Introduction
A Brief History of the Temple of Elemental Evil

The Temple of Elemental Evil was originally an AD&D module released in 1985. In 2002, now defunct game developer Troika secured the rights to develop a D&D video game using the 3.5 Edition ruleset from Atari. In 2004, Troika would make another video game based on a different tabletop series, Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, before finally closing down in 2005. Troika was founded by Fallout alumni Tim Cain, Leonard Boyarsky and Jason Anderson, and as such, they have created some of the most beloved RPGs ever made. Early in development Tim Cain was told by Atari and Wizards of the Coast that the team needed to choose an already existing D&D module because they were only given 18 months to complete the game and Atari/WotC didn't believe that was enough time to create their own complete D&D storyline. Tim Cain chose ToEE because it was a self contained module that focused on a dungeon crawl, it would be the only video game set in the Greyhawk campaign setting, and he had played it extensively in his youth, even disassembling his own module to distribute to the dev team for reference. In September of 2003, the game released as arguably the most faithful adaptation of tabletop D&D to a video game, but with a slew of varying levels of bugs and glitches, due to the short development window the team was given. The team created several patches for the game, but Atari had to test the patches before they could be approved for release to the public (part of Troika's contract with Atari) and Atari only tested/approved 3 of the patches Troika created after release. Fans of the game believed that it would forever remain a buggy mess, and missing parts of the module that the team didn't have time to develop, until...

Episode Circle of Eight: A New Hope

A group of dedicated fans of both the game and the module set out on the task of fixing as many of the bugs as they could, while also adding content from the original 1985 module that Troika was unable to include in the release. Similar to their in-lore namesake being a group of 8 powerful wizards, this group of fans resolved many of the issues that plagued players at the time, including making the game even playable as PC technology advanced, and effectively doubling the amount of content gamers could experience in the game. They released two versions of their mod, which they titled "Circle of Eight":

Standard: Various bugfixes but lacking any of the extra content. This is the version of Co8 that is included in the Vanilla Steam release.

New Content: Includes all of the bugfixes that the standard comes packed with, but many hours of additional content the Co8 team adapted from the original AD&D module. The number of changes and additions this adds to the game are too numerous to list them all here but you can find them all with some searching on the Co8 forums linked below.

The Circle of Eight group is still active over on their forums: https://co8.org/community/. Please go visit them and thank them for all their hard work on this passion project.

Temple+: Now with MORE temple!

The community wasn't satisfied with all the hours of extra content and the game running on modern systems provided by the Co8 mod, oh no. They needed more and MORE Temple until they had Temple coming out of their ears! The community summoned Grognards from Hell who provided more Temple, calling their mod Temple+. Among the myriad of engine enhancements and bugfixes Temple+ brings to the table, it also includes a House Rules section in the Temple+ Configuration tool for the mod, which allow you to finetune your gameplay experience. Some of the additional content this mod includes but is not limited to:

  • Support for HD resolutions
  • Compatibility with Win10
  • Faster loading time
  • New Feats
  • New class features for levels 11+
  • New Tactical combat options
  • Gameplay Enhancements, such as flexible PC/NPC party composition
  • AI improvements
  • Pathfinding improvements
  • Many UI / convenience features, such Alt-Click to quickly sell items
  • ... and many, many BUGFIXES!

The version of Temple+ that comes with the Vanilla Steam release is what SNEG refers to as TemplePlusLite. It includes the bugfixes, engine enhancements and basic QoL additions, but none of the additional 3.5e Races/Prestige Classes/Feats or pretty much anything from the House Rules section of the mod that Atari/WotC did not authorize Troika to include in the original release of the game in 2003. Feel free to go check out the Temple+ github here: https://github.com/GrognardsFromHell

SNEG: Of Steam-release & Gaming Obscura

Although the game was released on GoG years ago, the game was never released on Steam. Enter SNEG; a small boutique publisher mostly known for re-releasing older niche games, including but not limited to D&D: Dragonshard, Forgotten Realms: Demon Stone and all of the D&D Gold Box games. Working with the Co8 and Temple+ teams they were able to include all of the bugfixes, engine enhancements and QoL improvements from both of these popular community made mods, and release the (stable) game to a new audience on Steam. This is the version I refer to in this guide as Vanilla Steam and the one we'll be discussing how to add the full Co8 New Content and Temple+ mods to.

With all of that out of the way, please go to the Selecting Your Version section below, and steel yourselves... as EVIL* awaits below!

*The Temple of Elemental Evil. No actual "evil" is contained in this guide.

Selecting Your Version
This Steam re-release comes with many of the bug fixes included in the fan-made mods Circle of Eight and Temple+. It does not include many of the fan-made additions that the full versions of the mods come prepackaged with (ie: new content added in Co8 or the new classes/races selectable in the House Rules tab of Temple+ Configuration). First things first, you will need to choose which version of the game you would like to play as the steps are different for different goals. It should be noted that all three versions require starting with a fresh Steam install, as well as launching the game through Steam once to generate necessary files. Below are what I would consider the most common gameplay versions:

1: Vanilla Steam: Just install the game here on Steam and play. Unlike the original 2003 release, this version of the game works right out of the box, even on modern systems, and contains all of the bug-fixes from Co8 and Temple+, in addition to many SNEG bug-fixes. It does not contain any extra fan-made content/house rules from the mods, due to legal issues. If you want to experience the game as it would have been in 2003 (if it had worked), this version is for you.

2: Co8/Temple+ Modded: This is the version that includes all the fan-made extra content and house rules that can completely change the entire gameplay experience. This version (while allowed) is not supported by SNEG, so if you have any issues with your game (ie: bugs/save corruption/etc) that is the risk you run by modifying your game files and SNEG will likely refer you to install the Vanilla Steam version. Java is required and can be found here.[www.java.com]

2.5: Additional Mods: There are other mods that require the Co8 Front-End is installed and that is how you activate them for play. If you would like to play any of these listed mods, please follow the Co8/Temple+ Modded section of the guide until directed to the Additional Mods section.

  • The main popular one is The Keep on the Borderlands. It is based on another module written by Gary Gygax, and the ToEE mod was created by the Co8 team. It requires the Co8 Front-End and will work with Temple+ installed as well.

  • There is also a beta version out for another mod called Paladin's Cove. This mod requires Co8 (for the Front-End) and also requires you NOT install Temple+.

  • Adding Custom Portraits is a bit more challenging in this game compared to some other cRPGs, even those made around the same time. Adding your own custom portraits requires Co8 to be installed and will work with Temple+ installed as well.

3: Full Temple+ & Integrated Co8: This version includes the full Temple+ (House Rules) but only the integrated bug-fixes from Co8 that comes with the Steam release (no extra fan-made Co8 content). If you would like the basic Co8 and SNEG additional bug-fixes, along with the additional Races/Classes/Rule Adjustments from Temple+ this is your version. Edit: It should be noted I am receiving conflicting reports about this version, which is not my preferred version of playing so I am unable to test. The instructions for this version are taken directly from the publisher SNEG, but reports of it not functioning properly or including the SNEG additions have been posted in the comments below. Please bear this in mind before selecting this as your version. Java is required and can be found here.[www.java.com] Please do not use this version until we get an update from SNEG, this version is not functioning as intended.

4: Troika Cut: This is about as close to the original 2003 release as you can get with the Steam version. It includes the original game files, the Atari patches, Temple+Lite and SNEG's WASD Camera and Item Highlighting fixes. It does not include the integrated Co8 Standard edition or any changes that come with it. If you dislike any adjustments made by Co8 and want to play the game you remember from the game CDs, this is your version.

Once you have chosen a version you would like to play of the game, please go to the corresponding section below.
1: Vanilla Steam
Unlike the original release of the game, this version works right out of the box. Just install the game on Steam, click Play, and enjoy this Troika classic. It comes with no extra fan-made content from Circle of Eight, none of the House Rules from Temple+, but all of the bug-fixes from the Atari patches, Co8, Temple+ and additional fixes by SNEG. This is (arguably) the version of the game the original developers intended on release in 2003.
2: Co8/Temple+ Modded
Now we're getting to the good stuff. Due to legal issues (with non-WotC authorized fan-made content) the vanilla ToEE doesn't include any of the extra content. Below is how to get the mods working on Steam version of ToEE from a fresh install (the directories shown are my examples and will likely differ from your own install locations):

1: Install and launch the game through Steam at least once. This generates additional files that are needed to configure the game to work with mods.

2: Find your game installation folder, if you're having trouble locating it, Right Click the game in Steam (or go to the game's page and click the gear icon), go to Manage and Browse Local Files.

3. Locate ToEE-setup.ini, and open it with Notepad or a similar text editing program.

4: Make the following adjustments inside the ToEE-setup.ini, and save the file.
defaultModule=ToEE
dllName=temple

5: Download the Circle of Eight Modpack 8.1.0 New Content Edition from Moddb here.

6: Run the Circle_of_Eight_Modpack_8.1.0_New_Content_Edition_Setup.exe file you just downloaded. When asked for the install directory, point it to your Steam install directory for the game. (When asked if you still want to install to the directory that already exists click "Yes" and you can choose to install a Desktop Icon)

Important note taken from the insaller:
IMPORTANT: YOU MUST HAVE 'AUTO SAVE ON MAP CHANGES' SET TO 'OFF.'

Go to MAIN MENU > OPTIONS > GAME OPTIONS > PREFERENCES and uncheck the appropriate box to do this, if it is not already unchecked. Note that 'Auto Save on Map Changes' is set to off by default.

7: After the installation finishes, make sure "Launch Circle of Eight Modpack" is checked and click "Finish".

8: Click "Yes" to install the Front-end and click "OK" after it finishes. The next screen is where you Activate the Co8 mod.

9: Click "Yes" on the warning that pops up and wait for it to complete the process.

**IMPORTANT** Now it's time to make some decisions. If you would like to play with the SNEG changes, stop following the guide and just click Play in Steam. If you intend on installing any of the Additional Mods, please proceed to section 2.5 of the guide now. Continue following this section of the guide to install full Temple+ but know that you will lose access to the SNEG changes.

10: With Co8 installed and activated, you can close the ToEE Front-End X app, and we now need to install Temple+. (Even if you don't intend on using any of the House Rules, it is still highly recommended you install Temple+ due to the QoL features added by the mod) Download Temple+, also from Moddb, here.

11: Run the TemplePlusSetup_vx_x_xx.exe you just downloaded and click "Next" after the install has completed.

12: This should open the Temple+ Configuration. First thing we need to do is point the T+ to our Steam installation directory. Then change the "Module" to "ToEE" instead of "ToEESteam".

13: Notice my selected resolution, 1066x600. This is a very good resolution for readable UI and Text in the game. Also you can select your max level and number of party PCs on this screen(Flexible lets you create a full party of 8 custom made characters if you wish, instead of the default 5 PCs and 3 NPCs). The House Rules button near the bottom left is the custom Temple+ content. There are far too many options to go through, but if you hover over the options themselves, they give a pretty good description of the changes they make. Below are screenshots of the settings I personally prefer to play the game with, but feel free to experiment to find a gameplay experience that works for you. Consider the House Rules to be equivalent to D&D homebrew rules.

14: After setting up the Temple+ Config the way you like it, you could click Launch and play the game, or use your Temple+ shortcut that was created in Windows. But if you're like me and prefer to have Steam track your playtime and still have access to the Steam overlay, there's a couple more steps we need to take. First we need to find the install directory for Temple+ (it should be C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\TemplePlus). You can easily get to your AppData\Local folder by inputting %localappdata% in the address bar of Windows Explorer, then find the TemplePlus folder. Copy all the files located in the TemplePlus folder as shown below.

15: Paste them in the Steam install directory for ToEE.

16: Go back to Steam, go to the Properties for the game, and under the Launch Options section, input the following with your own installation directory, making sure to include the quotations like it's formatted in the screenshot below: "G:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Temple of Elemental Evil\TemplePlus.exe" %command%

17: That's it! Now just click Play in Steam and it will launch the game including all the Co8 and Temple+ new content. It should be noted that launching Temple+ in this manner will not automatically update Temple+ like it does natively because we are bypassing the updater. Also, if you would like to install the full Temple+ without the Co8 modpack for whatever reason (ie: Co8 removed the only Drow portrait from the game even though Temple+ allows you to create Drow party members Dx) simply skip steps 5-9.
2.5: Additional Mods
Please go to the name of the additional mod you'd like to install below.

A: The Keep on the Borderlands

Once you have completed step 9 of the Co8/Temple+ Modded section of the guide, if you wish to play The Keep on the Borderlands mod follow these instructions:

1: Download The Keep on the Borderlands mod here: https://www.moddb.com/mods/the-keep-on-the-borderlands

2: Run the Keep_on_the_Borderlands_1.0.1_Setup.exe file you just downloaded.

3: After the installation finishes, make sure "Launch Keep on the Borderlands" is checked and click "Finish".

4: This next screen should look familiar, it's the Co8 Front-End where we can Activate the KotB mod.

5: Click "Yes" on the warning that pops up and wait for it to complete the process.

6: That's it! Please return to the 2: Co8/Temple+ Modded section of the guide, step 10, to continue installing Temple+. When finished, you will be playing The Keep on the Borderlands module.

B: Paladin's Cove Beta

Once you have completed step 9 of the Co8/Temple+ Modded section of the guide, if you wish to play the Paladin's Cove Beta please follow the instructions the mod author has given over on the Circle of Eight forums here: https://co8.org/community/threads/paladins-cove-beta-release-and-feedback.13473/

The author has stated on that thread that Temple+ is causing too many issues with the beta version of their mod for them to continue trying to troubleshoot at this time, and requested that if you play the beta that you do NOT install Temple+. The author's guide seems fairly thorough and similar to the install process of Co8 and KotB (minus the installer) as the mod is activated in the Co8 Front-End. I am not installing this mod currently due to the requested "No Temple+", so I will not be providing a detailed guide on how to install it. But if you're willing to experience an admittedly unfinished mod for the game, then please provide the author with feedback as they requested, as the project could grow into another mainstay ToEE mod in the future with everyone's help and input. If you install this mod DO NOT continue back to the Co8/Temple+ Modded section of the guide, just hit "Play" after activating it in the Co8 Front-End.

C: Custom Portraits (In Progress)

Due to the complicated process of adding your own custom portraits to the game, I would highly recommend reading up on the links below. Especially if you are encountering issues with your custom portraits working:

3: Full Temple+ & Integrated Co8
This version is not functioning as intended, I will update the guide once we receive an update from SNEG. Please do not use this version.

While this game comes with what the devs refer to as "Temple+Lite", some people would prefer to have the full features of Temple+, along with the integrated Co8 and SNEG bug-fixes in the Steam release. (Disclaimer from above in case you missed it: It should be noted I am receiving conflicting reports about this version, which is not my preferred version of playing so I am unable to test. The instructions for this version are taken directly from the publisher SNEG, but reports of it not functioning properly or including the SNEG additions have been posted in the comments below. Please bear this in mind before selecting this as your version.)

1: Install and launch the game through Steam at least once. Then locate your Steam installation folder for the game, and create a backup of your temple.dll file. I prefer to add .bkp to change the file type so I can always find my backups and they're out of the way for such modifications.

2: Create a copy of ToEESteam.dll and paste it in the same folder. Then rename it to "temple.dll" as seen below.

3: Download Temple+ from Moddb here.

4: Run the TemplePlusSetup_vx_x_xx.exe you just downloaded and click "Next" after the install has completed.

5: This should open the Temple+ Configuration. First thing we need to do is point the T+ to our Steam installation directory, then make sure the ToEESteam module is selected.
5b: If your Temple+ Configuration looks different than the one pictured above, check the picture below. When installing using these methods to gather the needed screenshots for the guide, my results are the ones shown in the picture above in step 5. If your results match the picture below, you just need to point the T+ to your Steam installation directory, and no module selection is needed. (Screenshot provided by poiman.)

6: Notice my selected resolution, 1066x600.

7: After setting up the Temple+ Config the way you like it, you could click Launch and play the game, or use your Temple+ shortcut that was created in Windows.

8:Paste them in the Steam install directory for ToEE.

9: Go back to Steam, go to the Properties for the game, and under the Launch Options section, input the following with your own installation directory, making sure to include the quotations like it's formatted in the screenshot below: "G:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\The Temple of Elemental Evil\TemplePlus.exe" %command%

10: That's it! Now just click Play in Steam and it will launch the game including the integrated Co8 and SNEG bug-fixes as well as the Temple+ new content. It should be noted that launching Temple+ in this manner will not automatically update Temple+ like it does natively because we are bypassing the updater.

4: Troika Cut
Maybe you don't like the few Co8 changes that made their way into the game (looking at you "Removed Drow Portrait") and just want to experience the version of the game similar to the original CDs if the game were actually running on modern hardware. It's actually quite easy to get this version up and running.

4: Make the following adjustments inside the ToEE-setup.ini, and save the file.
defaultModule=ToEE
dllName=temple

5: That's it! Just click "Play" in Steam and you're in the game with no Co8 and only the Temple+Lite engine enhancements/QoL changes.
FAQ & Troubleshooting
Q: I don't see the ToEE-setup.ini anywhere?

A: You need to launch the game once through Steam to generate the file in your install folder.

Q: I followed your Co8/Temple+ Modded guide and every time I change scenes I get stuck on the loading screen?

A: Go to MAIN MENU > OPTIONS > GAME OPTIONS > PREFERENCES and uncheck "AUTO SAVE ON MAP CHANGES" as stated in the guide.

Q: I'm installing the Full Temple+ & Integrated Co8 version and my Temple+ Config is missing the Module drop-down?

A: Please see step 5b of the Full Temple+ & Integrated Co8 section of the guide.

Q: SNEG's WASD Camera Scrolling feature isn't working and I followed your Full Temple+ & Integrated Co8 guide?

A: Please see the disclaimer under the Selecting Your Version and the beginning of the Full Temple+ & Integrated Co8 sections. The instructions I put in that section of the guide are taken directly from SNEG's pinned post in the forums here. I recommend you post in that thread and send an email to support@sneg.io to help bring attention to the issue as SNEG are the ones who provided those instructions. Speaking of...

Q: I followed ALL the instructions in SNEG's pinned posts about mods and now I'm having problems?

A: If you read those instructions carefully they are two separate sets of instructions for two separate results, and those instructions are separated in my guide appropriately. Do not mix and match steps from different versions in the guide or you will get unstable results.

Q: Is it okay for me to update Temple+?

A: Yes it is fine for you to update Temple+, I just stated in the guide not to count on it updating automatically anymore because we are bypassing the updater itself.

Q: Will I need to repeat any of these steps if SNEG updates the game in the future?

A: I am unsure how many (if any) of the steps in the guide will need to be repeated on a game update in the future. Normally when updates are pushed through on Steam, any of the default installation files that are different will be overwritten. This could include the renamed temple.dll (the ToEESteam.dll copy) if you chose the Full Temple+ & Integrated Co8 version, but until we get more updates for the game, I really don't know.

Q: I installed Temple+ and now when I launch the game I get a Temple+ error message and the game doesn't launch?

A: Launch the Temple+ Configuration that you copied to your game's install folder and verify the game's install directory is still set correctly.

Q: SNEG says they added over 1000 bugfixes but haven't released a full changelog of those fixes, what did they add!?

A: I am not a SNEG employee and that question is not within the scope of this guide. Go ask SNEG.

Q: I'm confused about what these mods have to offer, can you give me a full list of reasons as to why I should install any of these mods instead of just playing the regular Steam release?

A: If you are interested in learning more about what these mods have to offer then I suggest doing your own research to decide if they will enhance your gameplay experience. This guide is a "How To" not a "Why You Should".

Q: I followed your guide and it erased all my saves/crashes constantly/my wife left me! WHY!?

A: I am not responsible for any modifications you made to your game or resulting damages to your saves/marriage. That is the risk you are taking when modifying your game files.

Q: Can I install the Co8 New Content edition and full Temple+ overtop of the SNEG/Steam version?

A: Unfortunately no, you cannot at this point in time install the full Co8 NC and Temple+ and get the SNEG additional features. Perhaps SNEG or the Co8 team will figure out a workaround so we can get the best versions of all the mods if we're willing to put in the legwork, but currently it seems unlikely.

Q: What version in your guide do YOU recommend I play?

A: Whichever version makes you happy. <3

Q: Years ago a Drow rogue named "Thalikor" got my mom pregnant and then went out to get some milk but never came back?

Final Thoughts and Disclaimer
I've been seeing quite a few discussions about the modding difficulty in this game, and considering this is one of my favorite D&D CRPGs, I wanted to share to hopefully remove some of the stress for people trying to enjoy the game 22 years later. Obviously it goes without saying, if you run into any difficulties during any part of the process, I recommend uninstalling the game, doing a fresh install and reading carefully along with your selected version of the guide again. Do not mix and match steps from the different versions as you're probably going to get unstable results.

If anyone from SNEG is reading this, I play with the full Temple+ and ToEE module, because the integrated Co8 also removes the Drow portrait from the game. If you could add it back, I would love to play the Temple+ with the integrated Co8 and additional Steam release fixes.

This took a lot longer than I thought it would to put together, if anything is unclear or incorrect, please let me know. I will update the guide if needed.

To manage my tga images, I found a great little app called IrfanView : it can open almost any type of images, offers many image treatment options like an easy greyscale conversion, convert to other formats, browse TGA images live, etc.

nb: I am presuming you read the guides I linked.
Thalikor  [author] Feb 2 @ 9:31am
@Roland There are specific versions of .tga the game accepts and you need to make sure you've checked that as well. Off the top of my head I believe it was 32 color or something, as well as it having an alpha channel behind it. Also the picture naming conventions need to be followed and manually added into your portraits.mes file. I'll be using Gimp in the examples for my custom portrait guide as it's free, but often find myself copying onto preexisting portraits and changing the name of the files to add new portraits. That is the easiest way to make new portraits and ensure they work.
Roland Feb 2 @ 7:00am
@thalikor Thanks. I have narrowed down my issue. It seems that gimp and paint.net export the tga into something the game doesn't like. I can take a currently working portrait do nothing to it but overwrite it and it shows up black.
Thalikor  [author] Jan 31 @ 3:53pm
@Mandos Glad you got it sorted, I had no idea about any macros in the game, so I figured I'd let Baraz handle it. :P
Mandos Jan 31 @ 6:17am
@Baraz thanks yeah I meant keybindings and I was CTRL+Clicking instead of CTRL+Key. Got it!
Baraz Jan 29 @ 7:31pm
@Mandos In all versions, holding down CTRL and pressing any of the unused keys should keybind (macros would be something different technically).

Example: while mousing-over the Search action, pressing Ctrl + z would make pressing z do the Search action anytime later.

You cannot use keys already used by the game, that is C (combat mode), F (formation), H (help), I (inventory), L (logbook/journal), M (map), O (options), R (rest), Shift, Spacebar, Tab.
Mandos Jan 29 @ 6:49pm
1. Thanks so much for this guide. Really appreciate all the hard work. 2. Does anyone know if macros still work? I used to be able to do CTRL on the option wheel but that no longer seems to work.
Thalikor  [author] Jan 27 @ 12:17pm
@Roland Yeah they are quite specific when compared to other similar cRPGs in getting them to work. I still intend on adding the Custom Portraits section to the guide, just been working a lot of overtime and we're currently in a winter storm where I live. Hopefully this coming weekend (although I have to work Saturday too) I can get around to it. In the meantime, please check out Baraz's guide, or check out this link to a Nexus mod I know works with just about all the extra Co8 custom portraits: https://www.nexusmods.com/thetempleofelementalevil/mods/2
Baraz Jan 27 @ 10:47am
@roland It is not obvious nor easy, but "doable". My party of 5 is all custom portraits.

I wrote a guide and a post elsewhere that might help you get it.

Custom portraits is the only thing holding me back. Can't seem to get them to work.
