About the tutorial
Welcome to the “Learning Cargo in 10 minutes” tutorial. The tutorial will explain basic facts that will help you learn cargo transportation in train fever, without having to read lengthy manuals. However, I have not included hard core strategies and calculations. I have also not covered up revenue and expenses calculations. Moreover, I assume that you are familiar with the game interface and are able to find industries and discover supply chains using the game interface. So let’s get started
Cargo Behaviour, Demand and Supply
Each unit of cargo has 20 minutes to reach its destination. If you build a line that takes more than 20 minutes then industries will not use your line. One thing to note is that the 20 minute time limit also includes the time taken by the cargo to travel from industry to your station and the waiting time of cargo at the station. So even if your line frequency is 20 minutes, you will start losing cargo at station and in the vehicle, if the waiting time is high.

Demand and supply
Demand and supply of cargo in train fever works differently than other similar Sims. The production of the entire chain is based on the demand of the cities which it is serving. Let’s assume that you have setup a Forest->Sawmill->City chain. If the demand in the city is 30 units in a year, than sawmill will produce maximum of 30 units of goods in a year. Similarly the Forest will also produce no more than 30 units of wood (because there is a demand of 30 units of wood at sawmill).
If demand increases in a city, or you start to service more cities, the production in the entire supply chain starts to increase. The production increases by 1 unit per month. Note: In build 7753, rate of increase of production has been increased to 2 units per month.

If you fail to fullfill the demand of an industry or if you fail to deliver the required amount of goods produced, to a city, then the production at the entire supply chain will start to decrease. But decrease in the production is more rapid than increase. So you should be careful and monitor your chain setup regularly.

Industries Behaviour and supply/demand per minute
If you click an industry, a window pop ups showing the production. So what this production value denotes: It is actually the production per year. In the picture below, the current production per year is 53 and the maximum limit is 100. If the current production reaches the limit production, the industry will upgrade to a higher level thereby increasing the maximum reachable production. The maximum reachable production is 400 by default.



Production and Demand in Minutes
Since the frequency of a vehicle is shown in minutes and seconds, it is important to be able to convert the production in terms of minutes. To convert the production to “production per minute”, we divide it by 12 if you want to know how, then here it is: A day in normal game speed is 2 seconds. So a year is 365x2 seconds, which is equal to 12.166 minutes or roughly 12 minutes.
In the above picture, production per minute is 53/12 or roughly 4.4 units per minute. Similarly, if the demand in a city is 53 units than the demand per minute is 4.4 units. We will use this theory later.
Cargo and Frequency
Frequency simply shows the time in seconds or minutes in which a vehicles arrives on each stop. E.g. if frequency of a line is 1 minute, then it means that a vehicle will arrive every minute on each stop. To calculate frequency, simply run a single desired vehicle in the line and wait for a while. Frequency is important in serving cargo because it will aid you in determine whether your cargo will reach its destination in less than 20 minutes or not. It is also useful in deciding how many vehicles you should run on your line.

Frequency and the Waiting time
Frequency value directly denotes the maximum time your cargo will have to wait at the station after which it will be picked up. E.g. If frequency is 2 minutes then any cargo’s maximum waiting time at the station is 2 minutes.

Frequency and the Total travel time
With the help of frequency, you will be able to determine the total time your vehicles takes to travel between the industries. Total travel time (time taken to reach the destination and return) is number of vehicles multiplied by frequency. Since this time is of the journey both back and forth, you can estimate that Time taken to reach destination is approximately half the total travel time, which means your vehicle takes (number of vehicles*frequency)/2 minutes to reach its destination.
So if frequency with one vehicle is 10 minutes. Then the maximum time taken by cargo to reach its destination is waiting time (10) plus journey time (5 minutes) plus extra 2 minutes for cargo to travel between industries and station. That is equal to 10+5+2=17 minutes. Since time is 17 minutes which is less than 20, you can successfully run a single vehicle on this line without losing cargo.

Frequency and Number of vehicles
Frequency can be used to decide how many trucks a line should have or how many wagons a train should have. We will learn about it later
Seting up a line (Putting it all together)
Following are the crucial steps of setting up a successful line.
  • Find a supply chain: of course it’s very easy
  • Decide the Line capacity: decide the maximum amount of goods your lines can transport
  • Implement the Target Line capacity: make use of facts to implement the targeted line capacity.

Deciding in capacity
Line capacity is the maximum amount of cargo that your line can transport. If industries start producing more than your line capacity, you will need to increase your line capacity otherwise the production will start to decrease, unless there is a walking distance between the industries.
So what should be our line capacity for a supply chain? It could be the current demand of a city you want to serve or it could be the production limit of your industry. It’s up to you decide but remember that higher line capacity means higher running costs. Production increases by 2 unit per month, so it will take a long time for the supply chain to reach the line capacity. On the other hand, the plus point of setting a higher line capacity is that you will not need to monitor your line for a long time. So it all depends upon your style of playing

How to implement the require line capacity
Now here the all the facts come into matter. Implementing the required line capacity involves setting up a desired number of vehicles in a line.
Let’s assume that a city’s demand is 36 units and you want your line capacity to be 36. So this is how you decided how many vehicles you should run on your line. The following examples illustrate ways to decide by rail and then by road.

We want our line to supply 36 units in a year or 36 units in 12 minutes, which is equal to 36/12=3 units in a minute.

For trains
First we determine the frequency of the train. Let’s assume than a single train’s on that line has frequency of 5 mins. On the other hand our demand per minute is 3. Because the train will arrive every 5 mins, our train should carry at least 3*5=15 units in order to meet the demand. If we run 2 trains then each train should carry 7.5 or 8 units. So the formula is
(Train Capacity=Target capacity per minute*frequency/number of trains)

For Road vehicles
Calculations with road vehicles works slightly in a different way because they have fixed capacity. Let us assume that frequency with a single truck is 8 minutes and its capacity is 5 units. According to this assumption, the truck will deliver 5 units in 8 minutes. So its capacity to supply per minute is 5/8=0.625 units per minute. On the other hand demand per minute is 3 units. Therefore, the number of trucks required for that line is equal to 3/0.625=4.8 trucks or 5 trucks. Formula is
Number of trucks=Demand per minute/[truck capacity/(frequency*number of trucks)]

Useful guide. With the quality of the guides in this Train Fever Steam Guides area, and some videos like Monterico's, I find it hard to believe this game is not more popular. Didn't even know it was this sort of game. But after a whole day or studying all this (enjoying doing so), I'm definitely getting this next time it is on sale, especially if it is $5 or less. Thanks for the guide.

For people having issues with cargo trucks, it took me awhile till I realised you need to specify which cargo each truck will cary. There is a symbol on the truck, which defaults to coal. Easily changed in the depot by clicking on the symbol. Also make sure the auto replacement settings repalces the trucks with the same cargo type.
