7 reasons to vote for Castaways
7 reasons to vote for Castaways

We have recently published a post on our blog to discuss 7 more reasons to vote for Castaways. We are really proud of what we've done so far and we're still working hard to make Castaways the best game we possibly can.

You can find the blog post here[].

In response to feedback and comments...

Oh joy, another Survival Game! No.

Yes we know. I have heard this a lot when I have been talking about the game. I fully appreciate that the Survival Genre is saturated with both incredibly good and incredibly bad games. Our intention isn't to add to that, but somewhat divert into our own sub-genre. We want to make an alternative game. We don't want you to play Castaways and compare it to other survival games. We are trying to make something that is extremely team friendly, flexible, replayable. We are trying to make a pick up and play game that you can leave for a month and when you return it’s as easy to play as the first time, except with additional content that we plan to consistently roll out as long as people want it.

We can achieve this, we're certain of it, but without support from those who would play it becomes extremely difficult. So have confidence in us, give us your support and we won’t let you down.

The graphics need improvement!

We know. We're well aware of it and our graphics are the thing that is behind the most at the moment. We don't plan to release anything we wouldn't want to play ourselves. Realistically, we're not going to get AAA graphics anytime soon. We have focused primarily on gameplay at the moment and that is pretty much complete. When everything is in place we'll be focusing more on overhauling all the graphics to create what we feel will be a great game.

A note on the graphics, we are aiming for a somewhat 'cartoony' feel. I personally love the style of Orcs Must Die and that is the level of the finished product that we are striving for and I would love to see for Castaways.

Hate the AI, it’s very static and so on...

I am impressed you were able to tell so much from the maybe 6 seconds worth of AI we showed you in the trailer. :P We are in the process overhauling all of the player models and animations and this has been on-going since before November 2015. We are making use of Motion Capture Technology to make animations as good as we possibly can.

This game shouldn't be on Steam Greenlight yet!

In hindsight, we may have come on a bit early, but then when I look at all the other games that are on Steam Greenlight, I think 8 out of every 10 games are on way too early and in most cases, the ideas shouldn't even make it onto Steam Concepts.

Perhaps we are a bit early. But I stand by our decision to move onto Steam Greenlight. We have so much to show you to prove that we belong here and in due course we will. We are in the process of wrapping up some content for a 'demo' which will be publicly released and then we can decide whether or not we belong on Steam Greenlight.

You should add Wilson to the Island!

You are not wrong.

To wrap up I would just like to thank you again for your support and comments, whether they were positive or negative, it means a lot that you took the time to write anything as it has all been taken as constructive criticism.

We will be releasing more information, footage, and screenshots over the coming weeks so we hope you follow us, vote yes and help us make Castaways a reality.

- The Monocool Team

Release date: 3rd quarter 2016
Castaways, the flagship game of Monocool interactive, is a first person survival game like no other! We have gone the extra mile to make Castaways completely different to other survival games you may have played or heard of, whether it be single player, co-op or online multiplayer.

Castaways will change how survival games are played by giving you, the player, the power to create your very own survival game. Choose your environment, choose your enemies, choose your objectives. Some people might be brave enough to put their survival skills to the test by playing it solo. Others might prefer to pick their team and play with friends or simply wait for a team to find them and make friends. With Castaways, you play exactly what you want, when you want, how you want.

About Castaways
  • Character Backstories - Every time you play a game of Castaways, you must pick the Backstory of your character. For every game you complete, you will receive experience for the current Backstory, which in turn will allow you to improve certain aspects of the current Backstory for future games. Each Backstory has a range of benefits, whether it be harvesting wood, catching fish or killing enemies. Each Backstory will also find certain aspects of being a Castaway easier than others.

  • Team Combinations – We have developed a system that allows over 1500 unique team compositions. When playing with others, each player can choose the same or different Backstory for their characters. Picking a variety of backstories will give your team a relatively balanced advantage when playing. If all players choose the same Backstory, you will gain access to incredible bonus skills and buffs which are only available by matching multiple of the same backstory. The more you match, the better this bonus becomes, but also reduces the versatility you might have as a team.

  • Survivor Rating - As you play you will level up and get points which you can put into a general tree that affects you as a survivor differently to your Backstory. As you improve your Survivor Rating you will find that you will be far more adept at surviving the situations you choose to put yourself in. Your survivor rating will improve your character regardless of which Backstory you choose to play with.

  • Game Modes – Each time you play Castaways you will be able to set what type of game mode you want to play which defines the method of winning or losing that game. Each Game Mode aims to test you and your team in a variety of different ways. Some may be more focused on the building and defensive side while others may force your team to take a very combat heavy approach. We strive to continually add new Game Modes to Castaways to ensure that you will never be bored and always have a new adventure waiting to be played.

  • Enemy Sets - Enemy Sets are one of the finer points of Castaways that sets it apart from all other games that fall under the same or similar genres. For every game of Castaways that you play, you get to choose which enemy set you will be playing against. Each Enemy Set will come with its own strengths, weaknesses and their own little quirks. Multiple Enemy Sets are already in development and include a cannibal tribe and dinosaurs, but we already have plenty of ideas planned out and intend the variety of enemies to be constantly expanding.

  • Base Planning and Building - Castaways gives you the tools to design, build and manage your camps as you please. Once you decide on where you want your buildings placed, your whole team can help out by constructing the building from the ground up. Certain backstories will allow the building of different and better structures. Other backstories will give perks to the actual building, planning and maintenance of your camps and its buildings. Once you’ve chosen what you want to build, it then comes down to your team to work together to manually build that building.

  • Personal and Team Inventory - Castaways has two types of inventory, personal and team. When exploring, it’s highly likely that you will find items to pick up and use. But what about when you return to camp and you don’t really need these items? They can be refined and deposited into a Storage Hut which not only improves how much they are worth, but gives the rest of your team access. These resources can then be used to improve your camp or build any items you or your team might need. There are far more benefits to working as a team as to not.

  • Make the Rules - Play the game you want to play - you are in control of everything. Pick how long your game lasts. Set rules for how decisions are made for building and creating. Even go as far as how long each day and night lasts. Castaways is about you creating your own adventure. The more difficult the adventure, the more experience you and your team will be awarded if you survive. The only catch to this is, the easier you make your game, the less experience you will be rewarded if you should complete your adventure!

We have so many more ideas that we are already working on including an extremely in depth survival system, lots of exciting combat mechanics and even making Castaways part of the Steam Workshop! So if you’d like to see what we can do, please go ahead and give us your Yes vote.

If you’re not fully convinced and want to know more or need questions answered, please feel free to post your questions below or get in touch with us on the different links below.
