Civ 5-How the AI behaves-Tips and tricks to deal with them
By BortyTheBort and 2 collaborators
This guide will teach you how the AI behaves (in my experience) if something seems off then tell me
THIS WILL HAVE MORE ADDED ON IN THE FUTURE, I'M STILL DOING A BIT OF RESEARCH ON SOME CIVS

If you have some info on some civs, listed or not listed I will be eternally grateful
Sidenotes: I may make this a series of guides for different games, as this seems to be kinda popular
If you have a MOD Civ you want me to look at post it in the comments below!

India (Gandhi)
(Changed due to comments section saying otherwise)

Friendly enough, doesn`t get too close but he's generally harmless in the early game, now when you get to the late game, things play out a little differently...TRIP DOWN STORY LANE, the developers of the old Civilization games tried to make Gandhi never make nuclear weaponry, but due to the games code, the personality system did a little ♥♥♥♥-up and Gandhi would ALWAYS make nuclear weapons and use them, the devs thought this was so hilarious (and it is hilarious). So, they left it in the game's code (and put it in deliberately) for many Civilization games to come. So now Gandhi will nuke you whenever he gets the chance.

How to deal with them

Building Bomb Shelters will help you a lot, and having a massive army *may* steer Ghandi away from thinking about nuking you. But nevertheless, it's always a good idea to take him out or make the nuclear non-proliferation act before he can do his work. [DLC]
Sweden (Gustavus Adolphus)
Gustavus is like a peacekeeper, he always fights the warmongerers first. He also has a tendency to go for large empires and leave the small ones alone,so if you adopted Liberty as a social policy good luck. Sweden tends to be very friendly to small empires

How to deal with them
Try your best to get on Sweden's good side, he's a very reliable ally to fight for you, especially if your small. He can become a great ally, and would be willing to fight warmongers alongside you.
Huns (Attila)
If there is anything more murderous than Gandhi it`s this guy, he WILL screw you. He often doesn`t care who he trys to kill, even if their bigger than him and he`s a REALLY reckless civilization to play against, but strangely he can be a useful ally if you can make him one.

How to deal with him

Try and get allies, try sharing intrigue and giving generous deals to get in his good books, but if that doesnt work pray for Sweden, because he will come down on you like a ton of bricks. Without sweaden, try building a large military to help steer off invasion, or if it's not big enough, build a bigger one try to get a city and ask for peace.
Venice(Enrico Dandolo)
(Changed due to comments saying Venice aggressive)

PIECE OF CRAP, declares war on everyone likely due to jealousy. Example, if you're bigger then he will hate you. He is a very rich civilization (usually) and neutral with everybody. He often doesn`t build a big army until mercenaries start coming into the game, so if he does declare war on you, just use your superior tech to kill him (because he gets jealous of your bigger cities). He will try to get delegates and will tend to make proposals you don`t want.

How to deal with him

Venice isn`t much of a problem normally ,he tends to declare war if hes only after asking for trade deals and if you want their lands do it before or after the Landersknects are in the game, because many a time I have seen Enrico spam them out and it's absolutely infuriating. You could just take his only city, too (That's if).
Morocco (Ahmed Al-Mansur)
Morocco is a strict merchant filled land of hapiness and laughter, so trading isn`t really a problem, but contrary to Venice they have a MASSIVE ARMY, due to his desert bias (don`t ask) and he will defend his land, seriously he is easily one of the most defensive civs in the game.

How to deal with them

Don`t bother attacking Morocco ,because they are often not worth attacking because of their massive army, and it just isn`t worth it. Stay a friend. Stay alive. For now.
The Iroquois (Hiawatha)
The Iroquois are a strange one, they are kind of a flip-flop civ, as in they keep changing their ideas. He is unpredictable as far as I've played and I am yet to see any kind of pattern. Hiawatha is also a big expansionist, so look out for long wars and.. wait where's his city?

How to deal with them

It's up to how they play in your eyes. Are they trading? Are they ♥♥♥♥♥♥ and pillaging? Up to you what to do for this one.

EDIT FROM A LITTLE MORE GAME TIME
The Iroquois will surround you with cities and then when the time is right,he declares war and swarms on in,this seems to be a little tactic Hiawatha has developed
America(Washington)
In this game America is a group of devious and sneaky ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥s,and they expand alot (You might notice alot of AI civs like to expand) but the thing with America is they lie about everything "Hey,I won`t send any more spies! I promise!" *one turn later* "Wow how did that get there! Amazing!" It`s difficult to declare war against him too as he tends to gather alot of allies and friends

How to deal with him

Build up constabularies, spy networks as best as you can in your abilities,or try to take him out in the early game to avoid him becoming a nuisance
The Netherlands(William of Orange)
THIS GUY IS SO ♥♥♥♥ING ANNOYING, he's the biggest expansionist in the game by far, Mr.William McFat♥♥♥♥ does not stop expanding until his empire is the size of John Cena`s swollen big massive head, and that`s exactly what William has, he is very hard to scare, and is kind of cocky and he will be demanding when it comes to trade deals. He is also a wonder hoarder so another element is added to his annoying....ness

How to deal with them

WAR, look let`s face it, if he gets ONE more wonder ahead of you, your gonna go insane, so it`s probably for the best if you take him out quickly, and take his wonders for yourself THAT YOU RIGHTLY DESERVE. Damn right.

William being cocky may be incorrect information.
Mongolia(Genghis Khan)
Genghis Khan is by far,the most taxing leader to fight in the game,he fights city states regardless of the pledges of protection, and I have had to pay him over and over to stop him killing them. He doesn`t have any desire to expand with settlers,he instead attacks city states and adds them to his empire. He is either a very friendly guy,or a ♥♥♥♥,he`s like Seth MacFarlane

How to deal with them

If your not going for a diplomatic victory through city states, leave him(unless he comes for you),but if you ARE going for a diplomatic victory and don`t have the military, your gonna have to cough up the money(annoying but true)or attack
China(Wu Zetian)
Wu Zetian is like a friendly warmongerer, she maintains friendly diplomatic relations with most civs, but singles out others for no reason and takes out the singled-out civ, like in a game I had,China was friendly with everyone except Austria, and China did everything in their power to screw them over and eventually China got everyone to declare war on Austria except me(I was playing as Korea,I did denounce though,so I could get in everyones good books)

How to deal with her

Build an army if your singled out,if your not singled out, roll with it and just do what she does
Korea(Sejong)
Korea is the most annoying civilisation in the game as he will do everything in his power to **** off EVERYONE,friend or no friend. For example, everyone has the Freedom Ideology,so Korea will pick to make Autocracy as a World Ideology in the UN,they are basically the trolls of Civ 5,but they are friendly(counts for **** XD)

How to deal with them

Block them to every diplomatic Wonder in the game(especially the Forbidden Palace)and try everything in your power to stop him becoming the host,or he will screw the world,so just to bring peace to the world. Stop. Korea. From. UN.

Note:Steam broke the censor system so I had to fix it :P
France(Napoleon)
Napoleon often avoids diplomacy, and is quiet, has a few warmongering traits(not that much)but he will stick with you as a friend,a very reliable ally to have if your going to go to war with somebody

How to deal with them

Be friendly to him, don`t expect him to send you any "friend requests" Just be friendly as his warmongering traits might be unleashed upon you
England(Elizabeth)
Elizabeth is the queen of the sea, making her practically unbeatable on island maps, and she will ♥♥♥♥ you up if you come for her,her navy tends to be unchallenged by any other civ in the game, and she`s a ♥♥♥♥♥ to fight in the congress,as she tries her best to make city-state allies(she`s coded to go for diplomatic victories)

How to deal with her

If she is the queen of the sea,you have to become the king/queen of the land, build cannons and trebuchets to take out her Ships of the Line.Unfortunately I have yet to find any proper quick solution to the Longbowman apart from Korea`s special unit the Hwach`a.In diplomacy, try to ♥♥♥♥-block her as much as possible, never declare friendship as that just stops you from fighting her in any wars, meaning you have no chance if she is on her way to diplomatic victory

Japan(Oda Nobunaga)
Japan focus on building settlements tall, they prefer to build in small plots of land rather than sprawl like William of Orange, they are on occasion war-like(well,slightly more than on occasion) They are VERY diplomatic, and will do deals with other civs to get a clever pincer movement on the enemy, and they are actually quite helpful allies. Sometimes Japan goes towards faith and this is likely to boost their diplomatic leverage

How to deal with him

Get more friends than him,try and spread religion faster than him if he has one,and remember that he builds tall,so taking a 10+ population city is likely FILLED with buildings
The Ottomans(Suleiman)
This civilisation as far as I have seen is driven by menstrual rage, they whine about the tiniest of things and will get ♥♥♥♥♥♥ if you try to stop them to anything, even if you beat him to a barbarian encampment. Diplomacy is common with this guy,but his deals are practically demands, and if you try to beat him at a single vote, don`t be surprised by the gathering of machine guns assembling outside your capital in about 3 turns.Their empire is perhaps the most depressed, due to their uber expansion policies,so perhaps you could wait until his people are sad if you want any military actions

How to deal with them

Go to war,and try to get superior science,as the Ottomans are normally slow on the tech front.
Apart from there is virtually no other other way I have found to beat him peacefully,I beat him with a massive swarm, once,of about 12 Landersknects as Venice due to my massive economy
Songhai(Askia)
KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,TRADE,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL(He can be quite a backstabber, one time we were at peace, perfectly happy, then he declared war on me, FOR NO GOOD REASON)

How to deal with them

KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL,KILL(Try to build up an army, an alliance, or both. He never really got to my cities, but better safe than sorry, OR go to advanced setup in single player and put him on your team(Before starting the server). Now you have two new ways (That will work better that the first way-killkillkillkill) to beat him or gain his trust.)
DLC Civilizations
DLC DLC DLC DLC DLC DLC
DLC Civilizations below (I just wanted to clarify)
Babylon (Nebuchadnezzar II)
Babylon is one of the best civilizations to play WITH. When he's in your game, it's different. With his powerful Walls of Babylon, it's harder to kill him because they provide a bigger damage output for the city, and more hit points than regular walls. Being so defencive because of this, he generally won't attack you. Though good luck beating him in technologies, because he's most likely to build Academys for days, boosting his science a lot especially early game.

How to deal with them
Don't attack early game. Then you can destroy him with your WW1- grade weaponry against his Fighter Jets, his information technology, and his defencive playstyle.

To be serious, try not to attack him, and be on his good side. He is a defencive civilization, afterall.
BONUS SECTION: Mod Civilizations
I am playing with mods a little and I realised the mod civilizations have personalities too so...yeah

Cerberus Civilisation(Illusive Man)

Very dependent on their spies, uses them efficiently however, and this can become annoying at times, especially when hes taking your nanotech like a ♥♥♥♥♥.

How to deal with them

Get them before the late game, because when it gets to then they become a pain in the ♥♥♥ ,so hurry up them catapults

The Virtucon Corporation (Dr.Evil)

Probably one of the funniest mods out there, Dr.Evil is a surprisingly friendly guy, but suddenly turns into a backstabber when nukes become a thing (he plays upon his ability to hoard gold) and he very quickly can turn a fun game into a mosh pit, occasionally propelling the world into war, like a real Dr.Evil should.

How to deal with them

Form alliances with other civs, to stop the war that often comes with him simply being there, he's like a souped-up Gandhi, so you should prepare with your other allies for the storm and try to take him out before the storm hits the windmill....or the fan, depends which one you prefer.

Also one of the funnest,as you feel like a real Dr.Evil when you play

The Soviet Union(Stalin)

Endless war, these guys WILL NOT STOP at trying to kill you, they have a raging blood-lust and desperately want to kill you. They bee-line towards cities with a wonder or two in them and capitals will get zerg-rushed

How to deal with them

Fairly easy to deal with actually, but it costs money. A lot of money, because you may have to bribe him to not kill you, or at least to attack someone else. The alternative is to build an alliance to destroy him before anything more happens

IMPORTANT NOTICE!!
I am probably not going to continue this guide,I`ve sort of gotten bored of Civilisation, and I haven`t booted it up in ages,so I haven`t really learnt much else, and anyways,I`m quite frankly, the alpha slacker,so if anyone wants to take the guide and finish it I will be willing to add you as a contributor and let you do the rest of the job.

You can do whatever the hell you want with it,just don`t completely stray from the core idea.
I won`t even object if you remove large amounts of text and replace it,it`s mostly pretty terrible content in the first place, and it kinda needs an overhaul.

And preferably,a more experienced player than myself to take a crack at it.
BUT,the only rule is that your not allowed to use the actual game code of the civilisations to describe what they play like, similar to how I was writing.

If you`re still interested, message me and I`ll just add you to the contributor list.

Thanks in advance.

UPDATED

I have managed to get someone to do the guide, however I want it to have as many contributors as possible. I would like this to become a group effort, and the more the merrier,so please, feel free to join up and help out.

Thanks in advance.

Again.

Something I noticed with Attila is that even while he was friendly torwards me, he was still plotting against me, I had one civ come to me and tell me that, and then I found out with my own spy.

I hate Attila's guts.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions! Just so you know, I'm mainly going to be putting what you guys say into the text, and if I respond to your comments/suggestions/questions it'll be either (gonna use Borty and 24 as examples) @BortyTheBort or +24. All suggestions are very welcome, and I thank you for them. Oh, and one last thing. All spelling needs to be correct because I'm not good at telling what misspelled words are. (sorry if I'm a bit of a hypocrite)

If you realise a civ is missing, please let me, the author, or the other contributor know, and we will work on gathering info.
Thanks!

after nuclear cleansing found a thousand year reich and bore the shit out of yourself for 1000 moar turns then you have officially completed the final solution
FlyingOktober Jul 20, 2016 @ 5:26pm
in case of 1v1 with attila be germany, get super rich, have much more tech do not meet him till late game so he can only steal obsolete tech then go to his lands (he will have huge ancient era army) so just arty bomb him with ranged late game ships and when the time comes purge the world in nuclear fire in the year 2077 and hope for the best to come
sensha Jul 18, 2016 @ 9:13pm
ramkhamtrollface i mean ramkhamhang is very aggressive in his settling and hes a little bish, he forward settles you every game because he always spawns next to you, then he complains about you forward settling him and attacks you.

how to deal: archer up and let him waiste two armies on you, then purge the world of his plague.
