Expect the Augusta National golf course to bare its teeth for the second round on Friday.

The committee will be happy enough that Jordan Spieth flirted with the course record with an eight-under 64. And that Australia's Jason Day had five birdies in a row from the 12th to launch his challenge and be one of four players tied for second at five under par.

But they won't let the course be torn up two days in a row. The players are expecting firmer greens and tougher pin positions.

"It was playing probably the easiest I can imagine it playing this week," said Australian Open champion Spieth after his round of nine birdies and a bogey at 15.

"I know saying that is probably going to be really bad for me, but the course was as gettable as I think it will be this week. To make nine birdies out here, you know, that's a dreamy round for me. I think this goes down as one of the best rounds I've played."

Day and Tiger Woods, returning after a nine-week absence with a respectable 73, both expected the course to toughen up. "The greens will get a little bit faster and harder," said Day. "You have to play more conservative so the birdies are harder to come by."

Woods, who said he was still in with a chance despite being nine shots behind, joked: "You know how they like to change things every now and then."

Day said his round was kickstarted by a bogey on the 11th. "I hit a good putt (on 11) and it lipped out. So, I was kind of peeved about that. And in my mind I was just thinking my bounce back stats have been pretty good this year. I didn't realise I was going to rattle off five in a row!"

But the world No.5 has no illusion about the task ahead. "I've got to chase a guy who's really killing it right now. Jordan's playing phenomenal golf. That stretch of golf that he's played over the last 11, 12 events, is just amazing. And I think everyone knows that he's the one to beat."

Spieth fell one short of the course record following a bogey on 15, while Day fell back with a bogey at 17 that put him in a share of second with Ernie Els, Justin Rose and Charley Hoffman.

It was a good day for other former champions besides Els, highlighted by 65-year-old Tom Watson who became the oldest player to record an under par round at the Masters with his 71. Phil Mickelson was in the mix with a 70 while defending champion Bubba Watson said he was tired after his 71 took well over five hours to complete.

World No.1 Rory McIlroy, who is chasing a career grand slam, also started with a 71.

John Senden was the next-best Australian at one under in a tie for 18th, while 2013 Masters champion Adam Scott shot an even-par 72 to be 31st. Geoff Ogilvy (74) and amateur Antonio Murdaca (78) round out the Australian tilt.

Scott couldn't hide his disappointment after a poor finish to his first round.

"It was OK," said Scott. "It was a sloppy finish with bogeys at 16 and 18 where I couldn't scramble when slightly out of position.

"It was a little disappointing as I'd have been chuffed if I'd walked off with two under when not playing my best, not playing my worst.

"I didn't give myself many chances until the back nine. To not birdie 15 just turned things to finish the wrong way. It would have been nice to birdie 15 from where I was and then you make an easy par on 16 and things finish nicely."

Much has been made of Scott's return to the broomstick putter that he used when winning here in 2013, but he looked solid on the greens all day. "The putter was good. Very good."

Scott would not buy into suggestions he needed a low second round to put his mark on the tournament.
