Weekly Content Blog #50: Alpha Demo Information
Release date: Q2 2016
Do you remember your first 16-bit RPG? The one you played all night until you had to go to school exhausted the next day? That's what Something Classic is striving to re-create in its own special way.

With Shadows of Adam, we aim not just to evoke nostalgia for the classic 16-bit JRPGs we know and love, but also to progress the genre, providing an adventure that lives up to the legacy left behind by the classic games we love so dearly.

Tucked away from the outside world by the impenetrable haze of the Misty Woods, the village of Adam has mostly lived in peace since the days of the Wraith War. Magic, the dark power that fueled that war has vanished. But darkness is descending once more and Adam's legendary hero, Orazio, is no more. 10 years ago he left without explanation and never returned, leaving his son and adopted daughter to wrestle with the dark secret he left behind—a secret that must now be revealed if the children hope to save both Adam and their departed father, though its revelation could unhinge the world.

Combat in Shadows of Adam is geared to be fast, engaging, and FUN! We took the best ideas from our favorite old school games and cut the fat out.

No Random Encounters

Gone are the random battles of old! Instead we utilize on screen monster encounters. Monsters guard main paths, treasures and other areas you will traverse in your journey. This allows the player time to prepare before each battle. But beware, some monsters may decide to pop out of unexpected places when you least expect it!

AP System

AP (ability points) are the currency of all skills and magic in Shadows of Adam. Each hero has a fixed capacity of 100% AP for the entire game and their skills can often use over 40% of it at once. The strategy is found in the unique way it is restored. There are traditional items which can restore AP, but they are rare and not found in stores. Instead, AP is most often restored between each round of battle automatically and through defeating enemies. This allows a unique attrition system that encourages skill use and fast combat.

Each hero in Shadows of Adam gains access to a set of skills unique to him or her. Skills level up with the player and stay relevant throughout the entire game. No more learning 1000 copies of the same skill! Each skill will always serve a specific and useful purpose in combat. For instance, Asrael’s bread and butter Lightning spell does powerful damage to a single enemy, whereas Flare will do moderate damage to all enemies. Because of each character's specific skills they lend themselves to specific roles in battle, however…

Artifacts are powerful ancient relics whose origin is the Wraith World. Equipping these artifacts allows players to drastically alter a hero's combat potential. Some beef up stats, grant the user the ability to attack twice, steal HP from the enemy, alter AP restore values and much more! These are not found in stores and will only be found in dungeons, from monsters and other areas. Look for them on your journey!

Exploring should be exciting and fun! This is an adventure! We just say "No!" to plodding around dull, maze-like maps littered with random encounters. Instead, you'll climb, jump, and even fly through an interactive world crammed with details and secret rewards. This world is alive with writhing vines, jumping fish, and birds that scatter when you dash through their midst!

Dungeons will have their own unique exploration mechanics, similar to dungeons you might find in Zelda or similar adventure games. There will be some familiar JRPG puzzle mechanics; however, Shadows of Adam will offer unique twists. We've got tentacles and floating magical orbs and lots more! This is not a puzzle game that will baffle the casual gamer. Like baby bear's porridge the difficulty is tempered to be "juuust right."

I would love to see SoA officially translated into multiple languages. The trouble is we don't have any multilingual speakers on the team, nor do we have a budget for quality translations.

Agreed! Our in-game music system was not mature when we released the demo. All of the looping issues have been fixed since then, as far as I know :). Same with collision issues. We did quite a few QA passes on the game to eliminate as many issues as we possibly could.

Our engine does have Unicode support, and we have looked into localization in the past. The problem most independent developers have with localization is either a lack of manpower to do a proper polish pass on the localization or the lack of budgetary resources to do a quality translation. Depending on the sales we have, we will be willing to re-invest in the game post-release for further language support.

May I ask which language you would like to see us support?

This game looks pretty good, it's a shame that I didn't found their kickstarter earlier, is there a way to stay alert for more JRPGs like this?
The downside (as of the 99 % of all indie JRPG's released) is the lack of language support. Maybe, they planned to give more languages options after the 40k tier, who knows...

I just played the demo and I have to say I'm very impressed. My only critique is the music and certain samples (bonfire mostly) could loop more cleanly. I also found an area in the Tangle that was not blocked off and was able to walk to the right of the map where I shouldn't. :)

Other than that, fantastic demo. I can't wait for the full game.

@Travis Piss-Trana:

Our primary focus right now is getting the game complete and released on our targeted desktop platforms. Once that task is done we will see what we can do regarding ports.

Thanks for the compliment! We're definitely going to try our best :)
