Listening to the Companion Cube
By Veteran fisher
Did you know that your favourite metal box makes noises? In this guide I will tell you almost all about it.

Finding the listening spot
In the Companion Cube chamber (Test Chamber 17), pick it up and bring it to this place:

Put it down and be quiet. You may notice that it occasionally makes sounds. Before you comment anything like "Gaym theoreh said thes alredy nub" , let me say this: The sounds it makes are not said by some human, but rather a machine. More proof:
This info can be found in the script folder: these are some of the sounds of a Headcrab canister/rocket. So yeah, I guess Valve added that so the cube would give you the sp00ks. If you're in a quiet chamber and hear all that, it would be creepy.

A Headcrab canister. They're fired like rockets, so I really don't know are they canisters or not.
What does all that technical stuff mean?
By all that they mean that the cube makes selected noises on every 4 seconds. It also changes pitch randomly between 70 and 90, where 100 is the default pitch. More specifically, it has a background sound looping everywhere, ambient/atmosphere/corridor2.wav , and a set of sounds:
  • ambient/levels/canals/headcrab_canister_ambient1.wav
  • ambient/levels/canals/headcrab_canister_ambient2.wav
  • ambient/levels/canals/headcrab_canister_ambient3.wav
  • ambient/levels/canals/headcrab_canister_ambient4.wav
For every 3-7 seconds, it chooses one of those sounds to be played on position 0, and the position 0 is the cube in this scenario.
Wait, it's over already?
No, it isn't. I'll be adding stuff to this guide whenever I have time, so this isn't the final version.

recently i came up with the idea that the cubes may have been used for early AI (GLaDOS mentions them being able to think in portal 2, and that there are a lot of them lying around), aditionally they can be "killed" (you get an achievement called "fraticide" for dropping the cube in the cube euthanizer) and they seem to have nothing that differentiates them from other cubes aside from how they look, and their name.
this is a bad theory but remember
THATS JUST A THEORY
A GAAAAAAME THORY
thanks for watching
