Project Torment is a third-person psychological horror game featuring a strong narrative surrounding a man named David as he searches for his wife and son after a brutal accident. Torment is being developed by Subject Matter Games using Unity 5.

Game Introduction
The following is taken from an early in-house game outline document:

The camera fades in and out to a blurry scene, someone hazily opening their eyes. As the scene comes into focus you see a prescription bottle standing on a forest floor. Behind it, glass and other debris litter the ground, and further back a rapidly burning fire engulfs a car. A middle aged man (David) stands up, holding his head. Unaware of where he is, or how he and the car got there, David searches the crash site before heading into the woods to find help.

Planned Features
  • Focused single player narrative telling an engrossing and dramatic story
  • Fully voice acted, including cutscenes developed using body and facial motion capture
  • Multiple levels designed in both linear and open play styles
  • Combat system with multiple weapons
  • Gameplay featuring use of items with both positive and negative effects on the characters
  • Terrifying ambient audio and music creating a tense horror atmosphere

Note: Screenshots and demo video are taken from an early pre-alpha graphical demo. As such, these screens and video are only representative of the proof of concept for this game and may not reflect the final product. This pre-alpha was done to show this project could be attempted by our team and the final product will include more polished graphics and gameplay.

Things You WILL NOT Do In Project Torment
  • Run through half built levels picking up arbitrary papers whilst being chased
  • Be scared by unfair and cheap jump scares (scares, even jump ones, will need to make sense)
  • Encounter enemies that are undefeatable

Our Goal
Our goal with this Steam Concept page is to provide early information on our next project and build a community that looks forward to the final product. Updates will be constantly be provided through our various social media channels (see below), however the game is still in pre-production with full production set to begin in the next few weeks so updates will come as practically possible (we don't want to spoil the story or share too much before the finished product is out).

Project Torment is currently being built for a PC release. We will consider other options in the future.

Heyl_To_The_King: Absolutely, we plan on focusing on the depth of the story and the tension to build a sense of fear. We may use jump scares here and there, but we'll use them less often and to enhance the tension in the game.

They are great games to draw inspiration from, some more horror games with more depth less jump scares all the time would be really refreshing :) I wish you luck with this project and shall keep an eye out for any announcements can't wait to see how this goes xD

Heyl_To_The_King: Thanks! Silent Hil is a big inspiration behind this project, particularly the first three titles in the series. We would like to design something just as impactful as those games with some new modern twists on traditional horror gameplay.
