resolution support, audio support etc.

1. Install "GOTHIC2: Gold Edition"
2. Install Gothic2_fix-2.6.0.0-rev2.exe [dl1.worldofplayers.ru]
3. Install Gothic2_PlayerKit-2.8
4. Install Latest SystemPack [forum.worldofplayers.de]

Quicksave
This isn't visual tweak but it's pretty useful so how enable quick save / load in G2?

Go to your game directory, system folder and open Gothic.ini.
Then find useQuickSaveKeys=0 and change the zero to one: useQuickSaveKeys=1

Save it, load up the game and now you can use F5 for quicksave and F9 for quickload.

You mean L'Hiver mod basic version (prices at merchants are 0.25 value of item as i remember). It makes fights harder too but food restores health better than potions (because is for free and fried meat heals like 43% of your health). There is L'Hiver mod vanilla edition if you want only graphic changes.
