A Huge Update
First preview article!
Release date: May 2016

In Membrain, you can build your own solutions to the puzzles. Need to cross a gap? Place down a Block or Launch node. Can’t quite reach that higher platform? Throw down a Jump node. Forcefield blocking your way? Teleport right through it after placing down a Blink node.

You’ll manipulate cubes, activate switches, and add to the levels themselves to solve each of the puzzles within the game. The titular world of the Membrain will fight back - altering levels as you play to prevent your progression and throwing some nasty defence mechanisms your way. Thankfully, you’ll have AANI on your side - your faithful companion, and effectively the second playable character - to edit the world and set things right.

This all plays out in real-time, with one key switching between platforming and level editing gameplay. It’s up to you to discover the quickest and most cost-friendly ways to complete the level - beware as you’re limited in your resources in each level.

- Edit levels while you play, to aid with platforming or solve puzzles.
- Several different types of world-altering nodes to utilise across 50 levels.
- Collectibles hidden throughout the Membrain to find.
- A colourful and mysterious virtual world as the backdrop for the story.
- Carefully manage resources and mechanics to find the solution in each level.
- Fully voice acted character of AANI, with further voice acting in other roles.
- Soundtrack from esteemed dance record producer Tuffcub.

All of the game's mechanics - known as nodes in the language of the game - can be placed anywhere in the level to assist you - providing you have enough resources. There are a few more mechanics, which you can't control, that you can discover in the full game!

Great for crossing gaps without hassle, and coupled with a low resource cost, the blue Basic Block can create a fully supported platform for Proto to stand on. The green Moving Block may cost a bit more of your resources, but moves back and forth in a direction of your choosing.

If you're feeling vertically challenged, the Jump node will quadruple the height of Proto's jump, allowing you to get to those previously out-of-reach platforms. It can even be used to make puzzle cubes ascend and plays a part in solving some of the game's trickier puzzles.

Perhaps the fastest way of getting around, the Launch node throws player or cubes across the Membrain. Choose your direction and chain these nodes together to cross large fractures in the world - with style!

Marvel as the ground changes its properties below you, turning into a trampoline-like material, allowing you to bounce up and down and all over the world. Chain Bounce nodes together, as well as with other nodes, to reach incredible heights.

When there's an obstacle in your way, or you feel like travelling faster than the speed of sound, then the Blink node is the only option, boosting you forward as huge speeds and allowing you to phase right through any pesky forcefields in your way.

Fly higher than ever before by powering yourself up with a Jet booster. Simply step on this pad after placing it down within the level and you'll be endowed with the ability to fly, for a short period of time of course.

Drop a Bridge down to create the most elegant and simple way of crossing a fracture within the Membrain. Alternatively, use the bridge's circuitry to carry power from one area to another, allowing you to place nodes in previously unavailable sections.

PROTO has been woken up, aware of the mysterious world of The Membrain around him. He has only one goal: escape. He's soon introduced to a chatty companion in the form of AANI - equally as mysterious as the world they're in but with a sense of gleeful and childlike wonder like PROTO has never seen.

These two characters will work together, as the player controls PROTO in first person movement and AANI when utilising the level-editing mode of the game, discovering the secrets of The Membrain - and of each other - as this strange maze begins to fight back, with enemies, traps, and some level editing of its own...

Reading and then watching the trailer makes me feel torn. I think there are some great ideas in here.

Just like so many other games that have come out after Portal, it's hard to live up to that. I'd say it has some potential, but it really needs to be WAY more polished than the trailer. Puzzles are great, but you have to have some truly great ambience to make them better... again, Portal. User made levels that are great puzzles get many more comments, votes, etc when someone redoes them in hammer or even BEEmod. Atmosphere.

Having so many things available, even though the player has a budget, makes it seem like you could truly "break" the puzzles. Granted, I have not, nor, seen how any of this works.

Bottom line. I am interested, but I'd have to playtest at least 30 minutes worth.

To expand... "editing levels while you play" is nothing new. Trine trilogy is a perfect example of doing that right. Story! Visuals! Puzzles! All checkmarks and that's including all the other things that go along with it.

Yes, I understand this is not a AAA game or anything, but I would just like to at least test it in whatever stage it's in and have more details of the vision of the game.
