In Las Vegas, the Wynn sportsbook, which opened Duke -5.5, took action on the underdog Spartans and dropped to -5. But according to John Avello, director of race and sports at the Wynn Las Vegas, that isn’t where this spread will close come game day.

“I can see this getting pushed back to (Duke) -5.5, despite that early Michigan State money we took,” Avello tells Covers. “All that money is coming back plus some. I won’t be surprised if this one closes 5.5 or higher.”

Avello says the fact that Michigan State has exceeded expectations in this year’s tournament already, and lost to Duke back in November, will have the betting public coming in on the Blue Devils to end Tom Izzo’s “Team of Destiny”. It’s a similar sentiment with CG Technology, which operates a number of Las Vegas sportsbooks, including the Cosmopolitan, M Resort and Venetian.

“Right, now we’re actually cheering for Duke, since we took some Michigan State money,” Jason Simbal, vice president of race and sports for CG Technology, tells Covers. “The betting is pretty even and right now, we need Duke for a smaller winner. But with the crowds coming in this weekend, I think that’s going to change quickly. I think, for sure, we have Duke money coming in on game day and we’ll need Michigan State.”

Online, the early action on the Spartans didn’t show up. According to Peter Childs, an oddsmaker with Sportsbook.ag, they opened the Blue Devils as 4.5-point favorites and were steamrolled by action on Duke, tacking an extra half point on the line before any interest in MSU showed up.

“Duke so far has been the team that has hurt us the most in the tournament, with bettors backing them in all four of their games and Duke covering all four games,” Childs tells Covers. “So it’s no wonder they’re betting them again here, and I regret opening at 4.5 when I should have known better that the public would hammer Duke again.”

At the original spread of -4.5, 90 percent of bets were on Duke. But since moving to -5, only 65 percent of the action is on the Blue Devils. Childs expects that line to creep to -5.5 with more money on the favorite on the way this weekend.

Fellow online sportsbook, Bookmaker.eu, has also seen one-sided money on Duke and is bracing for a rush of action as Saturday draws closer – even with Michigan State stunning their way to the Final Four.

“While there is a contingent siding with the Cinderella Spartans, when it comes down to it we think the majority will be on Duke,” John Lester of Bookmaker.eu, tells Covers. “I think this closes at -6.”
