The Arkansas Derby takes center stage on Saturday as the last major Kentucky Derby prep race. While the winner and second-place finisher are guaranteed a spot in the starting gate on the first Saturday in May, they could be at a disadvantage heading into the Derby off only three weeks of rest.

The $1 million Grade I Arkansas Derby is run at 1 1/8 miles (nine furlongs) at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark. A trying type, who has run against graded stakes competition in his last five starts, The Truth or Else has yet to string together two good races. His lifetime top from a Pace Figure perspective barely eclipses 70, which puts him at a huge disadvantage.

A heavily-campaigned 3-year-old trained by D. Wayne Lukas, Mr. Z began his racing career in June 2014 and has already raced 11 times. He’s made over $550,000 and has hit the board in eight of his 11 starts, but only once has he gotten his picture taken in the winners circle. There is a long line of bettors who have backed Mr. Z to win and lost, given his heavily-backed odds in his last five starts.

He looks to have actually peaked late in his 2-year-old career with a 78 final figure, but it has been a clear regression line down to his most recent 65.

Greatly improved in his last race, Bridget’s Big Luvy takes the big step up to Grade I competition. And while his last effort was a big step up to a lifetime top of 71.4 final pace figure, it is unlikely he can repeat, let alone move forward off that figure.

After a successful jump into graded-stakes competition, Madefromlucky takes on American Pharoah again, who beat him handily last out in the Grade II Rebel Stakes. That being said, there are a few interesting angles to like. He makes his third start for top trainer Todd Pletcher, big-game rider John Velazquez stays aboard and he is coming off 28 days rest, perfectly spaced. His half sister, A Shin Gold (by Medaglia D’oro) was a very good racehorse in Japan, winning almost $1 million including the Japan Dirt.
