What Can You Do For Free?
By Hermit
Since FGVTT went free some days ago, people were asking what can be done with it for completely free? So I decided to write a guide for newcomers to enjoy the vtt by either not paying a single dime or only spending $1 on The Forge.

Of course, you can't have the luxury of having entire official modules and the extensive automation they provide, but you can do a lot of things with it; ranging from running free encounters and one-shots, to worldbuilding and map prep, to solo play...

This guide is my New Year gift to the lovely community.

Welcome to Thrifty's Guide to free resources for FGVTT. This hobby can be expensive even with the software being free, and finding budget options can be time consuming. No matter! For I know all of them. Let's start from the beginning.

I'm planning to expand this guide with more stuff as I avoided niche stuff for time restrictions. If you want to contribute, just add a comment of free ruleset, module, or extension that can help both newbies and vets, solo and group players, and I'll add it by giving credit to you.

Subscribe to comments for new free goodies.

You can find the better version in FGU Forums[www.fantasygrounds.com].
How to Load Modules & Extensions
NOTE: Don't confuse Modules with Extensions.

Rulesets which are .pak files [D&D, Pathfinder] are where the entire data is processed through certain rules, such as the automated rules in D&D 5E. Modules which are .mod files hold data for NPCs, Items, Text, etc., in them. Extensions on the other hand are .ext files and they add functionality to the the rulesets, such as expanded sheets.

In the Launcher, look upper left, where there are 2 small buttons; Folder icon goes to your Data folder. "Data > Modules" is where you should copy the .mod files IF you are copying it from another source.

Similarly, IF you downloaded and extension from out of the Forge, you copy it into "Data > Extensions" folder.

How to Start a Campaign
If you just downloaded rulesets, modules, or extensions, you should Update only once for the launcher to recognize the new items. But I don't recommend updating before an important game session IF the devs updated the software, just in case it breaks modules.

So, all you do is to click Create Campaign,
  • Choose your Ruleset
  • Check the marks in Extensions
  • Give it a name [DnD 5E in my case]
  • and you're good to go.

When you download it from the Forge, it copies the file[s] automatically. All you do from there is to Update.

Video below shows how to load modules inside the VTT.

Things You Can Do for Free
  • You can play solo to learn a setting or practice your GMing skills. Or simply to entertain yourself. Just experiment to your heart's content!
  • You can connect with your friends and run them some free quick encounters or one-shot adventures that I will list.
  • You can find other people in the discord and the forums to just play, since no one needs an Ultimate License for GMing anymore.
  • "Prep is play," as Geek Gamers said once... You can build your world for your homebrew adventures in the VTT as in text form with links, and add free images / maps to them. You can use the maps as a start and build from there, as you can add pins to them.
  • If you are interested in other rulesets, FGVTT has support for most played niches too. But they require the most work in terms of free use.
  • Finally, I will list free modules, and extensions in The Forge so that you can just download and play, or use the extensions as a means to other types of play.
  • - Such as, using a map pin extension to detail your maps with icons like in Skyrim. Keeping a journal for your adventures and adventurers. Using a card dealer extension for all kinds of creation and solo play. Even making corkboard style detective work.
For Total Beginners
If you are new to FGVTT, first thing you should do is to learn the ropes which are easy, but ONLY once you get the hang of them.

Tutorial 5E Campaign (and D&D 5E System Reference Document) comes free with basics guide. It is a free encounter where you pit 2 pre-made characters against 2 goblins and their wolf companion. I suggest opening it within the software but in case you need it:

https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2223382154
From there, just keep learning the basics.
  • Take your time to familiarize yourself with the UI.
  • Only after you are confident with your understanding of combat and the VTT's usage, start small.
  • Take one step at a time to accomplish easy goals, such as, importing a map and run a combat on it by yourself.
  • Or if you like Roleplaying, learn to use the Chat functions and to create story entries with links to NPCs.
Rest of the guide recommends all kinds of stuff both for beginners, veterans, and soloists.
For D&D Beginners
Free Rules and System Reference Document (SRD) contain basic stuff of all important parts of the game. It is a good opportunity to check if you'll like the system, or learn it at your own pace.

If Tutorial 5E Campaign gets stale, I listed some free and short encounters for you to try.

Free DnD 5E Encounters
NOTE that, some of them shows as PDF. To install FGVTT modules, unzip the zip file and move the file with .mod extension into your "fgvtt data > modules" folder. The folder button at the top left of the Launcher opens it. After you copied .mod files into your data > modules folder, Update the client from the Launcher.

Bundle Versions [Mike's Encounters] require you to enter a price which can be zero = free. Earlier bundles are not made as a module.

Free Adventures in the Forge
From https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/

DnD 5E

* Loot Tavern Hunt - Wizards of the Toast:[forge.fantasygrounds.com] Wizards of the Toast is a satirical (but entirely deadly) 5th edition hunt for four characters with an average party level of 3, 7, or 12.

* Tomb of the Forgotten:[forge.fantasygrounds.com] Tomb of the Forgotten from BBEG Adventures is a 4–6 hour one-shot for 1st–3rd level adventurers you can drop into any campaign. Players uncover an ancient mausoleum that hides an undead-infested crypt, deadly ambushes, and a puzzle bound to an ancient noble bloodline.

* Cavern Crawl #001 - Tree of Ballain (5e):[forge.fantasygrounds.com] A 2nd-level 5e adventure for four to six players.

* Ashlock's Maze:[forge.fantasygrounds.com] The great arithmancer Daniel Ashlock, professor at an adventuring school, has disappeared right before the exam period. Fortunately, he left an exam for his first-year students to take, which is administered b y one of his student assistants.

* Thieves' Honor:[forge.fantasygrounds.com] A 16-page adventure that is a collaborative effort by The Eldritch Press, The Reclusive Cartographer, DMNinetoes, The Dungeoneering Guild, Online Tabletop, and Tabletop RPG Music. This urban side-quest adventure is balanced for a party of 3-5 characters that are of 5th-6th level and has an APL of 6. Side-quest Adventures are designed to be dropped into a game quickly and they easily fit into any campaign setting.

DnD 2E

* The Tomb of Kings:[forge.fantasygrounds.com] Free dungeon crawl adventure (47 pages) from Joseph A. Mohr for Level 3-6. 1 tavern, 30+ rooms over 3 levels, over 20 unique NPCs (nearly all with a different and specific magic weapon to recreate from scratch) many monsters (mostly undead ones) and way too much unique loot...

Pathfinder 2.0

* The Lost Village of Arju:[forge.fantasygrounds.com] This one shot is designed for a party of 5 level one adventurers. The story starts in a small town of Riverdale as the players have heard rumors of a lost village deep in the nearby forest.

* Escape from the Cursed Crypt:[forge.fantasygrounds.com] The players are a group of adventurers that have heard rumours of a cursed crypt deep in the woods. Inside, they must battle undead creatures and solve puzzles to find a way out before they are trapped inside forever.

Savage Worlds
* ETU: Scavenger Hunt:[forge.fantasygrounds.com] Chaos begins when the students receive a frantic call from a friend, and fellow student, who styles herself a “white witch.” They need to help her “acquire” a few simple items and then assist her in a ritual so she can prevent a disaster.

This adventure is designed for Freshmen (Novice Rank characters) with a couple of advances. They may or may not already know the supernatural is all too real, but they certainly will after this tale is complete.

* Deadlands Reloaded (converted): One Page (enhanced) Christmas at Ground Zer:[forge.fantasygrounds.com] It’s Christmas Eve in the present Deadlands: Hell on Earth timeline.

The Pryors decide to venture out into the local bazaar for Christmas fun. It’s early evening at the bazaar. Traders haggle, the local church serves up hot chocolate, and there are even carolers!

But then…police cars scream past, sirens blaring. And the radio blares out: “… unexploded ghost rock bomb has been detected on the edge of town …” Horns blare, people yell, and then suddenly all goes silent...

ShadowDark

* Tomb of the Forgotten:[forge.fantasygrounds.com] Deep in a forest graveyard, players uncover a mausoleum that hides an undead-infested crypt, deadly ambushes, and a puzzle bound to an ancient noble bloodline.

RE-DESIGNED FOR SHADOWDARK, this Three Encounter Dungeon one-shot with a classic feel is a perfect initial adventure for first level characters, or it can be dropped into any existing Shadowdark campaign as a side-quest or part of a large campaign arc for characters up to third level.

Other Rulesets
Let's keep in mind what the wiki says:

What is a ruleset?
A ruleset is a set of instructions that Fantasy Grounds follows to run your game. It describes what makes up objects in your games: player character (PC), non-player character (NPC), item, spells, etc. and how they interact with each other.

If you want to create a new object for your game, you can fill in the fields with information from your books and the program will understand this.

> A ruleset does not automatically include any data. Data may or may not be available for a ruleset. Most of our commercial rulesets will also contain one or more data modules that represent the contents of rulebooks for that system. They may also include lists of monsters, items and spells.

How to load modules guide is at top

For Worldbuilders
Creating Your Own World
Okay, I just checked the old free Worldbuilding extension called Player Agency[forge.fantasygrounds.com] and learned that it is discontinued. I said completely "free" but I have to add a replacement that only costs $1.

But if you don't wanna spend it either, you can always use the Campaign Module Creator to take notes in advanced story pages. It is in the right sidebar, upper left of Books window.

Creating Custom NPCs and Items within FGVTT
https://youtu.be/OMRMCigkXQ8
Using FGVTT for Detailing Maps
This is not a map creation software so you can't create a map from scratch, unless you have some brushes and base image to begin with. But you can add anything you can imagine to a map, such as, text, drawings, pointers, icons used as pins with links to a story, an encounter, or to many other info blocks. Thanks to Unity's capabilities you can also add Line of Sight to obscure the maps for your characters.

1. Click the extension link.
2. Just press "GET" after you logged in with your account.
3. Then update the client from the launcher.
4. When creating or entering an existing campaign, tick the box of the extension from the right side of the launcher.

Using Custom Icons as Pins

And by using Points of Interest extension, you can make a map with custom icons as pins. Then you can link them to the story pages, encounters, etc.

Using Standard Cards as a Worldbuilding Tool

Decked Out by Saagael: https://forge.fantasygrounds.com/shop/items/910/view

Forum Thread: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?75772-Decked-Out-Play-With-Cards-in-Fantasy-Grounds

Decked Out is an extension for any CoreRPG based ruleset that adds a comprehensive and intuitive system for handling decks of cards in any game. Create decks of cards using tokens as card images, then load that deck up and deal out cards. All operations can be handled via seamless drag and drop, or through the radial menu. Supports your basic card actions: dealing, playing, discarding, and giving cards. Each deck can be configured to show or hide cards as they're moved around.

Included with the extension is a module that contains your bog standard 52 card deck, plus 2 jokers.

Nicholas Cavernous' Foundations - Free PDF Rules
Now using Decked Out and FGVTT's Campaign Notes, use the following free rulebook to create your world based on cards:

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1keVYJ_ZGLr7q92UL8VekYh1JbG6UhD2f5TQSvC7OSBE/edit?usp=sharing

Basically, you assign meanings to suits and ranks, then use them as Random Content Generators for each part of a fantasy world.

MORE INFO: Foundations is a solo worldbuilding and mapmaking game designed to help create fantasy settings for TTRPGs and stories. It uses real-world concepts from geography, history and anthropology alongside fantasy shorthand to help players create worlds that are fully realised, engaging and unique. It can be used as a worldbuilding exercise or a standalone game.

For Solo Players
Let's just take a look at couple of free solo options.

You can use Jimsocks's Content Generator to create yourself an entire campaign, or numerous parts of one, using 1 click random tables and generators. And use my Oracle as a simple GM Emulator that answers YES / NO Questions about the story you'll create. It's easy once you get the hang of it.

Jimsocks' Content Generator 2020
Read the Instructions of the Content Gen first.

Jimsock's Content Generator: https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?54306-Content-generator-2020

Shameless Self-Advertisement xD
Then only use the Oracle Table within my guide. I wrote the instructions within the table. Cause all the other solo tools are paid.

Playing Free Solo Journaling RPGs
Thanks to damned, we already have Thousand Years Old Vampire converted:

Other Solo Journaling RPGs
You can also use the dice and note taking tools, with Decked Out extension to play other journaling games if you know how to play them, but without a dedicated ruleset. Remember that, more interest means more chance for conversions to happen.

Vex's Dart Game Module

Just a time killer or as a party game.

Don't download extensions unless you know and want what they do in the ruleset. They are different than modules. If you want to use an extension, after you downloaded it, first enable it in the Launcher's right side when you create or load a campaign.

1. Press Search Filters
2. Set Price to "Free Only"
3. Search "map" or "tokens" or anything.
