Tips, tricks and cheats for beating 8-Bit Commando.
These are the default keyboard keys which can be customized by going to Options > Controls. Tip: Try the numeric pad when playing on a full keyboard
A / Z / Space
S / X / Left Ctrl
Move / Aim
Q / W / Left Shift
Start / Pause
Quit / Pause
Climb down from platform
Toggle full-screen mode
Note: Some keyboards fail to register more than two key presses at the same time. This is a hardware limitation, but fortunately there is a simple workaround. Try using the left "Control" key to shoot. Go to Options > Controls and make sure the “shoot” button is assigned to either the "Control" or "Shift" key.
Changing weapons can be done using the Q, W or Left Shift keys. You can also switch between available weapons from the pause screen.
Rate of fire
Slow to charge-up
Reflected by walls
Short-range defensive weapon
Bounces off walls and platforms
Not available in hard mode
Note: You'll need a long range weapon to get the secret power-ups. The regular machine gun should be well suited for the job.
Nuclear Threats Jump on top of the first platform right after the fence in the beginning. Once you are on top of the platform, keep jumping and shooting upward. If your weapon has enough range, the power-up will literally drop from the sky. The Reactor The secret power-up is located right after the two hovercraft, before the last checkpoint. Jump between the two platforms and shoot upward in the gap on the ceiling. Train Ride This power-up is hidden right before the boss. Get to the wagon that has flames coming out of it. Stand in the gap between the flames and jump and shoot upward. Mountain Hideout The power-up on this level is located before the last checkpoint. There is a series of falling spike traps with an enemy shooting at you from above. You need to shoot the enemy and get on the platform he was standing on. It may be tricky to reach that platform as you may take a hit or two from the spikes. Once you are on top of the platform, jump and shoot upward. Showdown This secret power-up is located around the middle of the level near the two large containers that drop when you walk under. You need to wait for the left container to drop, then get on top of it. Jump to the platform on the left of the container and shoot upward.
Hard mode unlocks once you complete the game and gives you exclusive access to a new set of leaderboards.

Frequently asked questions
How do you disable the "analog" effects? The analog filters are optional and can be disabled by going to Options > Video > Filter. If you prefer looking at crisp pixel art, decrease the filter to 0%. How do I start a coop/versus game? You must have at least two controllers plugged in before you boot up the game. The coop feature works with either a keyboard and one gamepad or two gamepads. Go to Options > Controls to make sure that your controllers are configured properly.
How do you remove the borders around the screen? Playing on widescreen resolutions allows you to see more of the level. However, this may result in borders around the screen. To remove the borders, you need to enable "stretching" by going to Options > Video.
Why does the gameplay feel slow? Playing on widescreen resolutions "feels" slower since it will take longer for your character to move from one end of the screen to the other. Please try to decrease the game's resolution by going to Options > Video.
How do you beat the fifth mission? If you are stuck on a particular mission, you can enable the "invincibility cheat". Simply open the title screen and press: ↑ ↓ ↑ ↓ ← ← → →
Is this game really 8-bit? 8-Bit Commando was built using modern technology, but designed to look retro - similar to the 8-bit and 16-bit consoles from the classic era of gaming.
How can I reset my game settings? In the rare event that the game fails to boot up, you may need to reset your local settings. The following method will reset the settings without affecting your game progress: 1. Press the Windows key+R. 2. Type in “cmd” and press enter to open the windows console. 3. Enter the following command (you may need to modify the first part, depending on the Steam client installation path):
Once you have reset your settings the game should boot up automatically. Please restart the game a second time through the Steam client. Note that Steam Cloud does not backup your game settings, just your progress.
Is this game better than Contra? This game has no affiliation with Konami's classic series. 8-Bit Commando is a retro-themed run-and-gun game, developed independently. Please try the free demo here: http://store.steampowered.com/app/456000/
