Crystal Control II is available now on!
Release date: May 27th, 2016
Crystal Control II is NOW AVAILABLE on![]

Crystal Control II is the follow up to our local multiplayer bullet hell game released in 2014!

The rules are simple:
  • Two players pilot their respective characters in a "shoot 'em up" style competition
  • Shooting the center crystals will "capture" them, turning them your character's color
  • Captured crystals will fire for you, creating more chaos for the opponent to navigate
  • First player to get hit by opposing fire loses!

We've taken the original Crystal Control to a handful of events focused on fighting games and other local multiplayer games and were blown away by the level of skill some players were able to muster in just a short period of time. At one particular tournament, the level of play that was happening during the final matches was awe-inspiring.

The original game struck the perfect balance of allowing casual players room to enjoy themselves and learn the game while still providing a deep and complex experience for more competitive players. We hope to maintain these qualities in the sequel while adding a ton of additional content.

You can play the original Crystal Control for free on![]

This sequel is built on largely the same core gameplay as the original, but with a wealth of new features:

8 Playable Characters
While the original game starred only two (mechanically identical) characters, Crystal Control II has 8 unique characters, each with his or her own unique movement speeds, bullet types, and special "Control" abilities (which can be activated after the player has captured majority crystals)!

4 Stages
Along with the classic crystal formation from the original, three all-new patterns will be included, requiring players to develop new strategies if they want to stay in control!

Story Mode
Want to fly solo? No problem! Take on four challenging bosses and hone your skills while learning more about your favorite characters.

Accessibility Options
We want as many players to enjoy Crystal Control II as possible! Colorblind mode is already implemented, and gamepad remapping is planned. Is there a specific feature that would make the game easier for you to play? Let us know!

And more?
We have too many great ideas to pack them all in before release, but we hope to update the game post-launch with more features (like Training and Tournament modes!) and more content (new characters and stages!) free of charge.

The current development build of Crystal Control II is fully playable with all 8 characters (and their unique stats/specials) fully implemented. We wanted to reach this stage as early as possible to allow ample time for playtesting and ensuring that all 8 characters are properly balanced and fun to play. Much of the remaining work is simply completing new art assets and character animations to ensure the final product is polished and easy on the eyes. Our art team has a history of creating quality work and meeting deadlines, so there are no concerns about getting the finished game in the players' hands in the very near future.

We launched an early build of the game on May 27th, 2016. You can purchase it via

Early adopters are able to purchase Crystal Control II for a discounted rate of $4.99, with the understanding that your experience is subject to change as character abilities are tweaked. We have not determined a final price for the game, but it will likely be a few dollars higher than the early access price.

Due to some known issues with our development engine, we're currently only planning a Windows release on Steam, but we hope to bring the game to Mac and Linux as soon as these issues are resolved.

Virtually Competent is a small team founded by Eric Neuhaus and Colin Greenhalgh in late 2013. In our time working together, we've released more than 10 games for free on, building up development experience and collaborating with other talented people (including musician Reid Turner, artist Alexis Bogue, and designer Michael Connolly).
